When you harvest, carefully bisect the fruit and take a shot. Along with a whole peach and a ruler in the image. That and it looks to be fairly young tree, and Rhode Island certainly can narrow it down to what it isn't and what it could possibly be. Dates when it breaks dormancy, blooms and ripens also can help. Looks like someone knew what they were doing in initially forming the tree. Getting lists of what is available online from your local nurseries can help to...but you are unlikely to ever be certain unless there is just some unusual feature present that gives it away.

I think you are right! I found some info on the web. Common name is winter jasmine, and it's supposed to produce yellow blooms on "last season's growth." Well, I thought it was something else, and I've been keeping it pruned! So there's been no "last season's growth" and I consequently haven't seen any flowers! Sigh. Well! I will just have to lay off the pruners this year and see what happens!
