best manual push mower anyone?

I'm going to buy a human-powered mower shortly and am debating between Scotts sturdier new 18" and the Great Lakes version. http://www.cleanairgardening.com/scotclasreel.html

I have a very small yard. I don't want to mess with gas etc. And I would hugely appreciate feedback. I want the best. I hate buying junk.

Most of us here are not interested in pushing a reel mower around our usually large lawns. That said--i was in our local large old-time hardware store recently, and they had one reel mower there, which looked like a good model to buy and use. I don't think there are very many types of reel mowers out there just yet, although that could change, if our esteemed law-makers decide us citizens have too much ready cash to buy gasoline for powered rotary mowers!
One problem with reel type mowers--the guys who could sharpen and adjust them have mostly gone to the great lawns in the sky, and a lot of their machinery has been dropped on offending foreign countries, in the form of bombs, etc. We didn't give the Arabs the mowers and machinery, because they don't grow grass there, so no need for reel mowers, or any other kind, although, they do have one very efficient type of mower. It is called a goat, or sheep. Very efficient, and no problem when they no longer eat the grass-the owner eats the mower!
That said, have you investigated the electric rotary mowers? I have several here, one a Black & Decker, the other a Craftsman. They are light, easy to push, only hum as they mow, and you get exercise! And usually, you end up with a bunch of un-connectable short electric cords because you didn't pay attention to the job at hand.
So, investigate and decide on what type of exercise you want to indulge in. Me? I prefer to ride, and get 'er done quickly, then sit back with a brewski, and watch the guy next door as he pushes his old reel type mower, all the while monkeying with it to get a stick or dog bone out of the works!

That's pretty entertaining.
I did a ton of research and have ended up getting an American Lawn 1415. All metal gears etc. American Lawn apparently makes the models for Scotts etc. the 1414 and 1415 are still made in America and it is made well. I love it. My research paid off. I have a small lawn and mowing is now a pleasure. Plus, to start her up, all I have to do is walk.

I purchased a JS40 from Lowes, and gave it a workout last weekend. Being that I mulch 90% of the time, I installed a Snapper Ninja mulching blade after reading that the standard JD blade bagged well but didn't mulch well. The blade tore through my lawn, whereas my Snapper 5hp HiVac would have stalled repeatedly. The swivel-wheel took a bit to get accustomed to, and performed well on the flats. When I tackled the hill, locking the left wheel aided in keeping the mower straight. Prolonged mowing of a hill can become tiresome as the mower tends to wander on hills with only one wheel locked in the straight position. I switched out to the bagging option, and gave my yard a finish cut. The mower performed well with the Ninja blade and the rear bagging accessory. Good suction of grass clippings and dried mulch from previous cuts. Two items stand out in my mind that are inconveniences - adjusting the wheel height was a PITA, I'm sure with time, the spring steel will permit easier adjustments. And the spring loaded hinged cover over the discharge chute is a PITA when reattaching the bag. I'm sure the cover can be removed to resemble a Snapper. All in all, the JS40 performed to my expectations for a $450 mower. As for Lowes warranty, I've never needed to use them for warranty service, however I did opt for the 4 year extended warranty through John Deere. Time will tell....

Honda may have good engines, but the plastic decks on their more expensive consumer line would be a deal breaker for me. I would much rather buy an aluminum deck Toro or Lawnboy or a steel deck Snapper. I use to work for Honda as an internal auditor and audited Honda Power Equipments plant in Swepsonville, North Carolina. The plant management told me Honda made the switch from aluminum to plastic to cut costs. I got a Honda Harmony mower for my brother at a company discount. Even though he only uses this mower sparingly as a trim mower and is careful with his equipment, the deck cracked. To top it off Honda delivered this mower without an air filter element and my brother did not catch their mistake until he was doing preventative maintenance, approximately one year after taking delivery. A neighbor bought a plastic deck Honda Harmony a few years ago and did not like its maneuverability and lack of mulching power and gave it to his mother. He bought a much cheaper Troy Built and likes it much better. The Lawnboy Insight Platinum, the Toro Super Recycler, or the Snapper HI-VAC would be better choices than the plastic deck Honda mowers and the Toro and Lawnboy are significantly less expensive. I would choose the Toro if you primarily mulch and the Lawnboy or Snapper if you primarily bag.

What you need is Toro Personal Pace. It is capable of unbelievable top speed but also goes infinitely slow - it simply follows your speed. The technical explanation of how it does this is tedious, but because the belt is always slipping, the gear ratio has to be high to provide adequate drive at the usual mowing pace - if you were to use two hands, one on the fixed crossbar and one on the sliding handle to squeeze it all the way down, you would be looking at about 10 MPH. This condition would never be encountered using the mower at a normal pace or even a fast pace. I mention it only to illustrate the speed potential of the system. There is no way you can out-pace this system.

I used to use a push reel mower. Here are some of my thoughts. -one comes to a sudden and jarring stop at every pine cone and some small twigs -they are light so really aren't much harder to push than a regular gas push mower -one does not take over untamed areas with a push reel mower -flat blade grass gets cut the best. feathery or round blade grass doesn't cut so well. -a string trimmer can help with small patches of disgreeable grass -I had an 18 inch cut. I believe a 20 inch cut is now available. get the widest you can find. You might also consider an electric mower. Without too many obstacles even a corded electric might do the job.
