2012 Scion Swap Apples and Pears

Hey gang - its never too early to start talking scion swaps. I'm looking for rare heirloom/antique apples and pears - especially ones that are facing extinction. I've got a 2,000 tree preservation collection in Eastern Kansas with over 1,000 varieties in the ground to trade from. I'll be updating my availability list over the winter at my blog and website - link below. I've got more help than ever this season so I'd like to get as many rare apples and pears "backed-up" or saved as possible. Even if you have an unknown tree in the back of an old homestead I'd be interested in swapping - some of these could be an old long-lost variety. Thanks, Rick Godsil, Wagon Wheel Orchard

Rick if you multi graft a tree, how many varities will you put on them?

Most of the trees I did in 2011 were Jonathan trees with 3 others grafted on them - so 4 total. I sold those (on site in pots) for $50 each this fall. They sold faster than anything we've ever had!

Dr. Joseph Stayman had his experimental orchard north of me over 100 years ago and I read that he did all of his with 16 per tree. He would keep track of his layout by the direction he forced each branch. So tree number seven first tier facing north would be ... not a bad way to do it. I currently keep an excel file laid out like a map. I'm starting to fill out my space so I may go to some "frankentrees" like that at some point.

Thanks Raven - I know what you mean! Have you or anyone else had left over wood and tried to graft with it the following year? About 75% of the 2010 scions I have look totally fine. I kept them exactly at 34 degrees with damp (not wet) paper towels in ziplock bags. I have some dormant potted M7 and M111 and I was considering grafting them now and storing them in a cool place (garage, barn or basement) just to see what happens.

In the spring of 2012, I attempted to graft a Pear scion onto my apple tree using Winter Banana Apple as an inter stem. (All of he grafting i do is "Whip and Tongue" grafts wrapped in grafting tape. I then coat the wrapped union with grafting wax) The parent branch was a Winesap Apple branch with a grafted Winter Banana Apple scion from a few years before. (I actually have two of these paired branches.) I then attempted to graft two "Kieffer" Pear scions onto my two Winter Banana Apple inter stems. The "Kieffer" Pear scions started to grow, but died a few weeks later. This spring (2014) I attempted to graft this Apple / Pear union again using the same Winter Banana Apple inter stems. I had just enough branch on my Winter Banana branches to try this experiment one more time. This time around, I used "Sunrise Pear" scionwood. The grafting was a screaming success! (I had enough "Sunrise Pear" scionwood to graft two branches onto my apple tree, and two more onto an ornamental pear. All four pear grafts were a success!) I have no idea why this experiment failed in 2012 and was a success in 2014. I do not know if it had to do with the pear variety used, or if it had to do with environmental circumstances. I will re-post in 2015 with an update. There are a few different treads on this subject so I will be re-posting on those threats also. Below are pictures taken on 07/27/2014.

Unfortunately, I don't have any pear :( I'd really like to get some European pear for winemaking, but I hear they don't do well in the PNW weather. If you do bring any scions to the GE, the best approach is to cut them in the morning, and put them in a jar of water for the trip so they don't dry out. Cuttings should be last year's new growth (the pieces you'd probably be pruning anyway) generally around the width of a #2 pencil and maybe 10-12 inches in length. Personally I probably wouldn't need more than 2-4 scions of each variety, only because some of my grafts don't take, so I figure if I graft several I'm likely to have at least one survive :) Best, Keith

I just use compass direction and height of graft in my log for my multi-grafts. So, SSE@4' is a graft SSE relative to the main trunk which has the start of the graft 4' off the ground. I don't know if this would work for 16 varieties but it works pretty well for up to 8 or so. I once saw some old Burbank notebooks, the way he did his 40-way graft trees was by drawing the tree and marking the graft location. I think that is what you need to do for bigger trees.

40 grafts on one tree? I think there is a mango in India with a lot more then that. I couldn't imagine figuring out what is what.

In S.W. Wisconsin, the town of Gays Mills has a huge number
of large apple orchards. I recall one had a tree fenced off by the building as the 'Heinz 57 tree'. It had 57 different varieties grafted to it! Each branch was color coded. A large sign nearby had a tree silouette on it and
showed what vareity each color was. The tree was very old
when I last saw it about 8 years ago. Not sure if still
alive.

Sounds like a heck of a tree to get scion wood off of! I've been through there a few times, but not lately. I'll have to check that out...maybe they need help pruning it :)

I checked out the info on Gays Mills - amazing number of orchards for a town of 625 people! I may have to put that on the next Griswald-type family road trip.
