Happy Valentine's Day

I'm in love with vintage Valentine's cards/postcards, so this week I hope you will enjoy viewing some with me.

The two Valentine's above both sport the same poem. I've found it on quite a few Valentines but have never found the author.

wild_forager Unless you can find information on soil temps, it's hard to give any worthwhile advice about planting similar crops. A lot of people test their own, either with a soil thermometer or one of those meat probe cooking thermometers -- you just poke them into the soil, wait about 30 seconds and see what shows up! As for containers, their temperature is pretty dependent on ambient temps unless they're huge. You can measure the soil temps in them the same way. I don't usually plnat things in containers quite as soon as in the earth, though if you can move your containers to an inside spot if the temps are going to fall below freezing, you might be able to plant things relatively early since they warm up rapidly during the day. I have nine self-watering containers ready to go, sitting out on the deck waiting for warmer weather where I'll plant carrots in a couple of them. Also green onions after they sprout in their inside flat.

What I am planting before Valentine's Day

I plan to plant as soon as the snow melts off the beds in my main garden. Going through my seed box, I found corn salad, baby bok choi, and lots of lettuce and carrots. I'll buy some new spinach seed, too. Those will be seeded right away, covered with a row cover, and will begin sprouting as they will over the next couple of months, with some more snow and maybe even rain before spring is official. I'll also start leeks, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, and cardoon in the house by Valentine's day. Oh, and I'll start dropping spinach and corn salad seeds in the empty spots in my winter garden (low) tunnel as soon as I get the spinach seed. Annie I received your e-mail. Glad you received the prizes and valentine gift. Love all the fairy packages. Rita I received your box today and loved it all. The post office is so rough on packages the cute little fairy arrived broken along with the heart box. Rita you sent so much, two boxes of candy (Yum), valentine card, two precious bear valentine figurines, angel figurine, valentine pencil-pencil sharpener-eraser and note pad. Thank you so much. Sheri-Sorry to read your Birthday gift was missing from the card...I found some black sharpie retractable markers and included one for plant labeling. If I find them again I will send you another. Melinda did receive hers so that one was still intact. Here is the message I received from Melinda via facebook. Dear Shirley, Thank you so much for the beautiful card and new marker pen! So needed that! I am trying to get on the new GW and have tried for days! Don't know if it is my computer or what, but can't sign it, can't connect with FB or anything. I may have to make a new Yahoo account and everything to make a new sign in, not sure. But it is extremely frustrating! Could you please say Thank you to all the ladies

Remember making valentine boxes out of shoe boxes? And kleenix flowers to paste on? The boxes of cards to hand out to your fellow classmates? They still have those, but they are all themed to some movie, show or game. Ours were generic. There would be one for the teacher, most silly and always one very pretty or "mushy" one. I remember in second grade the cutest boy in the class gave me his prettiest card. It had pansies on it (even then I was focused on flowers), don't remember what it said.
