Name That Plant!

Tiny White Flowers

These small plants were in a sunny section of ditch this morning, that had lots of shale. They had 7 to 10 stems from the base that were unbranched above. Stems were to 7 inches long, spreading, and very hairy. Leaves were opposite, sessile to clasping, and very hairy. Flowers were white. They appeared to have 5 notched petals each. However, upon closer examination, there were 10 petals in 5 pairs, with each pair crossed as shown below. Flowers were bunched at stem ends, and were about 1/8 inch across. They were deep enough that interior details were difficult to photograph. However, it appeared that the stamens were bright yellow, and interior petal bases were green.

Thanks jaynine. I finally realized that the photos were taken too early in the day, and went back for more info. It appears that the petals were just unfolding this morning, and that gave them an overlapping appearance. I must have torn one, making it seem that there were 10, instead of 5. The photo below, plus non-scarious bracts, glandular hairs on sepals, 10 stamens with 5 styles, etc. suggest this plant is Cerastium brachypodum (Short-stalked Chickweed - see afternoon photo). Sorry for the midleading information earlier.

Thanks, floral_uk. That seems like a strong possibility, though none of the flowers I'm looking at seem to open as much as Cardamine's flowers. Maybe I need to give them a few days. The plants are about 9" tall which is about the same for Cardamine. I see this Cardamine is sometimes called "Sand bittercress" which would accord with these plants growing in virtual gravel. Here are several photos I just took (some of which are virtual duplicates but they look beautiful!) I'll get a good photo of the basal leaves later today.

It isn't a Physalis. It's a Euphorbia, as said above. There are pictures of similar plants online, but those are labeled E. graminea. This plant may not be covered by any of the US keys. I was hoping that someone could provide the species ID. This search for Euphorbia graminea photos shows some plants that are very much like the plant in the photos. Other pictures show plants with much more narrow leaves, which would be expected for something named "graminea".

Embothrium - the plants are growing in SW lower Michigan but the "surprise" seeds are all non-native, naturalized species, both for Michigan and the US. floral_uk z.8/9 SW UK - I had to look up that one - "etiolated" - so yes, it is growing in partial shade and it does appear to be Lobularia maritima, thanks for the tip.
