It's easy. I did transplants with mine when I grew it a couple of seasons ago. I planted 2 to 3 in a cell pack (72 cells per flat), and planted them out when they were about 4 to 6 inches tall. Sowed in April, planted out mid-May, and harvest was in late June. They got to be about 18" to maybe 2 feet tall, IIRC. I just waited until the first flower buds on the stalk were close to popping open, and picked the whole thing off at ground level. To use it, I cut off the lower tougher part of the stalk, saving the leaves, and threw leaves and the upper portion with the buds into the pot. Basically, just think of it as kale with the bonus of a small broccoli type floret on top. The floret is quite small, maybe quarter sized. I think it would be fine as a spring or fall crop.

Thank You, jaynine............It does look similar to the Pycanthemum tenuifolium, but with much softer, whiter, and fleshier stem. Thuis is definitely a water plant......As I remember, (My mom used to have the Mountaiun Mint), it's a stiff, upright plant that grew on dry land. This would not survive on dry land, and the stem is trailing......horizontal.

This question is driving me crazy. Since none of us can think of a correct spring blooming perennial, I'm going on the assumption that they were started from seed indoors or in a greenhouse and are ahead of their bloom time. What about lupine? I know the leaves aren't lance-shaped, but if it was a quick look, I suppose they could be mistaken for such. Another is campanula glomerata. What about Agapanthus (hey, it starts with 'A')? The other thing I came up with, in addition to many of those the rest of you suggested, is a primula. Are there any "blue enough to be called blue" that send up a spike?
