Name That Plant!

Never seen the likes of this

I first noticed it in mid December small patches near and around a dew of the American beech trees,now it is larger in size and in numbers of patches.This is a wooded area with a river the beech grove has about 150 tree.

any Ideas on what this might be

Your picture is pretty small, but it looks like it's just the fruiting body of some sort of fungus.

There are many fungus that live below the soil helping to break down leaf litter etc. You only see them when they fruit. Toadstools and mushrooms are the obvious examples.

If you want a specific i.d. a larger photo will probably be a good idea.

Again, the picture is pretty small, but to me it looks like a cattail seed head. Do you have kids in the area who could be collecting them and leaving them under your trees? A bigger picture would be most helpful.

It is a relatively common phenomenon called 'fasciation' or a fusing of the apical meristem (primary growth point). A number of plants develop this trait in a very stable presentation - 'crested' types of conifers, fantail willow - but it can occur randomly and seemingly spontaneously with various other plants. Lilies happen to be one, but I've seen it with delphiniums, poppies, foxgloves and euphorbias. No one is absoultely sure of the cause - may be prompted by insect damage or a genetic malfunction - but regardless it is a pretty weird and kinda cool thing to see. btw, your lily will be fine. What makes this even stranger is that I have extensive ornamental gardens too--all mulched with wood chips. In fact the veggie garden is only a couple of feet from very large beds on two sides--no digging at all in the ornamental beds. I've spoken to several people who are pretty good on wildlife and guesses range from skunks to raccoons--though the coon would have had to climb the fence--and I've never heard of them doing that unless they're after corn. And I've seen no scat around the yard, and when I had a coon a few years ago and had only a single strand electric fence and a short galvanized wire fence that I stepped over, the coon didn't attempt to enter the garden until the first corn was just about ready. I just hope it never happens again; after all how long before it starts on the bed?. I'm quite nervous about tonight, I must admit.

I had a plant that did the same thing several years ago...we call it THE MONSTER. The first year I had 54 flowers...the next year over 100. And then, someone who shall remain nameless, put in a stake to help it along. HE put the stake right through the bulb and that was the end of that. But I did enjoy THE MONSTER while it lasted and I know you will enjoy yours!

Plantwizard Thanks you are correct A friend stopped by
last evening and I showed it to him he confirmed
it as cattail seed heads.

Blueangel, I am so sorry. I couldn't have been more wrong! I probably shouldn't even have attempted an id on a photo I couldn't see properly. I am so glad the theplantwizard stopped by and corrected me.

Yes - that was a pretty cunning id. As soon as I read it I could see the brown sausage shape which had burst open. Very astute!
