Cabin Fever?

Then let's return to a time and place that is warm and tranquil......Sunshine and soft, salty breezes. No one, and I mean absolutely no one, is in a hurry. There's plenty of cerveza, planter's punch,sunshine, papaya juice, shade, and fresh towels to go around and a do-nothing itinerary, if one so pleases. There's a coral reef just one hundred feet off the beach. It's shallow and an easy swim. But the tour bus to the Mayan pyramids leaves in about an hour, or so, Mexican time. Your choice, of course. Oh, and don't worry there are plenty of hula girls and cabana boys to go around. Skinny dipping is bather's choice, too.

Quiet Village...one of the best ever. A year ago today we were in the Caymans and decided that this year we would stay home. What in the heck were we thinking????? Count me in. Thanks for the Martin Denny break. I'm goling to be listening to it on and off all day.

I have really enjoyed all of the pictures. Beautiful garden shot Silverkelt. digginde, your heucheras, hydrangeas, and butterflies are so pretty. I love the way you have so many nice plants together. Nancy VB, the butterfly house on the stump is a great idea, love the poppies too!! That is a butterfly house, isn't it? really enjoyed your album aquawise, iris are a favorite. the masses of daylilies that Juliany showed are so lovely, I found myself looking them over many times. When will winter end? WE got it again last night. I'm stuck inside, not even work today. More and more snow, ice and wind. But then it is gonna be up to 50 on Monday!! These pictures have certainly helped. Keep them coming. Here Jean, this is for you! Here is one of my favs of Bowie. Sarah, the lake is a small lake, and it is the reserve water supply for a nearby town, so it is relatively quiet and clean. There are no houses on the other side, and motor boats are only allowed on Sundays and holidays during the summer months. So it is very peaceful and quiet. A lot of people enjoy fishing on the lake. This is Incendiary, one of my first to bloom, as you can see, and the lake is in the background. More pics. I had to take that last picture through a window, as the Herons will fly away. You can see the second ones reflection in the water at the top of the picture. The Herons come every morning in the warm months to 'fish'

Yesterday was our 14th day in a row of 100-degrees F or higher, and it topped out at 110-degrees F yesterday. Thankfully we'll have highs in the low 90's this week, and a much needed break from the extreme heat.... But the humidity will be higher and I always think that is worse at any temperature than dry heat. I get up at 3:30 a.m. each morning so I can get everything I need done before 9:00 a.m. when the heat really sets in. The gardening is done by 7:00 or 8:00. I love being at home, so cabin fever or getting bored doesn't fit my personality. I've been spending the hot afternoons making Wonder Ovens (aka Wonder Box - a form of thermal cooking) for Christmas (see link below). Your recipe for homemade mayonnaise made me think of my mother. I don't think my parents bought a jar of mayonnaise until I was a teen in the late 60's - it was always homemade. If you ever are concerned with using raw eggs, you can pasteurize it/them first by bringing the egg/s to 140-degrees F in a pan of hot water, and maintain the temperature for 3-1/2 minutes. Place in cold water to stop the cooking process. It's enough heat to pasteurize the egg, but not enough to completely cook it so you can still use it "raw". Lots of raw whole foods these days (but that's normal all year round) - especially with the garden producing. Cooling fruit or homemade fruit sorbet for dessert. Lots of homemade sprouts to use in wraps and on sandwiches now that it's gotten too hot to grow fresh greens. I also have a lot of pre-cooked meat, soup and chili in the freezer in user-friendly amounts we use when it's hot (cook once, eat twice - or more). Frozen seasoned steak strips or chicken for hearty dinner salads or a head start on a stir-fry, or quick Mexican entrees. Pulled pork has all kinds of uses.... I portion it in snack-bags and then vacuum-seal it in a FoodSaver bag. Add some bbq sauce and a homemade burger bun from the freezer and top it with shredded cabbage (also from the garden). I baked some new (homegrown) potatoes in the Solar Oven the other day, reheated some chili (formerly frozen) in the Solar Oven as well, to top the baked potatoes for a quick meal along with sliced fresh vegetables from the garden. My seedlings -- mostly tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and some brassicas and lettuces -- are languishing indoors now, even under lights. As you know, we've had a very few, very nice "teaser" days here and there in between the cold rainy ones and the flurries. I keep telling myself it can't be much longer until we have consistent warmth and sun, but then it is. I cope by drawing up ever more elaborate garden plans and adding to my list of projects to undertake -- when the weather is nice! Otherwise reading, cooking, watching my "backyard pets" (wild birds and critters and the neighbor's cats) from inside, some paper crafts. I have an interest in geology and study it a little informally, but I was unaware that there was significant volcanic activity this year. I would think that an eruption would have to be on the scale of Krakatoa's to have any climatic effect, and even then it would probably amount to little more than pitching lots of particulate matter into the atmosphere, which in turn would probably do little more than produce unusually picturesque sunsets for a year or so. Not certain, but that's what I think. In terms of climate change phenomena, aka "global warming" (we're not hearing that term much anymore, I've noticed, because of conservatives' claims that it's "ideological," but global warming is what it is), my understanding is that climatologists have predicted conditions in the northeast and mid-Atlantic states will become increasingly similar to the Pacific Northwest, and that in fact is what we've seen to be happening the past several years with cooler and wetter springs and the delayed arrival of the more typical heat and humidity of summer. It seems they're less confident about predicting trends for winter, though.

OMG Camp, I can see this graphically in detail. Bummer. Bamboo broke my opal, not my teeth. Wintertime is not a time for me to staY inside. We have a different kind of winter. No bugs and no snakes and no 100º+ so heavy garden chores are much more pleasant. It is time to do my woods restoration.. That means chainsawing thinning out of control Mountain ash Juniper. Creation of slash berms on slopes, wildlife piles, protect young red oak, madrone and escarpment cherry trees. clean out catalog nests in bird boxes. take photos and create a long report for the county to keep my tax exempt. I have been working on it for 4 days. Tomorrow I need to complete the report and get it to my overlords. I live in fear till it is done. I did get some seeds planted the other day.

LOL! Martin Denny takes me back to going to Kon Tiki Ports or Trader Vic's after big dances in high school.

Very observant of you, Michael, to figure out that folks were getting cabin fever about this time of the winter.

The voyage of the Kon Tiki fired my imagination as a boy. Maybe that was what ruint me for the sea. Maybe not, methinks it has more to do with living in Long Beach as a kid.

These days, I like a bit more comfort iffin I'm ocean cruising...

LOL, Andie. I must be the only one really enjoying the cold weather...of course mine's not so extreme and hasn't been around for long, but I'm not anxious to wish it away just yet. josh

Josh, i enjoy winter around here too - that's because our "winter" usually means highs in the 50's to low 60's. That's a nice, spring day for most folks living in the northern states.

grrrrrrr...............cabin fever? I can be pretty flexible with weather patterns, but like company or fish, they start to stink after three days. This last system seems as if it has gone on forever, with no real end in sight.

It's eight stinking degrees out there right now, and I'm actually thrilled because at least the sun is shining. It's a good thing schools teach negative numbers, because it was minus five when I got up. My car doors were frozen shut this morning. Not the lock, the whole door. No, no ice but just that cold. The transmission didn't want to shift, either. My husband is actually telling me how to dress now to go outside, like I am a toddler. He has entrirely too much time on his hands, LOL, or cabin fever.

Still 2 above in the Dakotas and down to 10 below AGAIN--Remind me next summer when it hot hot hot how nice this cool weather is. Don't think spring will ever come.
