Name That Plant!

Unknown Tree with White Flowers

We has several of these trees in our back yard (central Florida). They are about 20 years old and about 15-20 ft high. They bloom this time of the year (mid February), but only for about 2 weeks. The flowers are small white with 5 petals. Green sepals show between the petals. They have white filaments which surround 1 longer light green filament. All which have yellow anthers on the end of them. These flowers attract lots of different types of bees and such. Later after the flowers all fall off, the trees will have small red cherry like berries on them that the birds don't seem to eat. Therefore neither do we. Would love to know the names of these trees so that we can research how to care for them. Thank you.

sigh.... you have there a Golden Raintree (Koelreuteria paniculata) Medium-sized deciduous tree. Fast growing. Drought tolerant. Very showy yellow flowers, followed by very showy coral seed pods. Yet for all these endearing qualities, this tree can be terribly invasive, as it produces thousands of seeds that sprout readily and are spread by wildlife. I personally don't have a problem with GRT, but understand that they can pose a threat to the native landscape, and they are messy at times. Some people love them. Some people hate them. Flowers look like plum, leaves aren't developed yet and fruits not shown.

Twigs might indicate Malus. If a Prunus fruits will be pitted and succulent, like plums or cherries. If a Malus like little apples, with mealy flesh and multiple small seeds in a chambered center.

I think it may be the white flowering form of Malus angustifolia, southern crabapple, which is native to Florida.

That Dave's picture looks like a pear to me. Somebody probably found some Callery pear seedlings growing as weeds and misidentified them as a native crabapple. Assuming the plants native to a particular area are all you will see growing wild there seems to be a common mistake.

Callery pear has smaller flowers and many more blooms per cluster.

The leaves in that picture on Dave's Garden don't look right for "narrow leaved" crabapple.

But I still think the flower in this post (the original) could be a crabapple.

I still think it's a plum tree, and would definitely suggest looking in that direction.

The fruit would solve the Prunus/Malus debate. Maybe we just have to wait.
