Birdhouse for the Neighbors

A neighbor kept putting this old table on the curb and dragging it back up by her door. She didn't seem to want to get rid of it. I asked her for it one day when it was back on the curb, thinking it might make a good birdhouse. She gave it to me and it sat in my yard for about 2 years, looking more sad (or gathering more character) all the time. Finally got around to the birdhouse a few months ago.

Here's the old table.

Put their names on it, of course.

Flat Halloween kitty....

Staring around the corner.

It has a plywood roof with a little wood trim, topped with a metal piece cut from an old above ground pool.

The roof is hinged, so it can be cleaned or used for storage.

An old stove grate keeps it from sitting in water.

Jorge and Clara have several pets, a dog, 3 or 4 cats, and a turtle that showed up in their yard years ago.

I love it all, especially the halloween kitty and their names.
Seeing what you do I can only wonder how anyone can ever throw anything away!
Our garage has parts of a similar table, maybe next spring...

Wow, I love your house, so rustic and gorgeous!! The floorboards look great! I loved looking at the birdhouses too so thanks for starting this post. I picked up a cute little angel birdhouse yesterday, it's at the top of my steps leading to the front door and it says "Every birdie welcome" Not sure if you're into pretty shabby chic or mosaics but I made a couple of them. I also have a collection of birdhouses in my kitchen that I use to buy from a lady that painted them and sold them at our local market. I'll post a pic of them all for you. Sorry about the sizes. I kept resizing them on photobucket but they seem to be still be big when I paste the html tag. Please ignore cob webs in my kitchen lol, obviously I've been doing way too much mosaicing and no cleaning lol.

Thank you for your kindness. We enjoyed making this birdhouse and will have to make some more! We have boxes and boxes of rustic treasures in the garage which Kirk's brother gave us. (Kirk's brother is a bigger collector than Kirk! Runs in the family! Tee hee!) The horseshoe is attached with short, rustic nails. None of the nails went all the way through the wood. Kirk attached the back with screws so the back can be taken off and the house can be cleaned. Thank you again. Carol

My Flicker box is up and I am interested to see if anything notices it. The Red Bellied Woodpeckers are around here everyday and I know they are interested in nesting because I see them picking fights with each other, drumming and calling. They come here to get the suet which makes them notice other things in the yard. At least thats the plan. I have never seen the Downey Woodpeckers look at my box in spite of the fact that they must fly over it many times each day coming and going to the suet feeder. The chicadees are around again multiple times each day. They were here weeks ago and there was a spell were they were not here for awhile. I have some boxes with small entrance holes they can use so hopefully they will pick one of them and be safe from the larger birds.

I'll take anything except HOSP. :) I live in a neighborhood setting..postage stamp sized lots that was built in the 40s-50s, so no bluebirds here...if I was close by to an open field I'd prolly get some though, but no dice. The HOSP are nasty friggin' non-native creatures. I do have a HOSP trap that I used last summer..the neighbor would breed them and I would trap them..it was a lovely cycle. I suppose you are right about letting the Downey have it..which is fine by me..I love those little woodpeckers..the problem I have is that I don't know if once the Downey makes the nest and lays the eggs, will the mylar scare them away as it will be in place to scare the HOSP. Bluebirds, wrens and Chickadees aren't bothered by the mylar strips so that was never an issue. IDK about the Downey and if they are afraid of the mylar strips then we run the risk of them abandoning their nest and or nestlings. BUT if I don't use the mylar the HOSP will enter the nestbox and peck the eggs out and kill nestlings if they are in there..they will also attack the roosting woodpecker too. Catch 22, no?

So nice of you to make it so it can be birdhouse or storage! Critters make it so whimsical, love it! The stove grate is perfect for keeping it from rotting out on bottom. Another 1 of a kind gift!! Bet they will love it!! Jan

Great recycling, linda! Cool table ...but even cooler birdhouse! always love seeing how you use license plates! & looks like you've added your neighbor's personalities to this old wood birdhouse! Love it! The stove grate...a great (grate) idea! I used one of those on a Barnwood Bloom & loved it! TFS! Jeanne S.

crete...flower is a garage sale find...mosaic candleholder. Old barnwood...stem is recycled from patio umbrella...leaves cut from some shelf brackets.

sewandsew...I've still got a small stash of license plates & am going to try my hand at cutting sometime! Jeanne S.
