Honda HR215SX 1/2/3 speed dosen't work/lock

The self-propelled works. The speed shift lever moves from front to back 1-3 without stopping for each of the speeds. The speed remains constant regardless of where the lever stops. Ideas on what to look for.

You will have to determine first if the cable is actuating the transmission.

It looks like the cable is working. It activates a lever on the transmission that pushes a pin back and forth into the trans. I don't know how far the pin goes-or is supposed to go- into the trans. The length of the pin travel probably depends on where the "1/2/3" lever is. What holds the "1/2/3" lever in place on the handle? Could it be just a cable adjustment?

I'm sorry your salty rusty. IMO its a huge waste of time being bitter and in this application, loggers nothing helpful or insightful at all to help the OP with their issue. If you are only comfortable with the antiquated flathead design of some companies lawn equip then I myself would wonder if you have trouble pouring water from your own boots, directions included or not. To say that OHV design is finniky or hokey is quite amusing as its about as that design is almost as old as the hills aswell and is quite straightforward and offers myriad benefits in every aspect compared to other designs. I'm a 30y old car salesman and have been doing it for 10y. Even though I often work 50-60h a week, I have enjoyed replacing transmissions, engines, installing super/turbo charger systems on many different typed of real cars (perhaps to your delight/dismay, mainly Fords) and also just about every other electrical/mechanical process imaginable. So to make inaccurate, broad but mostly ignorant comments about younger generations just shows the exact same traits in yourself that you so loath in mine. OP, from what I gather with the info you have provided it sounds line you broke a chunk of the threaded plug material from the mower. IMO it would be best to either purchase a whole new engine (perhaps craigslist), or find a local reputable machincr shop and see if they can repair the problem. Other than that maybe you could get a gsv160 (newer Honda motor for lawn equipment) and put it on your mower. From the little searching I did on your motor, they are not readily available and when found are quite expensive. The gsv160 can be had brand new (not rebuilt/furbished) for ~$200.

i removed about 2 oz of oil to make sure it wasn't that stupid. dad didn't seem concerned about that saying it was an insignificant amount. difficult to get an accurate read on the oil level due to the stupid plastic dipstick design but it seems at the correct level. i probably should stick a screwdriver in it to get an accurate read, but like i said, it isn't over-filled oil. i know the symptoms of too much oil -- heavy black smoke and very erratic performance. this is a slight black smoke, excessive fuel consumption (rich burn, burning fuel 4 times faster than it should), slight erratic performance, and degraded rpm. new spark plug was installed and gapped to 0.76mm (factory gap was actually correct). removal of air filter was tested. it is a new air filter replaced 2-3 weeks ago and frequently dusted -- i also typically use a very porous 2ndary filter (similiar to the filling of a comforter) as well to keep larger stuff off the air filter. it isn't those things. i've used new gas from two different sources. i've thoroughly cleaned and checked the carb (needle valve was perfectly clean like brand new and functioning correctly with the floater, the bulb was perfectly clean like brand new except of course with clean gas in it), everything looks good, and really, there isn't much that could go wrong with the carb with everyday use, unless i was burning sand and sludge. i also examined and cleaned the breather and it looked in good condition. the breather was clean except for the expected oil and functioning perfectly. i'm really just asking for advice on what to expect for tearing down the engine, if there is anything special that i need to know. my dad thinks it ran hot with the choke getting stuck and not releasing fully. it is likely internal to the engine. hopefully, it is just a worn belt considering 500 hours (5-10 years of residential use) is about the life of a residential mower engine, but i may have to replace rings and hone the cylinders if it was because of the automatic choke release being used and not releasing even though the lever was fully released due to dirt build-up around the linkage for it. everything else was just fyi to give my review and experience with the craftsman mower and honda engine.

I ran into a similar problem with my brand new (2 week old) Honda HHT35S string trimmer. Basically it worked great for the first two hours of use. But then it developed a problem where it would sputter a little and would not run. I figured I had just run out of gas, but when I filled up the tank and tried to restart it, it was difficult to start and when I was able to get it started, it had a rough idle and would only run a few seconds. I thought I was going to have to return the unit or take it into a service repair shop which I was not thrilled about considering I just purchased this unit new. So I thought why not take a brief look into what's wrong before I load it up and take it back. Since it would attempt to start but then die out quickly, I realized that it had to be either a fuel or air intake issue. I do use 92 octane mixed with Sta‑Bil (fuel stabilizer). I was using brand new gasoline so I knew it was not a stale gas issue. I started inspecting the trimmer by removing the flip down breather/air cleaner cover and checked the air filter to make sure it was not clogged up in any way. Nope it looked brand spanking new ... as it should. Next I started pressing the fuel primer bulb to make sure gas was getting into the carb. I noticed that after depressing the bulb, it would slowly expand back to it original position. Then it stopped expanding completely and just remained depressed. Ah-ha! A fuel-air lock! That would certainly explain the symptoms. I then proceeded to inspect the fuel supply and return lines. It turned out that the black fuel line had a kink in it. Thus it was restricting fuel flow and eventually blocked it all together. For now I have just repositioned the line to get the kink out, but it looks like the rubber hose may be a bit too long and the excess length may be contributing to the kink. So if this problem returns, then I may cut this hose a little shorter so that it has a more natural and gradual bend and does not kink. Hope this post may help somebody who may be experiencing the same problem. Thanks, Robert

Here is a follow up to my June 28, 09 post: It has been two years since the purchase of my HS724WA. Powerful, quite, smooth, maneuverable, fuel efficient - but not reliable. Back in December I took out the Honda to prep for the coming snow. Filled the tank with fresh gas newly treated with stabilizer. Couldn't start the machine with the choke on. It would start with the choke off after many pulls, but wouldn't run for more than about 30 seconds. The local repair shop suggested it was a dirty carburetor. I doubted that since it is only 2 years old, I use stabilizer, and drain the tank at the end of each season. After forking over the $50 pickup-delivery charge, the shop tried cleaning the carburetor three times to no avail. They offered to tear apart the carburetor to determine the cause, but suggested a new carburetor ($47) plus labor ($50) would be a cheaper and safer route. Furthermore I was infomed that I overfilled the tires, causing the back end to ride high, causing the auger to scrape. Apparently the Honda tires "don't have memory", so once overfilled, they remain enlarged even after letting air out. $200 to replace the tires. So 2 years after spending $2000 on an HS724WA, I have to drop an additional $350 in repairs. Obviously I am a little disillusioned by the whole experience. I'll take the blame for the tires, though I wish Honda was a little more vocal on how finicky they are. I am aware they require 8psi and religiously check the pressure throughout the season, using my bicycle pump to make adjustments. I have an analog VDO pressure gauge that works well for my automobile (32psi) and will register 8-60psi. Apparently it is not accurate at 8psi. I recently purchased a low pressure (0-15psi) gauge for $28. Ironically the Honda receives better care than I ever gave my Yard Machines/MTD blower, which ran reliably without problems for 10 years. I like the machine otherwise, but will no longer be able to speak enthusiastically about "Honda reliability".

It has been a while since i opened these up. I had two in a row that had shift fork problems that cause the problem. If you can't change the speed by moving the trans lever then it is in the box. I'll drop a link below so you can look it up and see what happens inside.

It looks like on the Honda Throttle lever parts list that the handle end of the speed control cable attaches directly to the 1/2/3 lever on the handle. This mower has a spring linking the upper end of the speed control cable to the 1/2/3 speed control lever on the handle. I think this is a cluge job. Ideas?

I'm not sure what you are asking. If you've determined the trans needs to come out, you are correct- it is a challenging repair.

Right now I'm wanting to know if the speed control cable is supposed to attach directly to the speed control lever on the handle and not the phoney spring that is currently connecting the speed control cable to the speed control lever on the handle.

The IPL doesn't show a spring on either end of the gear speed control.I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around that. I don't have one to look at either. By your description, you are watching the cable move the lever on the transmission. Confirm that. If it is, and there is no speed variance- I'm thinking its in the box. Fork, shift keys etc.

That's true. I can see the lever move on the transmission. Because the spring - kulge i'm sure - distorts the length of travel that activates the transmission lever/pin that slides in and out of the transmission. Attaching the handle end of the speed control cable to the speed control lever - minus the spring using a bolt or anything else thats hard fixed - may change the transmission lever/pin activation travel distance into the transmission thus activating the different gears in the transmission.
