I think we discussed Gordon Lightfoot on another thread. I just heard "Edmund Fitzgerald" on one of those satellite radio stations recently and was blown away at how wonderful the song was and how well it's held up over the years. Is Lightfoot still alive? We also discussed John Prine, didn't we? I visit a couple of different forums so it's not always easy for this old gal to remember where I've discussed what! John was a high school classmate and a profilic and very successful song writer. Although he never made superstar status he has a cult following and has made a living with his songwriting talents. In addition to the two mentioned above I'd like to add good old Chicagoan Steve Goodman. I love the song "City of New Orleans" which epitomized a young and active imagination. He wrote the song on a train ride from Chicago to visit his grandmother in Mattoon, IL. In his imagination and his song he continued the journey down to New Orleans. Goodman started writing songs in high school and when he graduated became a part of the Old Town folk scene in Chicago. I remember this time well, it was quite exciting. He played at the Earl of Old Town and broke into the music business at a level that allowed him to do music full time when one evening Arlo Guthrie was "in the house". He begged Arlo to listen to him play and begrudgingly Arlo agree, as long as Goodman would buy him a beer, and he'd only listen as long as it took him to drink the beer. Well, Goodman sang City of New Orleans, Arlo was so impressed he asked for the rights to record it, and the rest is history. Music critics applaud his talent for finding meaning in the mundane. He often wrote with John Prine. As I said the Chicago Old Town music scene was a phenom. Goodman worked as fast as he could, because he was diagnosed with leukemia in '68 and battled the disease for another 16 years until his death in '84. Yes, and she wasn't the only one. There was a lady that had the baby in the ambulance the day after. The whole event was broadcasted on our local channel. Although, we joked around about naming her Harvina, no, they didn't named her Harvey. Her name is Ellie :) Now, I feel soooo old! LOL...
