Dave Wilson's best varieties or other ones too.
Comments (23)I have a Minnie Royal/ Royal Lee pair in a raised bed that went in earlier this year. Fingers crossed. There is actually a commercial variety of low chill cherries that I would LOVE to get my hands on but they sell only to commercial growers. They are known as the "little darlings," Royal Edie and Royal Helen. They fruit later than Minnie/Lee. I have not tasted any of these myself. I'm hoping to have five or six raised beds with 4 in 1 hole. I'm still collecting the trees, but by January should have everything. 4 "Royal" low chill cherries (Minnie/Lee, Edie/Helen) 4 Interspecifics, most likely: Flavor King Pluot Flavor Grenade Pluot Emerald Drop Plu-ot Bella Gold Pea-cot-um A single Weeping Santa Rosa 4 Plums and friends: Sweet Treat Plu-erry Burgandy, Mariposa & Catalina Plum 4 Nectarines and friends: Spice Zee Necta-plum Snow Queen, Panamint, and Double Delight Nectarines 4 Peaches Considering Sugar Giant, OHenry Mid Pride Eva's Pride (Any input here?) Maybe a avacado hole... Maybe an apricot /aprium hole......See MoreReport on Flavor Finale pluot
Comments (0)This is my first harvest of Flavor Finale on second leaf trees in my greenhouse. They set a good crop, not nearly as much set as Flavor Grenade but more than Flavor Treat my latest pluot. The fruit size is up to 2.75 inches long by 2.65 wide with a slight point on the tip, that's really big for a pluot/plum. Exterior color is a dark purple. The flesh is reddish near the skin and amber near the pit. Not freestone. Taste is very sweet with excellent flavor. There is a crunchiness near the skin but also quite juicy. This is the sweetest pluot/plum of the year and my overall favorite. The only fruit overall this yr that might have been better was Arctic Star nectarine and they were sensational, incredibly sweet. I had my best ever Flavor King pluots this yr. Some have compared the flavor of Flavor Finale to Flavor King. While Flavor King is more aromatic, to my taste and as grown in my greenhouse, I much prefer Flavor Finale. I don't think they taste anything alike. Finale is more of a traditional plum taste to me. My congradulations to Zaiger and Dave Wilson. All of the recently released fruit I've tried has been great. My favorite new release from last yr was Geo Pride pluot. Some people say plums are as good as the pluots. I don't agree at all. I've been cutting back all my plums and letting the pluots fill in the space for several yrs now. I still have about 8 plums. None compare to the best pluots. The Fruitnut...See MoreApple Report 2013
Comments (45)I didn't get too many apples this year but heres a report on a few. I over-crammed varieties, I have rows with about a foot per variety. Don't do dat! I'm growing too much wood and not enough apple. Akane - Its getting spot rot as usual, this guy I don't have time to deal with. It also is unproductive in my climate. Its an excellent tasting apple but time to go. Cherryville Black - This is an excellent early apple but squirrels got all the ripe ones this year. Pitmaston Pineapple - Excellent! Flesh is a bit on the dry side but not too bad. Flavor is great. Now I remember why I consider it the best yellow school apple, it beats out Roxbury, Orleans, Cloche, Clochard, etc. If it were bigger everyone would be growing it. Blenheim Orange - This is a great eating apple not just a great cooker. Quality varied in terms of amount of flavor but most were good. Tree has been extremely reliable and productive. Pomme Raisin - Decent but nothing special, an average tart cooking type apple. A member of the McIntosh school. Remove. Sierra Beauty - One fruit and it was heavily water cored and bland. seems not worth the space; remove. Burford also not positive on this one in VA. My Jewel - Very average. Another bust on California apple varieties in my climate. Tumanga - Early ones are very good, somewhat in the Newtown school. They should age well I expect. Ribston - excellent taste; had heavy watercore this year. Also rot damage. Probably time to remove this variety, it tastes great but is not up to the heat. Rubinette - This apple continues to rise in my eyes, it knocks your socks off with flavor. Any other apple is bland in comparison. Probably in my top three now, and may go higher. Bonne Hotture - They have an interesting, unusual, rich flavor. Reinette du Mans - Sort of similar to Blenheim, likely triploid large apple with that creamy taste. Quite sweet and not sour so potential as a sweet for cider. Goes mealy fast. Wickson - Hornets really took care of them. These guys are more like grapes in terms of sweet/sour: lots of both. Great for cider and probably good for other uses; not really for fresh eating, they split and look ugly. Hubbardston Nonesuch - similar to Abbondanza, even has similar pink color and striping. A very good apple with a mild aromatic flavor. Low on sugar though. Myers Royal Limbertwig - the usual stuff, a classic American apple type with a more interesting flavor than the other classic red American apples. Fair amount of stinkbugs. Super reliable every year with a large crop; sizes unevenly which limits commercial potential. GoldRush - Few apples this year due to overbearing last year. Excellent as usual....See MoreRaspberry report fall 2014
Comments (9)Caroline and Anne Fall crops culled early due to fruit flies (probably SWD). These Fall crops rarely produce much due to pest pressure and hot temperatures during ripening. I love the flavor of both varieties but both are low producers in the Spring and the Fall crop is generally a failure. IâÂÂm going to do some hard thinking about replacing one or both of these raspberries with an early summer bearing raspberry. I purchased a small amount of Tulameen rootstock earlier in the summer as a test and now have 5 decent sized plants that I may use as replacements although Tulameen isnâÂÂt early and is also highly susceptible to root rot. Prelude would make a better choice but havenâÂÂt decided yet on what to do. Double Gold is flowering and has a few small berries but there are very few berries. Although I have a small planting, I may pull it too. IâÂÂm just in that kind of mood... One of my primary raspberry post-harvest goals is to improve the soil in my raspberry beds. My efforts have been lacking there. IâÂÂm using some grass clippings as a start and may get a load or two of horse manure from one of the local horse farms. If I decide to replace Anne and Caroline, I may retill the beds and amend heavily with a better organic mix. I used too much clay when I was refilling the beds originally, which has slowed their growth and lowered their vigor....See Morerayrose
