Craftsman Self Propelled Drive Gear Lubricant
Comments (9)I'm currently in the middle of this repair. In my case, I found a hole in the lower half of the case (rock?), the case full of grass clippings, and the gear stripped. Ordered the gear and the lower case from searspartsdirect.com (very reasonable). The specified sealant (Dow Corning 709) doesn't seem to exist. Sears service advised that they'd have to "look into" the matter of the sealant and what lubricant to use. When the parts arrive, I intend to use 85W-140 gear oil and seal the case with Permatex Blue RTV - unless I hear otherwise from Sears Service......See MoreHow much grass is too much for a Self Propelled?
Comments (9)Hi, I made a mistake when I went to consider my lawn. I think I have about 1/2 acre of lawn to mow. This was my first time and it was a new house. The professional guys were asking for about $US 100 a time to mow it. That pans out to $US 3,500 per year. Ouch. So muggins me goes an buys a mower and says to my wife I will do it. I mean for $US 3,500 a year it's got to be worth it.... right .... It turns out it takes me about 4 hours to mow my lawn. I have been at it like this for three years now. I was expecing it would take like maybe an hour. Fortunately I got a good mower, a Honda HRC 216 commercial and it works great. Did I choose the right mower, hmm not so sure.... the main issue for me was storage during the winter months. I am in the NorthEast. And that restricts the mower size. My recommendation is therefore this. Get a few professionals to come and give you a quote to mow your lawn. Get one of them to come mow it and see what they use and how long it takes them. I used to have a commercial guy come, but he used one of these 52 inch walk behinds and gets the job done fast. I only have room in my garage for a 21-inch, and hence it takes me ages. In your choice of mower I would consider the following: 1) Where are you going to store it? Not sure where you are but I only need to mow for 6 months out of the year. Get a machine that you can store. 2) Can you get a big machine around your yard? If so get the biggest one you can .... it will cut your lawn cutting time significantly 3) If your lawn is hilly with slopes go for a walk behind. If your lawn is flat go for a rider 3b) If a rider: Rather than a lawn tractor, I would recomend a Zero turn mower, these are much more manouverable although more expensive I also have a trimmer, Honda HHT 31. This I use for the super hilly bits and the jungle areas in my yard. Also to get to the bits of lawn which are too tight for even a 21-inch mower. Warmest regards, Mike....See MoreCraftsman Self-Propelled Lawn Mower
Comments (1)DRIVE CONTROL ⢠Self-propelling is controlled by holding the operator presence control bar down to the handle and pulling the drive control bar up to the handle. The closer to the handle the faster the unit will travel." "DRIVE CONTROL ADJUSTMENT Over time, the drive control system may become "loose", resulting in decreased speed. There are holes in the drive control housing to increase tension on the drive cable. Proceed as follows: 1. Turn unit off and disconnect spark plug wire from spark plug. 2. Loosen nut, move drive control housing down handle to the next hole and retighten nut. That's from the owners manual. Move it up a hole?...See MoreTwo issues - engine idle and self propel
Comments (15)Next update... I replaced all the gaskets from the air filter all the way into the block. Also cleaned the carb a third time while I had it all apart. Replaced the throttle return and governor springs too. I put on a new plug earlier in troubleshooting, and the only thing that I haven't done is replaced the air filter, but I've run the mower with the filter off completely and it still surges!!! I did find that if I manually play with the choke, I can get it to stop surging, so it sounds like it's just running lean at everything but WOT. I'm about out of options and I'm ready to just live with it, since it still works at WOT and that's where it is when I mow the lawn! The self propel thing is fine as long as I remember to push the lever all the way forward and don't just rely on the spring to completely bring it back! Still haven't found the time to take that lever apart and see what's wrong....See Morejtfs
