Casa Lilo CA

The old-timers are always right! It is said that when the fall foliage is particularly bright and colorful, it predicts a cold and dry winter. We had day-glo color on the hardwoods, even the ones generally not so spectacular, so what is happening?

We are way low on the rain, about half of normal and it is cold! There is thick ice on the pond, not safe to walk on, but thick just the same. Jillarry went out with the pedal-boat to play icebreaker, and they could not break it in the shady areas. I played icebreaker by removing the thick ice on the waterlily half-barrel, which houses three fat goldfish.

The sky is azure and the sun is bright and the air is so dry! My hair is full of static electricity and my lips seem to be falling off.

Joann had a nice surprise at the feed store Wednesday, the salvage people gave her about 20 lbs. of roast-beef, frozen, salvaged from a delivery truck rollover, she is sharing it with me, and what I don't eat myself, dogs and cats will appreciate it. Would you call it "high class road kill"?

These men make their living cleaning up after accidents, and whatever is usable, is theirs.

This bright sunshine makes me see all the messes in the house and gets me to clean them, generally it's too dark in winter to do that. My windows! Too cold to do anything about them outside, though.

The sunshine also gives me the illusion that it's time to go out in the garden, definitely an illusion, it's too darn cold!

I shall go outside and put more shavings into Gussie's pen, more straw in her dog house, the cold does not appear to faze her at all, in her former life at the ranch she didn't even have a dog house.

After that, wood-chucking, re-loading the rack on the deck.

After that, tea and some reading, until it's time to feed everybody.

It is cold where I am also, 12 degrees when I got up this morning. Thankfully, we have no wind today and there was bright sunshine. I love the cold when there is sunshine, not when it is cloudy or foggy.

My former boss (a CPA) asked me to come back and help with taxes this year. I am supposed to only work on Tuesday and Thursday, but I worked today until 3, I also took work home on Wednesday. I haven't worked for 2 and a half years, and other than being exhausted each night, it is like I never left. Don't tell my boss, but I am really enjoying it.

I bought a condo today.
It was hard to think about it, harder to actually do it.
I feel like i've been to a funeral.

Life is like that sometimes. It kicks your butt off your
cozy little throne and sets you flat on the floor spinning
around like a top. I don't really want to move, I love this
house. It's nothing fancy but it's mine. I can't picture
anyone else living in it, feeding my fish, paddling about
in my boat, talking to my neighbors and smelling my flowers.

However, a condo will make life easier for me. It's smaller,
closer to town, no yard work, my son lives just down the
hill. It's the right time to do it. There now, don't I feel
better.

We spent much of the day taking Katrina to the doctor,
getting precriptions filled, paying bills. We ate at
Logan's Roadhouse today, if I live to be a hundred, i'll
never get used to throwing peanut shells on the floor.
We took her by the condo but she was afraid to get out and
go in because the whole place was covered with sheetrock
dust and was a touch slippery for her crutches.

We ate dinner at the country club tonight and it was just
too much food. I feel like a blimp and surely I must look like one.

Tomorrow we will go to Atlanta to spend the day with a
friend. I went to school with her and she has another tumor
on her brain. She is scared and needs her friends right now.

Sunday morning, Neil, Katrina and I are going to Virginia
to see Miss Julia. We'll be back on tuesday in time for me
to unpack and take Neil back to Atlana on wednesday for an
appointment with the Retina guy again, then to the VA in
Chattanooga on thursday, a meeting thursday night and friday
hopefully I can stay home and live in my pjs all day.
I live in my car, i'm thinking I could buy one of those
stretch limos instead of a house to live in.

I"ve got my bank statements and checkbook out to pay bills tonight. I've been poring over new listings at nurseries (and loading shopping carts to be pared down drastically before I submit). That's half the fun though...deciding. One decision is that my grocery bill will be cut these next 2 months...less fancy condiments at outrageous prices. Plain vinegar and oil. Fewer exotic cheeses. I've got to quit hanging around the foodies at the Cooking Forum... I do like my new cookware, though ~grin~. But it will be garden purchases now through March...I've seven large pots to fill and looking for cedar planting boxes. I've some that are 20 years old and still truckin'. josh

The Hummingbirds used to get to North Georgia on April 15th every year. The past few years it has been the last week in March. I love those little birds. To be honest, I love all birds. I can't believe all the beautiful birds and critters we have in our lives. If we only would take the time to get to know them and their habitats I can guarantee we would never be bored. I have been watching and studying birds for over 40 years and still learn something every day.

Ya know, both of my sisters recently enrolled in Masters programs (one for teaching, one for nursing). The nurse-sister is taking all her classes online through an OH university, and doing the clinical work through the CT hospital where she already works full time. The teacher-sister is taking evening-weekend-summer classes, nearly all of them off the campus of the University offering the program, which is 200 miles away. Higher Ed really is making great accommodations for its most serious --- and arguably most successful --- students: working adults. As for avoiding the institution that employs you for fear of rejection... with much love, I say to you "That's stupid." Really! I mean, what's the worst that can happen? They say no? Are you any worse off than you were before? No. But what if they say yes? Wouldn't the possibility of having a diploma from there be worth the risk? Seriously, folks in admissions are looking to fill the school with qualified, serious students who are likely to succeed. They often look the other way at test scores or previous course work for stable adults with ties to the community and stellar recommendations. Before you write it off, ask around... see if you can buy lunch for someone in admissions. Be frank. Talk about your strengths and weaknesses. Put aside fears of rejection and ask them for guidance or a way to make it work. You might just be surprised. Think of all the things in your life you would not have if you did not try because rejection or failure was a possibility. Focus instead on the possibility of success. in the pants> Kind of odd in a way, how your life revolves so completely around your Love of Ed... You've got Big Ed, Little Ed, Higher Ed, and who knows? Maybe someday, there'll be Continuing Ed! Enjoy the EdVenture!
