Lawn Boy 10424 Gold

I have intermittant starting problems, to the point that I have taken the machine to the dealer twice, and both times it has started while there.

At home and at the dealer, I prime it twice and give it a few cranks. If it doesn't start, I give it one more prime and try again for about 10 primes.

When id does start on the first or second pull, it will continue to start on the first pull until the next day, when it will not start at all.

This is getting embarrassing for me. Any suggestions?

It's one of those marginal ignition coils that make me so mad. You can't diagnose something like that with any certainty. I had one recently like yours. It would start sometimes when dry and hot outside but not if any moisture was around. Now with a new coil it starts on the 1st or second pull in almost any condition. It even started second pull after getting soaked by the hurricane we had recently. Yes...my "educated guess" is that your problem is a marginally operative coil. (Translate that as a weak coil.) Replace it. I could be wrong but I'm thinking if it was some other obvious problem the dealer would have fixed it. You can't really diagnose these coils that work intermittently....just replace them. It's a gamble of sorts but no worse than another trip to the dealer for nothing.

It's always a good idea to have a spare one around anyway, if nothing else it can be a good diagnostic tool with an intermittent problem such as yours.

Having said that, I still can't believe no one has come up with a (high quality) retro fit CD pack for Lawn boys given the huge fan base and market.

If you get $200 for it, and it is used, that's a fair price. If you find someone who wants it really bad, they might pay more, who knows. I get my lawn boys at the dump. I've gotten two over the last month. both run. they are older machines, but hey, they're lawn boys. I love lawn boys. If I put these on e-bay, I'd want about $120 or so for each of them. But right now no plans to sell them, just keeping them.

By 'rectangular head' I'm sure he has an old 'brick top' which would be a 'C' as Walt said. Whatever it is, it is a rare and collectible Lawn-Boy, and at the least would be fun to use once in awhile just for that distinctive scent - toasted grass on the under-deck muffler, fresh-cut grass and Lawn-Boy oil, all combining for a unique mowing experience, not to mention the 'burble' and 'power hum'. be careful with the mix, it might be 16:1. Whether 16:1 or 32:1, I would use Lawn-Boy oil in it.

Well well well. Guess what I stumbled into this morning?! (2) brand new in the box 10424s and (1) brand new in the box 10247!!! I've been looking for months & found (3) in one day! I'll keep you guys informed, I'll be getting rid of a few of these as I'm buying them all now & will decide later. ;-)

the head come off with 4 bolts thats easy. but im asking whats the proper or easyiest way to insert the piston in the cylinder with the rings compressed since the dura force pistons now have alignment pins within the piston ring slots making the process more dificult without a ring compressor then prior lawn boy models. Also is there a ring compressor lawn boy made for this series engine since its a larger diameter piston thank you

I agree with overkillphil that an improved Lawn-Boy coil would be something I'd buy. I'd pay $10 bucks more for one. That's a huge amount when it comes to mass production and should make a big difference in the unit. I hate planned failure of parts like the cd pack. It's so dang obvious that it was built to fail so they could sell ten million more at $35 each.

Ive heard they sell aftermarket knockoffs now for about 20 bucks on Ebay. Not a cure but at least easier on the pocket.

rdaystrom, good point about the planned obsolescence. I hate to admit it, but all the EPA has to ban now are the replacement and repro CD packs and they have effectively killed every Lawn boy built after points went the way of the dodo bird!

Sounds like the coil to me too. They get that way sometimes and then sometimes they just quit altogether, which I would rather have them do.
