Old recipes

Yes, another food thread. We always go here, so lets just make it about that from the beginning.

Anyway............

I went to visit the folks this past weekend and for some reason asked my Mom about some recipes she made when I was a kid. Well, she dug out all her old recipe cards and in the process found a handwritten recipe book she believes her mother gave her when she was still a kid. It's probably somewhere in the neighborhood of 75 years old. To me it's an absolute treasure and I'm having tons of fun going through it trying to decide what to make first.

My Mom's background is basically farm family as is most of the relatives, so I think a lot of these recipes reflect growing up poor and making the most of what you had. This cookie recipe kind of caught my eye and I'm debating trying it. What do you think?

Mrs. Paynes Cookies

2 cups brown sugar

2 eggs

1 cup lard

1 cup corn flakes

2 cups oatmeal

2 cups flour sifted

1/2 tea. soda

1 tea. baking powder

1 tea. vanilla

1 cup salted peanuts - rolled (what does that mean?)

Drop by spoonfuls.....

That's how it ends. I assume I bake them at 350?

I just can't imagine using lard in cookies. Sounds kind of odd, but that's what they must have used before shortening.

Worth a shot?
