And about time too!!!

Do you realize that spring begins in a month, 30 short days. That needs to happen this year, winter is getting rather shabby and is beginning to look like a derelict and I am rather sick of cold high winds and zero mornings. There are parsnps in the garden and where the snow had melted away I tried to dig some. The spading fork sounded like I hit the sidewalk with it. The ground is frozen that hard, maybe in a month or so they will be available. I'm tired of trees with no leaves on them and would be happy to see the cranes come back. Maybe I'm just getting old but this winter has seemed like one endless period of putting on extra heavy coats and fighting the howling winds. I'm tired of carrying wood in and ashes out, I'm tired of eating lettuce that tastes like it has been laying around in some refrigerated storage for a month. And in about 40 days we will open the museum, it better warm up because we have no heat in there. Enough complaining, I'm really happy with where I live but the winters are seemingly getting longer.

I understand what you're saying. Up until this morning, we had lost most of our snow cover and I've been scanning the grasslands for cranes (to no avail, but it's a reflex when I see open grasslands). As I type, the plows are going by, leaving those plow berms in our uncleared driveway, and Steve has been pestering me to look at the radar to decide when the optimal time for snow removal will be. It's a @*%#(+^$ Winter Wonderland! ;o)

I am occupying myself with planning the details of our annual Vernal Equinox party. We usually get about 50 people, and they usually stay until the very wee hours. Planning menus, invites, and an evening around a spring theme really does a lot to distract me and lift my spirits during winter's last cruel throes.

As I am reading this (and yes I'm excited about spring) we are in the midst of a full blown blizzard, not unusual for February in Michigan. The wind is unusually out of the SE which SHOULD mean warm wind..NOT. It is blowing huge flakes. I usually go into town (5 mi) to my mom's to visit with her (nearly 89 and my sisters one who spent 4 mo in a cancer hosp this past fall) but she called me a bit ago and said one sister said "stay home it is a white out" when she went to her job today ! So alas I'm staying home.
Pretty, it is absolutely gorgeous watching the hgue flakes wind drive horizontally swirling around the huge ash tree and all the evergreens in our front yard, the white agains the dark and grey, beautiful absolutely beautiful.

Sure it will be over with soon, but frozen ground here until May is not uncommon, no shove for the parsnips in this neck of the woods. I just went out and put wood on our fire in the boiler and am thinking, we are nearly out of wood (3 cord a week is not unusual for us to burn to heat both houses) and we have a delivery of 10 cord coming starting on Tuesday (hoping they can get to it to bring it to us by then).

I to have been counting the days until Spring, but knowing that Spring here means more winter, generally for another month, unless we are fortunate to have an early spring, doesn't look like it here today.

First, forget the pebbles or any other "stuff" in the pot bottoms. It doesn't help. Second, if you can safely remove the soil balls without them breaking up and messing up the root balls, you can safely repot the plants. If the root balls aren't sufficiently knit together so they don't break up, don't mess with them. It would be better to wait until the soil balls are sufficiently knit together so they come out whole, in one piece. If that's later this summer, do it later this summer. If it doesn't happen by late winter, early spring, when you would be planting bare roots anyway, wait until that time and repot them. If they break up and put the roses at risk because of the disturbance, at least it is the appropriate time of year for them to experience that disturbance. Good luck! Kim

flyleft, I never wear heals. I usually wear some type of comfort shoe. I also had orthotics made and just started wearing them. sjerin, My pain is close to the kidneys. Sorry to hijack your post Bill. I appreciate all of you trying to help me. I have had back pain for many years and have tried just about everything except medication. I also have very bad TMJ and just this past year I went for weekly treatments. (that's another long story). The TMJ got worse from the treatments and now I have both back pain and jaw pain. Bill, I know you said the hypnosis didn't work for your smoking but I read that back pain is easier to help with hypnosis. When I am relaxed the pain is a lot less pronounced. Don't worry about me, so many other people on this forum have a lot worse health issues than me. thanks for the concern, Donna

That happened to me last year, and I talked to MSU, they told me wait til about 18 inches tall, then you can pull them. That worked for me, but mine come up later, so that might be a factor too. Mine seemed to be hardened enough to rip out a good chunk of roots with it. It worked, very few came up after that. You want them about 6 inches apart, or 4 per square foot. Yes best to pull later, but like you so many they were an issue for sure. They had to go sooner. Sound like they are tall enough to pull now!

I'm a zone south, but i've had just about e-damn-nuff winter, fer cryin' ice!

Between the propane, gettin' the snowblower fixed and plowing bills, this has been a RIDICULOUS winter...

I'm betting March will be crazy warm, and draw out all the blossoms so they can get zapped by hard frost in April...

I hate cold weather.
I hate snow if it doesn't melt in an hour after it
hits the ground.

I live where we usually only see a snow flake or two during
a whole winter season and it suits me just fine.

It's 54 out now and the weather man says rain and snow
flurries with a low of 33. I'm looking forward to summer.

Bre, while I'm impressed with your heating system, it isn't
for me. I bought gas logs this year for one of
the fireplaces and I love it that I can just push a button
and the flames start flickering and in a matter of a few
minutes, the chill is gone and the room is toasty warm.

Gandle, we used to have a wood burning stove. Had it
installed back when everyone had an Ashley with a pipe shoved into the fireplace.
It went out the door the next
day after I lost all facial hair including my eyebrows

and eyelashes due to an explosion.

We've had the coldest winter this year than any I can
remember and I will be so glad when it's over.

I'll be heading for cover as soon as I post this since the southerly winds brought us temperatures in the seventies yesterday. This is yo-yo weather for us. Really warm days followed by a front that pushes us back to chilly.

But the daffodils know that it's spring, or close to it. They're blooming all over the place & yesterday when I went to Office Max the loropetulums (sp?) in the parking lot were all blooming with their fringy pink flowers.

It's time to start checking the hummingbird migration site. Tehy'll be here pretty soon.

No need to run for cover for posting such things! Spring is not a zero sum game and it'd be silly for a Northerner to resent a Southerner for their position on the globe and the reality that it can't happen here until it happens there first. I'm happy in my heart to hear about your vernal progress! Please report more with reckless abandon!

It's going to be yucky tomorrow, but today was warm (high 40s). I ran errands comfortably without a coat and put on my wellies to walk the dogs. The dogs got ridiculously muddy chasing the frisbee and I splashed in every puddle I encountered... though I did feel a little silly when a neighbor drove by and I was jumping up and down in a puddle like a six year old. Oh well... winter is long and I'll take my joy where I find it!

I've been thinking about the hummingbird migration too, but there haven't been any reported sightings yet. Let me know when that changes! I was listening to an ornithologist on public radio today and he said that there are Bald Eagles in LaCrosse, WI that are on nests already... it's only a matter of time...

Yes, we are in the yo yo stage. Teens last night, thirties today, tomorrow we are supposed to get to the high 50's. I'll be outside checking that out. Saturday will be in the sixties but with rain. Then Sunday night it will turn cold again and might be snow. Tis the season.

We have daffodils and forsythia blooming and
Bradford pears are starting to bloom in some parts of the city.
It is in the 60s now but snow flurries by the weekend.
YoYo weather indeed.

The hummingbirds will be in my area by the end of March.

And about time too!!!
