Every 17 Years

This time, it seems like there are fewer than I remember from 17 years ago when the ground was thick with cicadas and the noise was cacophonous.

They hatched already!?! Is this species different than the ones we see every summer? They usually dont hatch until late June to Mid July. Odd...........

Yep, they're different. They come every 17 years. When I was planting earlier in the spring, every shovel full of dirt had cicadas working their way up to the surface.

I pulled up a website on the cicadas by doing a web search on the internet. Like you, I had the same concerns about all the seedlings I had started. To my surprise, I found that the cicadas feed on the roots underground and the only damage done is from when the female lays her eggs in the branches of small trees (larger, more established trees can survive the damage caused with no problem) The site I found also stated that any damaged caused is not from them feeding on your plants. Do Yellow Buckeyes 'skip' years or not bear fruit every year?

In these last couple of dry years here in Georgia, my buckeyes (red ones here) have started to form fruit (nuts) only to abort them later in times of stress. So that may have happened to yours this year. Last year I was lucky to get about 8 total compared to 40 the previous year. This year is better, I think I'll get about 25.

If you observed an emergence a few years ago then the cicadas in your area most likely don't belong to this year's brood (Brood II). In NC, there was an emergence of the 13-year Brood XIX ("Great Southern Brood") in 2011 and of the 17-year Brood XIV in 2008. They are scheduled to emerge again in 2024 and 2025, respectively, although sometimes premature emergences may occur. While a number of broods may be present across a state, one brood often dominates a particular area. We remember seeing many dead cicadas in 2011, so we think the Triangle area may be a Brood XIX territory. Here is a link that might be useful: Cicada broods

Hi Toni, Yea, the plant is not looking good at all, but that was what most all the plants looked like here. Thinking I need to cut it back for this year, as it isn't going to bloom. The past few days of heavy storms here finnished them off. Seems so quiet now, but really starting to show in all the trees around here, where they have cut into branches. Got small branches laying all over the ground and many dead branches hanging in the trees. Thank goodness they only come about every 17 years!! I saw a regular big green one yesterday in back yard on a sapling. Told him how nice it was to see him instead of the others for awhile. LOL I had more than my share of them. Ingorant things have the whole sky to fly around in yet could still manage to light on my neck from across the yard, every time I stepped outside! Couldn't stand sitting out side for long, but now I can again. : )

I didn't realize how colorful they were. Those a great pictures. We don't seem to have as many each year either. Another bug I haven't seen this year at all are the daddy long legs. Not a single one.

Thanks for the link...I didn't realize they existed only in the eastern US...I had them confused with the locusts/grasshoppers. Interesting that there are still things biologists don't know about them...guess they are excited to have them emerge for new research! josh

There was an interesting piece on NPR today about this 17 year event. Pretty amazing. Also, some people consider them good to eat!
