Found an old recipe...

and made it this evening. Tamale pie, cut out of the back of a box of Alber's yellow corn meal. The recipe is at least 20 years old. I didn't make it much after Alex came along because he hated cheese after about age 3. I doubled the recipe so I could freeze some for later and take it to work later this week. I did mess up and used double the needed amount of creamed corn. The mixture still tasted good. It's in the oven now.

It'a been a cold windy stay at home day all day long.

I fried me a boneless pork chop, scrambled some cheese eggs and made grits.

isn't that wonderful? haven't they written cookbooks about label recipes over the years? some of the best things my mother made were from the los angeles times...back in the day when they had "real" food sections....still have some of the clippings she had saved....

Lime and salt are for margaritas, you rub the lime around the rim of the glass and then sprinkle salt on it, and then pour the drink into the glass and serve. After 4 or 5, anything you look at is vastly improved. Including soil. Don't drive. Heck, don't even use the hose.

Cheap Deer Repellant that works

Fortunately for me I live in a tight clump of suburbia and deer are seldom a problem as there is wayyy to much traffic. But on the topic of cheap deer repellant, I used to live in a neighborhood with a serious gardener that always used to put little bars of Irish Spring soap on sticks near and around the plants he did not want the deer to eat. He would take a whole bar and break it into 4 pieces. Then he took a small twig (he had an oak tree) and pushed the soap onto it so that it sat at the top like a lollipop. Then he plunged it into the ground so that the soap was about 6 inches off the ground near a grouping of plants he did not want munched. Worked like a charm !!! Granted, he did have to place them about every five feet, but ironically the marbling of the soap on these little twigs added a sort of whimsical character to his overall garden design. There was also the issue of overhead watering and rain. Overtime they would Ã¢ÂÂmeltÃ¢ÂÂ off the twig but not at a rapid pace by any means. RECIPE: Looking for good old fashioned homemade bread recipe.

Here's one I haven't long time!! Almost forgot about it! But it's wonderful and makes the most awesome toast! Dartmouth oatmeal bread.... Proof 1 packet of dry yeast with 2 Tsp sugar in 1/2 cup of warm water. Stir 1 cup of rolled oats ( not instant!) into 2 cups of boiling water Add 2 Tablespoons shortening ( I use crisco.....but bet originally they used lard) 1/2 cup dark molasses Mix and cool Add the yeast mix to the oatmeal mix. Add 5 or so cups of bread flour and knead until smooth. Place in a greased bowl, cover loosley let rise until double....punch down....let rise again....shape into 2 loaves, let rise until double and bake at 350 50 or 60 minutes! And...another Here's a Rye bread Makes 6 loaves. Cook 4 medium potatoes (peeled), drain saving the water and put through a sieve (or mash) proof 2 pkts of yeast (or 3 1/2 teaspoons) in 1/2 cup warm water with a t. of sugar. Mix 4 c. of buttermilk, 3/4 c. dark molasses, 1/4 cup of shortening (she used Crisco, I use butter) and 1 t. baking soda and 1T.salt. Add 3/4 c. brown sugar and 3/4 c, of the potato water. Add enough rye flour to make a dough ( still able to be stirred, but getting pretty stiff).Add the yeast mixture and mix well Add enough white bread flour to (as Mrs. Faust said)work it up, That is until it is stiff enough to knead. knead about 6 to 8 minutes, let rise till double, punch it down and shape into loaves. this works best in bread pans due to the long cooking time--if you don't have 6 bread pans, just "free form" the rest and maybe take it out of the oven a little sooner. Butter top of loaves and raise until it almost cracks on top (this is a very heavy bread!) Bake 350 for 1 1/4 hours. mrs Faust used to divide the dough in half and add about a t. of anise seed to -one half of the dough--I like it--almost like a tea bread.. Good Luck--I'm getting hungry just reading the recipe--it's really a fabulous bread! And this....known to Swedes as Limpa....and Ann's bread is wonderful! From the Kitchen of Ann Straight Swedish Rye Bread (5 loaves) 2pkg dry yeast 1 cup warm H2O dissolve these three ingredients 1tsp. sugar (meanwhile) 1 cup brown sugar 1 cup whiter sugar 1tsp. salt (scant) 1/4 tsp. fennel seed 1 cup shortening (I use oleo) 1/2 (scant) molasses 4 cups warm H2O (combine this), add yeast mixture Stir in 4 cups Rye Flour Work in 8 or more cups of white flour (I use 10 cups) The dough should be soft, but of course it should be workable Knead for 5 minutes Mix well--cover and let rise in warm place until double--- stir or punch down Dump out on lightly floured counter Divide into 5 sections---shape Place in greased pans--let rise Bake at 275 -300 degrees until done

I made tamale pie a lot when my kids were growing up. So yummy! I had to give up cheese--and tomatoes too--so no more tamale pie for me. :-/

I have a "few" of my own old recipes on the counter right now! I was looking for something different to make and found more than I needed! It's been YEARS since I really used any of those recipes. The one I chose, sour cream coffee cake, didn't have any directions; just the ingredients written on the back of an envelope. It's been at least 20 years since I've made that. It was YUMMY!

I like the Bisquick recipes. Cheeseburger pie, and there's a taco one, too. And I made Bisquick biscuits with 7-up and BUTTER!

The first year I was retired I baked myself right out of all my jeans. I've been more careful since then. And I'm back into those jeans.

I like the Bisquick/7Up biscuts too! I also like the bisquick/chicken/broccoli impossible pie.

I still have a bunch of old recipes ( I think) that I don't know what I am going to do with since I moved. Some here, some up at the house.

The tamale pie turned out pretty good.

Susan, not sure about that cookbook, would be interesting to see, though.

I've made taco pie too, from the biscuit box.

I don't have my Brand Name cookbooks here but I have several. Almost every imaginable recipe can be found in them. There are also individual ones like Jello, Bisquick, Philly Cream Cheese, etc., any and every product that had recipes on the packages. A lot of them can be found by googling Brand name recipes which will also bring up amazon cookbooks of the like. Here is one site that may be helpful.

One thing to remember when using old back-of-the-box recipes......the sizes of many products have shrunk so "a can of" or "a box of" might not be the same volume it was when the recipe was originally published.

Never had tamale pie, but I do love tamales. I'll have to look that up.

Aw, susanjf, you must be talking about one of my favorite writers, Ruth Reichl. She was "...the restaurant critic of both The New York Times(1993-1999) and the Los Angeles Times (1984-1993), where she was also named food editor." She surely can write about food.

One of the first things I learned how to "cook" back in the 60's. Saw the recipe on the internet somewhere and made it again last week. Nostalgia! LOL

Cheery Cherry Cheese Pie

8-oz pkg cream cheese, softened
14-oz can sweetened condensed milk
1/3 c lemon juice
1 tsp vanilla extract
14-oz can cherry pie filling, chilled

In medium bowl, beat cream cheese until fluffy.
Add condensed milk, blend thoroughly.
Stir in lemon juice & vanilla.
Pour into graham cracker crust. Chill 3 hours or until firm.
Top with desired amount of pie filling. Serve immediately or chill again until ready to serve.

it's good, isn't it? My younger sister doesn't like it with the cherries on it (what?! everything is better with cherries!), so he serves it on the side.

What is the recipe for tamale pie...that sounds like something I would like...Sounded so good I had to google it...I will try it because I love tamales...I make the real thing every Christmas...

I remember that pie we all made it I bet!
I also love the bisquick recipes, all the impossible pie ones, I have made all of those over the years. Haven't made any in a very long time.
I just bought new binders to sort out my recipes, that will be a task.
Many manufacturer websites have good recipes on them using their products, much like the old box recipes. Kraft, ragu, Rotels, hunts etc I visit them and find really good stuff to try.
Lately though my best resource is pinterest, I have really been pleased with many I have found there.

Albers Tamale Pie Casserole by jinxycat
Prep time: 0:20Overall time: 1:05
6 servings

INGREDIENTS

Crust
1-1/4 cup albers yellow cornmeal
1/2 tsp. salt
1-1/2 cup Carnation Evaporated Milk
1 cup water

Filling
1 lb. ground beef
1 clove garlic, finely chopped
1 cup chopped onion
1/4 cup chopped green bell peppers
1 cup cream-style corn
1/2 cup sliced black olives, drained
1 cup tomato sauce
1 tbsp. chili powder
1 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. black pepper
1/3 cup shredded cheddar cheese

INSTRUCTIONS

For the crust, combine the cornmeal, salt, evaporated milk and water in a small saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring frequently for 5 to 7 minutes or until thickened. Remove 1/2 cup, cover with plastic wrap. Spread the remaining cornmeal mixture on bottom and sides of greased 8-inch square baking dish. Cool for 2 to 3 minutes if necessary. Bake in preheated 425ÃÂ°F oven for 10 minutes. Remove from heat.

For filling, brown beef, garlic, onion and bell pepper in large skillet; drain. Add corn, olives, tomato sauce, chili powder, salt and pepper. Mix well. Spoon into cornmeal crust. Drop rounded teaspoons of remaining cornmeal mixture on top of meat, sprinkle with cheese. Return to oven and bake for 15 minutes.

I found this recipe because someone had been asking for it. You may try adding a small can of green chiles and extra garlic. Maybe enchilada sauce instead of the tomato sauce...

bisquick/chicken/broccoli impossible pie. I haven't done that one! There's a recipe on the back of the Stove Top for frozen broccoli, deboned chicken, mush soup, and stove top. It's good, quick and easy.

That's the cherry cheesecake I always make. Hmm. think I will do that tomorrow. I was planning on a baking/cooking day anyway.
