I've pretty much come to the conclusion that the ability to give care is simply if you decide to do it, you can. It has little to do with emotional strength, moral fiber, or any other factor. It is an act of volition.

I think you got that one with pin-point accuracy, dorph. It's an act of volition. If you go visit any particular nursing class anywhere, and look at the psychological makeup of the students it is going to run across the board, from total wimps to amazons. You learn very quickly to master the deed and you just do what has to be done and then think about it after the fact.

Pam, if you can give a cat a shot, humans are easy. I still wince giving my mother's dog shots every day and I have given humans........literally........thousands of them.

I'm proud of you Jan. That is a rite of passage. Hope you and your daughter are feeling better and that Neil doesn't get it.

brand new definition for multi task. LOL Sorry you were both so darn sick but you came out of it knowing how to give an injection and probaby 5 pounds lighter. ( Maybe a shopping trip is in order.)

Good for you Jan. I've never given a shot either, not either a pet or a human. But I guess when you've got to you can do just about anything.

Hope you're feeling better. This year's version of the crud is pretty nasty.

I had to have a shot every day for 10 days after every dose of the chemo...The first time I went over to the nurse neighbor...the second time I was with my daughter...handed her the needle and said.."do it"...she thought for a while, chugged a glass of wine and shot me up. When I didn't scream and she didn't faint, it was easy.
Then I decided it was easier to do it myself than to worry about finding someone else...
And I know a lot of diabetics who give themselves or their children shots several times a day....

Yea Jan! I just know I could do it, but I am so glad I haven't had to. Children just bring out the best don't they? You get better now, you hear me? Or send Jaz to make your drink pink stuff, your choice which it is she brings.

Jan, the only pink drink I would dare serve you right now would be a couple shots of Pepto Bismol, shaken over ice and served in a martini glass with a couple plain oyster crackers floating on the top.

A mother's love know's no limits. I'm proud of you. I'm petrified beyond reason by needles. When Groover was dying, I considered it a major achievement that I was able to hold her while Steve gave her sub-cu fluids... my back up plan when he traveled was to call my neighbor who had a diabetic cat and have her help me... but I never dreamed of doing it myself. I'm impressed that you willed yourself to do this.

Ditto what Pam said. I just need a tent of skin at the base of your neck where the needle goes in...and I'm good. lol

I agree with all of you who say it's a matter of just. doing. it. Because I honestly cannot deal with the concept of needles being poked into that soft, sweet skin. I have to send my brain away for the few minutes it takes to get the insulin in the syringe, find that #$!! tent of skin and plunge. It's a kneejerk reflex that compels me to say "thank you for letting me do that to you" as I rub the spot to help get the insulin circulating. And then, as I stand up and walk away from the kitty, I give a massive involuntary shudder for the necessary atrocity that I have just committed.

I often wonder how it is that pets sometimes don't seem to feel the pain. Never with our dogs,or cats have they ever even blinked when given an injection. It's as if it never happened. I know animals,especially dogs,can easily hide pain but you'd think they would at least move something when that needle goes in.

If my cat Puddy were still alive, Marda, he would probably
be saying a few choice words about shots. He knew words that
would embarrass a sailor. My job was to either throw a
towel around him and hold him or give the shot, i'm
thinking now that a shot would have been the better choice.

Linda, I can't begin to imagine what you had to go through
with chemo and having a shot every day. Until the weekend
when I was forced to heed my daughter's pleas for help, I
was the one that turned my head away when my aunt gave
herself insulin shots in the stomach. Now it doesn't seem
so bad to me. I could have probably given myself a shot but
just the thought of sticking a needle in someone else was
just too much.

Michelle, you of all people are the one I would have considered
fearless. For everyone else, you to, Michelle, if I could
do it anyone could.

Suzy, I am feeling better and hoping against hope that Neil
doesn't get it. Poor dear had his birthday ruined because I
was taking care of Katrina and then I got sick. He took
care of me, offering to give me shots but I declined, I
sort of toughed it out. I really wanted to save the
injections for him if he got sick. He doesn't need to be
violently ill with the hemmorrhaging going on with his eyes.

Andie, you are right about the crud this year being bad.
I've never seen anything like it and some people are having
to be hospitalized. Katrina should have gone to the
hospital, she needed IV fluids. One more day and there
would have been an ambulance crew knocking on her door.

Oh you have all my sympathies - 6 of us in my family have had it so far. I only got it very mildly but DSS, DSD, SIL and the baby all got it. (Imagine, three of them yacking in the same house - then her mother, who came to help, got it too).

Don't forget you can take ibuprofen or tylenol or similar for the muscle aches in your chest (from all that heaving). (If you can keep it down)

Sara, I am so sorry, I cannot even begin to imagine that
many people in one house having the crud at the same time.
All I can say is you must have more bathrooms than I and
more trash cans to.

I have a bottle of tylenol on my bedside table and believe
me I took it. One thing I wasn't prepared for was the pain
across my back and stomach. I felt like someone had beaten
me with a ball bat.

Now for the obvious question. Do any of you need shots? ;0)

Janis, I;m sorry to hear you and your daughter have been so ill. There are schools around my town closing because of the flu.

Many years ago I was taught to give a shot so I could give my ex-husband allergy shots. That first time was really hard but then I got the feel of it and did it for a couple of years.
