Programs that help directly

Over on the cooking forum, chaplainkent suggested we all go through our cabinets and clean out stuff since he said that most of thrift stores supplies are dwindling. Good point, I thought. As it is free to me, and goes to my friends who live right here. Then I got my electric bill and looked for the "round up" option Nashville used to have, thinking that'd be a way I could afford to help too. It wasn't on there (the announcement for this year coincided with a rate increase and so it got negative feedback, well duh, why are you raising the rates? but I digress), so I wrote them, and they pointed me to Project Help, where you can donate to help pay electric bills for the elderly who live in Nashville. What else can I do? I want to help people who live directly in my community. What do you do?
