Replacing impact sprinklers

Sorry if this info is somewhere, I searched with no luck.

I'm trying to find an adapter to help me lower the connection point to my replacement sprinklers. I currently have 2 1/2 inch sprayers and side mount old fashioned impact rotors. I want to mow at a higher height, and want to replace these with 4" pop up sprayers and gear rotors. I have to dig 6+ feet back to lower the line in order to bottom mount it to the new sprinklers. Is there a trick or adapter to help me lower the water line height easily?

I'm not familiar with your type system but most PVC systems built today use "funny pipe at each sprinkler connection. This is basically a rubber tube running from the main pipe connected to the pvc using 3/4 or 1/2 inch nipples with the flexible tube between the water line and sprinkler. If your system connects the sprinklers directly to the water line disconnect the sprinkler and replace with the correct size nipples & funny tube for your pipe and sprinkler junctions. Then simply bury the sprinkler head. The tube and nipples are available at any store selling irrigation supplies.

It's not funny pipe. At least from what I remember of funny pipe at Lowes. It's thicker and much less flexible. I was hoping for a plastic S shaped piece that could add the depth and connect to the bottom of the sprinkler. Does that exist?

Is funny pipe succeptible to kinking when bent in a S kind of shape?

Hello again I guess as the homeowner, the lumber yards and distributors are not too interested in dealing with me- I guess they don't realize I am paying the bill!! The GC will install what I buy. I haven't received any quotes yet on PGT! I just called another distributor, he also sells Andersen. He told me that vinyl clad wood is better than solid vinyl. He is suggesting Andersen 400 series. Said it is a more solid window than PGT and Simonton. I thought wood clad was not a good option for the cost. What are your thoughts? Thank you,

The lack of underlayment has little if anything to do with the high degree of sound transfer between units. The purpose of it is to reduce squeaks not occupant noise transfer. The more effective way to reduce the sound transfer is to remove the ceiling below, fill the cavity with fiberglas or rock wool insulation and install one or two layers of drywall on new resilient channels. Removing or encasing recessed lights would help quite a bit too. They are probably not rated for contact with insulation anyway. Adding a thin resilient underlayment under a new wood floor in your unit would help a bit with foot fall noise but so would carpet and it would not help much with voices. This is an issue someone should have already solved. Where I live there is a minimum sound transmission coefficient required between apartments so the original owner would have taken care of the issue. Out of curiosity I would look at the original drawings at the local building department. You might not find that as interesting as I would. Its not a good sign that your neighbor hasn't asked the condo association or a professional for a solution before talking to you. If he/she thinks you are responsible for the construction of the floor/ceiling assembly you might have to offer to pay for half of the cost of the new ceiling since it would also reduce the sound transfer to your apartment from below. Perhaps insulation could be blown in through ceiling holes from below and a second layer of drywall on resilient channels installed over the original drywall. Recessed lights should be properly removed by an electrician and the holes covered.

Disagree with above comments. Impact windows add a lot of value to homes in SW florida for resale purposes. But you want to make sure you replace all of them -- not just some -- so that buyers can be assured that they will get the insurance discount. We were in a house in coral gables in the italian historic village (near CG high -- i'm assuming near your house), and without impact windows, our hurricane insurance was $17,000 a year. It went down to $10,000 with all impact windows. This is a question that EVERYONE asks about when you go to sell your house. Impact windows and date of roof. It's HUGE for resale purposes. I'd also argue that houses in historic areas in Coral gables and the grove are actually considered more aesthetically pleasing *with* the impact windows. It's considered a marker of a house that has been fully renovated. This is different than, say, washington DC (where i also lived) where aluminum new windows from the 90s are considered the sign of a cheaply done flip 20 years ago. Conversely, the thick border that is a give away of impact windows in florida is a sign of a good renovation. I have never heard of anyone in SW florida being particularly concerned with maintaining the historic elements of the old houses. They like the appearance of the old houses, but want the updates of new houses. This is also different than DC, where people tried to maintain the old features.

Funny pipe works just fine, length will determine if you get kinks. The funny pipe doesn't need the "s" shape because of the two nipples, it's pretty much a straight line. If you just gotta, and I'm assuming you have one inch PVC, simply use two 90 degree elbows with a spacer of your choice for the depth. Then add a threaded coupler on the open elbow to match your sprinkler opening. Cost including glue and cutter if you dont already have them, under $8 dollars. The disadvantage of doing it this way is a direct strike on the sprinkler head might cause a leak whereas the flex tube has a bit more give. Easy fix either way, good luck.

To those of you out there with the same problem, I was able to piece together (at Lowe's), using 3/4 fittings, an S shape with an extra 90deg elbow on the end to go back verticle from the end of the S into the rotor bottom. Now I have a plastic only connection, which I prefer for some reason vs. trying to dig 6' back to lower the entire supply line, or trying to bend funny pipe, or putting small funny pipe pieces in the middle of a few less plastic elbows. I'll try this out this weekend, but I like how I can buy a 75cent piece and change the relative height difference.

Again, I'm replacing impacts with rotors and 2 1/2 inch height impacts with 4 inch rotors with a supply line not buried deep enough.
