Anyone PUSHING the mower fast instead of self-propel

Hi, Found the Honda HRX with cruisecontrol not fast enough for the way I would like to mow the large lawn. Wondering if anyone here might have experience and opinions with regard to the Honda HRS216PDA? I like the light weight 63 lbs, yet solid build, but haven;t used one or tried using a true push mower in many years. Thanks, Astro

Personally, I think running with a machine that has a
sharp blade spinning at 3600 RPM, is not safe.

What you need is Toro Personal Pace. It is capable of unbelievable top speed but also goes infinitely slow - it simply follows your speed. The technical explanation of how it does this is tedious, but because the belt is always slipping, the gear ratio has to be high to provide adequate drive at the usual mowing pace - if you were to use two hands, one on the fixed crossbar and one on the sliding handle to squeeze it all the way down, you would be looking at about 10 MPH. This condition would never be encountered using the mower at a normal pace or even a fast pace. I mention it only to illustrate the speed potential of the system. There is no way you can out-pace this system.

Any Toro or Lawn-Boy with Personal Pace/Sens-a-Speed will go as fast as you can walk, I don't care how long your legs are. The more you push the handle, the tighter gets the drive belt and the faster it goes. Other options would be 3-speed mowers - the top gear is usually pretty fast. Hone* Depot is selling the LB 10685 for $349 - pretty hard to beat. *I left that typo in because it gave me the idea of opening a giant knife, scissor, saw blades and chains and mower blade sharpening center; "Hone Depot" - whaddaya think? LOL

The rule with lawn mowers (and most other consumer products) is that you usually get what you pay for. Yes, it will start and cut the grass. It will do a passable but not spectacular job of bagging and mulching. The engine is the last thing you should be concerned about. On a mower in this price range the engine will easily outlast most of the other components. Expect that after a few years control handles will start to break, wheels will loosen, the mower will sound rattly, etc.

You cannot get RWD with big wheels. The largest wheels on a RWD are on the Honda HRX at 9" diameter. Most other mowers have 8" wheels - some have 6" wheels on the front. If you throw out the big wheels, there are many mowers that fit your description. Along with Skane, I suggest checking your home centers/hardwares frequently to snag a bargain. I have bought several mowers that way. Sometimes you have to do some minor work on them, but its worth it. I got a 'reconditioned' Lawn Boy 10684 at Home depot for $139. This means somebody bought it, used it hard and took it back. I don't know what they did in the 'reconditioning', but I had to replace the blade driver, blade stiffener and blade because of bending/damage/vibration. This was four years ago and its still one of my favorite mowers. You can get a bargain if you know what you're looking at.

You Got To Be Kidding Me! After discussion here regarding the self propell speed, which is way to fast, I have since found out this is a typical complaint on this mower. I took the mower out this past weekend and found this mower to be a complete joke! The wheels are spinning like crazy and when the wheels do grip it's a complete chore to keep the mower straight. Meaning.. the wheels are going real fast and if the left one grabs, well, it pulls left and if the right wheel grabs, well, now it wants to go right. A complete struggle to cut the lawn and forget going up hills. The trick is to run with this mower and keep up with the self propell speed amd it works just fine! Very sad that this mower is on the market. I will say, the B&S 6.75 HP motor does run great but the self propell is a very poor design.

I am 6'4" tall and couldn't outrun my Toro PP. Best self propelled system I have ever used.

I have a Lawnboy with the Sense-a-Speed propulsion system. I like the fact that it is capable of propelling very slowly on the assumption that it is always better to take a little longer to cut the grass as opposed to suffering a heart attack.
