Y'all dead here? Sheesh wake up! I need your Vacation help

I'm almost dead...I came back from CT and had a gastro bug which made me lose 9 pounds in two days. Not fun....

I also need some advice on vacation spots. Some friends with their four kids want to go vacationing with us and have suggested the Sands resort on Myrtle Beach. That seems a tad far to drive just to get some shore time, particularly since they are from CT. The attraction to the planner of this nightmare seems to be: 1. Beach time 2. sleeping quarters consisting of 4 beds, for 8 people, 4 adults, 4 kids 3. ability to cook in living quarters 4. variety of things for the kids to do on site: water park, beach... and restaurants near by.

Now it occurs to me that there HAS to be something closer than the southern shoreline of SC. But, I admit, I don't do this kind of vacationing and this seems like sheer hell to me. Anyone have any better suggestions? Places to look????EEEK!

If you even have an inkling Myrtle is not to your liking, trust me, it will be pure hell. It is a great place for kids/teens. If you're dragging along teens that like to walk on the wild side, bring lots of xanax. They'll think they died and went to heaven.

I can't stand Myrtle Beach other than in the winter.

Try looking into the south Jersey shore. There are boardwalks for the kids, but fewer people, and it's less commercial, quiet areas can be found. When I was last there about 10 years ago, it was still a much nicer area than Myrtle and it hadn't changed much since I was a kid (having grown up in Jersey, I spent a lot of time there).

Maybe try the Del-Mar-Va peninsula. Chincoteaque (sp) used to be a fairly nice island for families, granted it's been years and years since I've been there. A relative used to have a house there. There is the added attraction of the wild ponies.

If your friends are intent on coming south, there's always Hilton Head. You could also Google the south NC coast, as there are nice beaches there too.

In all of these areas you can rent houses/apt/condos. The biggest issue you might face is finding something available, it's rather late for summer beach plans (hey, that would get you out of it gracefully).

Don't I know it....although the Myrtle Beach place was saying that this week we are looking at is their slower period...I'm thinking yah, hurricanes...

Thanks Laur....I frankly would like to find a cabin near a lake and let the kids canoe, kill mosquitos and generally run wild....two 10 year olds and 2 13 year old girls....one of whom I caught sipping my wine (not my daughter, the other one) would give me heartburn I think...especially since they both are gorgeous and have bods which...well, they are showing off a tad too much for this antiquated mother....

Hey Mike.. The day is dark..where's the sun? lol..Wonder if it's going to snow..Has it snowed up east yet, or too early? One thing about snow...it brightens up a home..ever notice? Snow reflects off walls (I only use Semi-Gloss White paint) and other bright objects.. Mike, the things we do for our plants! I've placed aluminum foil behind plants so when we do have sun, it reflects off the foil..lol.. One time, I tried collecting snow for plants..lol...Don't bother. One year, I placed containers outside while it was snowing, blizard-like. The containers collected snow, filled, 'which took forever,' then brought inside to melt..I wanted to cry. There was about 2" of water..lol..All that work for nothing.. Here's another thing I do, but am not recommending. When snow is fresh, I grab a handful and place directly on soil. Most of you reading this are shaking your head, thinking, she's NUTS, lol, but fresh snow, although cold, is pure. The problem doing this is it can chill roots..So, when I add snow, it has to be sunny and early in the morning. Never at night. So far, Thank God, snow has never harmed a plant. Again, I'm NOT telling anyone to do this.. BTW, I don't add snow to cactus and succulents. I agree about caring for our plants like children, with one exception..What's the number one plant killer? OVERWATERING. Sometimes, people kill plants because they're too caring, and continue adding more and more water..Leaves droop, so they think, oh oh it needs more water or fertilizer..then the plant dies.. So, yes, I agree, we need to be alert, (especially when a plant shows signs of distress,) inspect, mist, shower, water when needed, fertilize at the proper time, etc, but never in excess.. BTW, if I'm not mistaken, the number 2 killer is over-fertiliizing. 3 is underwatering. Then there's the INSECT problem..sheesh..in some cases, insects are beyond our control. Especially for those starting out..they go shopping, find a pretty plant, unaware it's loaded with mites, bring home, and a wk later the plant is dead. But never neglect plants either. Heck, I talk and sing to them..lol..you should see my birds when they see me talking, especially singing to a plant..lol..it's hilarious. I found the variegated CC on Ebay..Ebay is the BEST..I wouldnt have half the plants I do if it wasn't for Ebay or the internet in general. Most stores and nurseries here sell the same, old, common plants. When they get something they deem rare, prices are hiked up 100%. Terrible. Oh, I agree, 'playing' with plants is more 'funner' than cooking or cleaning..lol. Oh you do have a MOO??? GReat..Flowers don't last long like you say, similar to tropical Hibiscus. Speaking of which, my Hib tree had several buds and one opened flower..it opened 3 days ago and still going, but starting to look crinkly..I snapped a pic last night, but haven't put it on Flickr yet.. What I'd love to find is a variegated MOO..lol..now that be sometehing..I'd also like to find a variegated Stephanotis..ohhh, wonder if any exist..lol.. Have a wonderful day..hugs, Toni

Well, I kinda like the "Lots of Love" idea. Heh. That year I had such great success with my candy onions -- actually great success with ANY onion -- I did something that I don't know if it helped or not. I soaked them in Jerry Baker's "Root Revival Tonic": 1 tbsp of mild dish soap, 1/4 cup of strong tea and 1 tbsp epsom salt, mixed well into 1 gallon of water. This is from his book, "Old-Time Gardening Wisdom". I had used it to soak some bushes I was planting and instructions said up to 24 hours. I didn't soak the onions in it but about an hour. They made the water really "onioney" and I was worried I'd made a big mistake. But I set them out right away and those were the best and biggest onions I'd ever grown. I also didn't set them out till April 15, the approximate date of our last frost. We got a frost after that and I went out and covered them all. What concerns me is that sometimes the frost will cause the onions to think they've had another winter, and that triggers bolting to seed. Last year, I didn't soak the onions. I put the ones I got from Dawn out immediately, which was sometime in early March, I think. And then I planted Southern Belle Red later on. Of course it was a weird year and so hard to judge because of that. Got some decent-sized onions from Dawn's plants, but nothing like the previous year, others stayed small and a few of them went to seed. The Southern Belles that were planted later didn't bolt to seed but they didn't grow any, either. I dug them back up and will be planting them around April 15 to see if they'll go ahead and do anything. This year, whatever I end up getting, I'm going to try the soak again, and wait till April 15. I know this goes against standard practice, but it did work for me that one year. Maybe I was just having "Dumb cluck luck". We'll see what happens.

nickjoseph and nippstress: The name of the rose is Spectra, and that is how it looked yesterday. In 2014 it emerged around July 15 after that brutal winter. It did not flower, and was a weakling in 2014. Now it has 12 basal breaks, and is back to normal. Spectra is a large flowered climber; in France it is considered a hybrid tea if memory serves me correctly. Usually we cannot grow large flowered climbers in the Midwest. I planted two of these elsewhere in town and they died within 2-years. Behind my office where this is grown I have a microclimate that is probably more like Zone 7, with a southern exposure. I have buildings on the West, my shorter building on the North, and a longer one on the East that block the wind. In other words this rose bed is in the inside of a U facing south. I planted a small bed of 5-roses about 15 years ago when I moved in and they grow amazingly well. I have had almost no disease issues in this bed. The Prince gets 4 feet wide, and 5-6 feet tall. Spectra when it comes up timely like it is this year usually gets 8-9 feet tall. About 8-years ago I put a cane in the ground and it grew into a rose bush (Polarstern). If you have any tips how to post pics, I'd appreciate it because it is hit or miss for me. I posted pics on this site more than a decade ago, and even 4-5 years ago on the fruit and orchard subsite, when this site had a different interface. Now, I cannot figure out how to reliably post pics within a post.

Salsa Making Begins Today So If I Disappear, Y'all Know Why

I do use the salsa screen for Annie's Salsa and love it. The salsa screen gives you a semi-chunky puree. I hate to use the word puree, because it isn't really a puree. The sauce screen gives you a puree that is the exact same texture as canned tomato sauce, so I use it for tomato sauce, pasta sauce, ketchup, bar-b-q sauce, etc. The salsa screen gives you something thicker than puree with bigger chunks, but I hate to call it chunky because it really isn't chunky either. It is just bigger pieces of tomato in something that is too semi-chunky to be considered a puree. It is a finer cut than handcut, but I've used it for so long---since around 2008, that I have forgotten what salsa looks like if made from all hand-cut tomatoes. If I am making one batch of Annie's salsa, I usually cut the onions, sweet peppers and jalapeno peppers by hand. If I am making multiple batches in one day, I switch to the food processor and cut huge mounds of onions and sweet peppers, and a smaller mound of jalapenos (or serranos if I am subbing in some serranos for part of the jalapenos to get a hotter salsa) first before I do anything else. Then, I measure out the onions, sweet peppers and jalapenos into gallon zip lock bags, essentially creating a pre-mix of those three veggies that I'll add to tomatoes and the other ingredients one batch at a time. It is a huge time saver, and allows me to get all that chopping out of the way, put the food processer washable parts in the dishwasher, and put away the food processor to keep the counters clear. I have a little herb mill I use to cut up the cilantro in big batches that I can measure out and dump into the previously mentioned pre-mix of veggies, and I do all the garlic at once using a garlic press. If I work really hard in the morning and nothing interferes, I can quickly cut up all the veggies and herbs for up to 4 or 5 batches of salsa in the morning, and then cook/can the salsa in the afternoon. Or, I can do all the chopping and cutting in the evening, and get up and can first thing in the morning. When I do this, I call it speed canning and the one rule my family knows about speed canning is that everyone needs to stay out of my way when I'm speed canning because if they come into the kitchen during that time, I am likely to put them right to work. In the early years here, I cut up and chopped and minced each batch individually as I went along, so when one batch went into the canner, I started processing all the veggies and herbs for the next batch. That seems much slower to me than the speed canning method I use now. I like that I can run all the tomatoes through the mill and be done with it for the day. I like that I can then do the same with everything cut up by the food processor, herb mill and garlic press. I do run through a lot of zip lock bags when doing prep for speed processing, but I can turn them inside out and wash them and reuse them. My favorite thing is merely that once all the chopping and such is done, then all those machines and tools are out of the way and I have all the kitchen counter space available just for the canning part of the process. You have to find what works for you. The method I described is what works for me. Because I grow so many tomatoes and because our plants' spring productive period generally is cut short when the June heat sets in and stops fruitset, I find myself processing huge amounts of tomatoes in the main salsa canning period which normally starts around mid-June and can run through sometime in July. It is almost too much to do in that time frame, but the tomatoes are ripe when they're ripe, so I just deal with it. Once I've made all the salsa I want to make, I switch to making sauce, catsup, bar-b-que sauce, chili base, a veggie juice similar to V-8 juice, etc. During the same time frame I'm making salsa, I often am dehydrating excess bite-sized tomatoes to save for winter snacks and salads, and am freezing excess tomatoes (sometimes whole, sometimes run through the salsa screen for tomatoes to use in cooking in the winter). It always is a relief to finish the main crop of tomatoes. When that day arrives, I pull out about 90% of the tomato plants, leaving a few to provide us with tomatoes for fresh eating for the rest of the summer. It would kill me if I had to keep up that pace of canning all summer long. The biggest trick is just getting the tomatoes, onions, sweet peppers and hot peppers all to be ready for canning at the same time. Sometimes the sweet peppers are lagging behind all the others. When that happens, I just buy sweet bell peppers in bulk so I don't have to postpone salsa making endlessly. While our canning talk has been focused on tomatoes, let's not forget that everything else is maturing at the same time, so I'm usually squeezing in husking and processing corn at the same time, along with picking fruit and processing it, and harvesting snap beans and dealing with them. At least potatoes and onions will sit in a cool room and wait until I can find time to process them. My summer squash was planted (probably in too much shade) at the west end of the garden this year and has been slow to grow, so I'm just now getting enough squash to process. June and July is harvest/processing insanity time and I'm always relieved when it is over. I do not regret that I have a large food processing garden, but there are days I wonder if I've lost my mind. I have wondered what summer would be like if there was no harvest at all to process, and I cannot even picture it. Well, in 2011 there wasn't much of a harvest to process due to the exceptional drought and extreme heat, but we were at fires day and night virtually every day, so I didn't even have time to think about the food that I wasn't processing. That's one reason I try to process 2 years of food every single year. That gives us a big reserve of preserved food to get us through year 2 if any crop in the garden fails in year 2. It just kills me to have to buy produce at the grocery store if it is something we can grow here and preserve. I'd much rather have our own produce, picked and then processed right here at the peak of perfection, or (of course) eaten fresh within a day or two of being harvested. I make my meal plans for the day after doing the morning harvesting, and wouldn't want to live any other way. Sometimes I think that Tim forgets how much money the garden saves us on buying fresh, organic produce, so I drag him to Central Market down in Southlake, TX, after we leave CostCo and I make sure he notices the eye-popping prices of fresh, organic produce. He goes home with a brand new appreciation for all that the garden produces for us, and he also doesn't mind buying organic lettuce or whatever in the summer because he understands what we can and cannot grow here in the heat. He appreciates organic produce more than he used to because he has learned how hard it can be to grow organically. I cannot imagine our lives without the garden, but every now and then I'd like to have a day where nothing is waiting to be harvested or to be washed, sorted, blanched, cooked, canned, frozen, fermented or dehydrated. I do stay very busy in the main harvesting/canning season, but I have days I just want to be lazy and do nothing. However, what I have found is that when the lazy urge strikes, after a couple of ours of laziness, my conscience gets the better of me and I get up and to into the kitchen and deal with the waiting produce. Our first southern peas now are 3 or 4 days from harvesting and I am excited, even though that means I am about to start in on the endless routine of shelling peas. I love it even though it is time-consuming. To me, nothing says summer like sitting with a big bowl of purple hull peas and shelling them. Then, if I have enough purple hulls, I make purple hull pea jelly. And, of course, we get to eat purple hull peas for weeks and weeks and weeks in the summer, and I put up and freeze the rest. I also planted a long row of lima beans this spring, and they are flowering now, though I don't know if they've set any beans yet. I just kind of run right past them every day to get to the tomatoes. I don't even have to look at the calendar in summer, and neither does anyone else in my family. We can tell, at the very least, what month it is by what produce is piling up in the kitchen. I kinda love that, though there's days I also hate it. I was normal when we moved here in 1999 and was perfectly happy if the garden produced just enough for us to eat fresh and give away the excess. Over the years, though, as the soil improved and our yields improved, I realized that I could preserve huge amounts of food if I tried. So, I do. I grew up with a father who gardened and canned, and with many relatives who did the same, so putting food by was nothing new to me. It is just that when we lived in town on a relatively shady lot, I couldn't grow enough of anything to have much excess left over after fresh eating. Vacation expectation not equal to reality. Though in this case it could not be as bad as my imagination says it would be.

Sun, sand, teenage girls, giggling, salt water, washing, cooking, organising. Yuk.

if you must go to a beach (they are OK for walking) go to Trinity Beach Queensland, Australia. Next May to September. Agist out your daughter. Take your hubby. Off the main tourist route.. Listen to the waves breaking on the sand in the early morning. watch the sun rise. Be careful though where you spread your towel because there are coconut palms overhead. And if one of those nuts decides to fall......

Arthur has a point. As long as you can overlook all the sharks. The beaches are gorgeous down there.

Any one want to take bets on how many piercings and tattoos these kids come home with if Lisa et al go to Myrtle Beach?

If I remember correctly, they've banned thong bikinis, though.

I believe the off-season does start in the middle of August. Not because of hurricanes (we don't worry about them until they're knocking on the back door-Alberto forced me to take 2 naps on Tuesday, glorious sleeping weather) but because the kids return to school mid-August in this part of the world. Truth be known, early Sept is the best time as the temps have dropped just a couple degrees but it's more tolerable. The water is at it's highest, in the 80's I think.

Laura, i wouldn't go swimming there, but it was beautiful. The surf etc. is much better near Sydney. This is off topic and no help to Lisa. Sharks? About three people a year killed and i think they are taken by the white pointer in Southern Parts. Funny how people are scared of sharks or flying or box jellyfish or snakes or funnel webs or blue ringed octopus when the chances of death are thousands of time greater just taking a trip in the family car.

Can you bathe topless in pure USA?

No we can't sun bathe topless in the puritanical USA. Junior might get the urge to beat off leading him to rape and pillage, smoke crack, knock-up a chick or two then murder his parents. When he gets out of reform school run a company like Enron. All the while raising the perfect family but having multiple mistresses, drinking too much and hiring undocumented domestic help.

Arthur, do you really not know that sex is the root of society's problems?

Neither did I.

I wonder how many accidents that occur while on the proverbial "family vacation" are really not group suicide.

Hey - I live a little ways down the road from Myrtle Beach. It's not all the brochures make it out to be. IMHO it's definitely not worth the drive from CT. In fact, I can't think of anything here in SC that is worth a drive from CT. Unless of course you are set on surrounding yourself with hicks in order to make you truly appreciate your home state. :) And I can say that because I was born here and have lived here off and on for far too many years.

One place I would drive from CT to vacation in is the Shenandoah Valley of VA. Unless of course you are completely set on getting sand in places God never intended. Then just go to Virginia Beach because it is practically a clone of Myrtle Beach and will knock 7 hours off of your drive. Sadly enough, thongs are illegal at both beaches.

Lisa, Crikey, don't you Americans know nothing. Shrimps are prawns.
Hence the sayings.. "Don't come the raw prawn" "Off like a prawn in the sun." etc.
As for cooking a prawn on a barbie...in my eighty five years i've never seen anyone do that.
Not much help here in achieving a Walt Disney style happy family holiday, all you are getting is the Simpsons version.
It occurs to me that perhaps George is America's Queen Victoria and this is a similar pure period. Of course, sex is the problem. Our own more cunning version of George is keeping us on the straight, narrow true path.

If you're determined to make it a beach I recommend Ocean City , MD - similar to Myrtle & VA Beach but not quite as geared towards teens, nice long boardwalk & some charming little beach hotels a ways up (north) from the center of town, but still on the boardwalk. Much closer than SC too. North of OC there's Rehobeth Beach which is even less commercial, but harder to find lodging. Of course Atlantic City is out of the question right? That's where I'd go but with kids, I dunno.

Hi Lis!

I can't help with suggestions of where to go since I'm a west coaster. But I can completely and wholeheartedly agree with Laura and Gin. Take lots of xanax, valium or something similar. If you don't want to take it, slip it into the kids' juice. And start planning a quiet, private, child-free trip NOW for you and Carlos for after your family vacation. Trust me, you will need one. I'm speaking from experience here.....................

We took a 14 year old and two 19 year olds to Maui last year. They weren't nearly as annoying as younger kids and I still ran out of xanax before the trip was over. Luckily for me, a lady that worked at one of the galleries I visited several times while we were there felt my pain. She very kindly dipped into her personal valium stash (she needed them to deal with all those pesky tourists) and shared with me. She was my personal savior from that point on.

I personally believe that vacations with children aren't vacations at all. They are some sort of cosmic penance for past transgressions.

Well Lis, we aren't dead but we aren't much help either.

The father of one of my neighbors, has a house/condo in Carolina beach NC. I asked tonight if he was renting it, as he does sometimes, my neighbor didn't know as the last she heard he was trying to sell it. If you're interested, and she remembers to ask, I'll let you know if it's available. You could drive the kiddies to Myrtle Beach at night. Carolina Beach is rather sedate as beaches go, it's right outside Wilmington. There are porpoises that hang out in the ICW at Carolina Beach. I was told once(maybe more) that's it's really embarrassing when I'm standing on a dock jumping up and down pointing at them, when they are jumping in the water. Well, okay, we didn't have them in Jersey, it's just too cool to see them up close in the wild. Sea turtles have the same effect on me.

michigoose - so sorry to hear you were sick! I enjoy your posts here.

Anyway, my 2 teenagers - bless 'em - *love* Canada. Could you talk them into Quebec? or Montreal (Botanic Garden magnifique!) You get to 'murder' the French language (just smile a lot and try "merci"), see a "foreign country" and you won't need a passport this year.. Not so in the next coming couple of years.

My kids were thrilled to walk Rue St. Catherine in Montreal...the underground shopping was something else...and we stopped at a TV studio that had a huge picture window onto the street. They (we) saw a very popular American band be interviewed and play some numbers.
The subway is tres cool.

Well, just a suggestion

OY! Now the plan is Pennsylvania....I don't know where in Pennsylvania...but your suggestions are really welcome.

Can you see my head spin?????? ARGH. I just want to stay home and putter in my garden, finish painting the fence and paint all the rooms I haven't yet painted in this house. Oh yeah, and Ihave about 20 plants I need to repot.

The current plan is to go to Lancaster (thank heavens!NOT Myrtle Beach.....or Va beach....or...). I've rented a house in Christiana. No TV :) However, the guy who is an engineer for ESPN and the kids may revolt....I'm going at the end of August...

Yah....I think everyone is away.....or something....I'm just or something. ;)
