Bad to push a self propelled?

I have a Craftsman 22" self propelled bagging lawn mower, its about 5 years old.

It drives incredibly slow, and when it is shifted into driving gear it will not allow you to push it. If you do not put it into driving gear, you are able to push it at a steady, maybe speed walking speed. although this is far more convient time wise, im thinking it may damage the driving mechanism.

I have 2 questions.

The first being is it damaging for me to walk it fast without shifting it?

The second being, is there a low risk way of speeding up its drive mechanism?

Ide like to consider myself mechanicly minded, but i dont wanna find myself down 100$ with lawn mower parts all over my garage.

Thanks for the help.
