Project gremlins, or...

Reading the "ouch" posting by Sandylady made me think of a gremlin event (or tongue on the frozen flagpole moment).

I was screening my front porch and rather than make an extra trip to get the third 2X4, I decided to carry three at a time, Of course, just when I was going by the picture window, one of the boards spun and went right through the $1100 window. I said bad words, then remembered the wisdom of an old coaching friend who always told his players "It's OK to make a mistake as long as you learn from it".

I am sure that we all have had times like this.

The worst thing I did, was set a piece of 24x36 glass just bought for a window pane, on the hood of the car. Bill asked me to move the car, and I forgot that the glass was there and 'moved the car'.....CRASH!

My Mother is to blame for my biggest oops. I had injured my back at work and was recouperating at home, when I decided to finish the painting on the outside of the house. My DM came over to make sure I didn't climb the ladder (I was 36 at this time) and she told me she would use the ladder, that I needed to stay on the ground. Ok, I was fine with that, until she decided to move the ladder.................. and let it fall right on my head! This was a 20 ft. extension ladder, too. Needless to say, I saw stars, etc., but I hid it from her, so to this day she still doesn't know about it. I had her put the ladder away, and finished it another time and I make sure anytime a ladder is in use to make sure the field is clear before moving it.

Hmmm, I suspect a bit of procrastination is evident here; either in putting off the project, or putting off learning how to care for the plants. Neither your teacher nor Nature is going to like that - the teacher may flunk you, but as you are finding out, Nature is less forgiving and gets rid of failures whether it's the plant's fault or not. Meanawhile, you have a problem because A) it takes time for noticeable differences in growth/coloring to be apparent to the casual eye and B) most houseplants are sturdy enough to tolerate mistreatment such as soil variation for literally months before you can see a difference (or else they are so tender that death will take place due to wrong temperatures, poor light conditions, or improper moisture long before they can react to different sorts of soil). See if your teacher will accept a report on how soil variances affect the seed sprouting and young growth. Lettuce will sprout quickly and grow rapidly -- and the seed should be available at your local stores; I'd suggest using a leaf lettuce such as Black-seeded Simpson. Get all your samples of soil (and label them when you get them), and let them get up to room temperature. Buy a pack of 1-oz paper cups and label 6 cups to match each soil label. use a pin to poke a hole in the bottom of each cup. Be sure the soil is moist but not wet -- stick your finger in: if you feel dampness that's good; mud is bad; dry as dust is very bad. Fill each little cup with the matching soil and tap the top with one finger [you'll probably tap the soil down and need to add more]; then put 2 or 3 seeds on top of the soil. Now sprinkle more soil to cover the seeds - this is a guessing game... just guess how much will put another 1/8" soil over the seeds. Next each pot should be sprinkled with enough water to dampen the top of the soil -- fill a clean windex bottle with warm water and mist! Now put the pots on a tray or paper plate, cover the whole plate with a transparent cling wrap, and put it onto the top of your water heater or a similar place where they can be warm but not cooked. A sunny windowsill is good -- if the sill itself is warm: put your hand on the sill for a couple minutes to feel the temperature: if your fingers get cold, any seeds will shiver instead of sprouting. Prepare your report form now: describe the soil types; note the date seeds were planted. Every day you will need to check the soil to be sure the soil's surface is moist (carefully - don't poke the seeds). In about a week, the seeds should start sprouting: remove the cling wrap (it helps keep the seeds moist but it will hurt the sprouts) and then note when each seedling came up; what color the leaves are, and use a ruler to measure how much growth occurred since the previous day. The seedlings will need sunshine (and at this time of year, several hours of additional light from a lamp) in order to grow. Every day or two, you will need to water very deeply - that means get the soil really wet! or else the sprouts will flop over and die of thirst. Within 2 weeks you should have enough information to determine how much, if any, difference was apparent between the plants. If you study up a bit, you might be able to determine whether the difference was caused by soil type (clay, sandy) or by nutrients (was one soil more loamy than another). Oh, and if you want, - after you write your report - you can make a salad out of the subject. Good luck, and let us know what happens.

Well, good! I don't have a scanner yet--nor have I gotten hold of a digital camera--but I DO have a rough drawing that the contractor e-mailed me as a J-PEG. If I e-mailed it as an attachment would one of you computer whizzes know how to reduce the file size so it could be seen here? It's a pretty big file... Spectre--please cut and paste those instructions--and e-mail me instructions if you know how to reduce file size of pics. I don't have a web page--so I won't be able to post pics IN TEXT HERE--but I will be able to put them in hte gallery. This could be fun--but don't get too attached to the handicap ramp--the project came in at $45,000--and with a kid in University I can't quite handle that--that's two years tuition! This wasn't going to be a typical wooden ramp--it was to be an integral part of the front "patio"--rising up in a gradual grade to the driveway--and paved with the same material as the patio. A majority of hte cost of this project (over 50%) is the replacement of an INTACT brick retaining wall to accomodate the new ramp...I'll have to get hold of a camera this weekend. If I thought the cracked retaining wall would make it another seven years I'd just hold off on that part of the project and deal ONLY with the steps, the drainage, and turning the nasty white rock into a patio--I've got my contractor coming back next week--perhaps he'l come up with a way to stabilize the wall so that I won't HAVE to redo that part in 7.5 years when BOTH kids are through college and I can afford to do the ramp... I would go for house 1, being able to walk to places is such a plus for me. Where we are now I can walk to the library in about 30 min (40 if the dog gets to sniff and pee on everything). It's another 10 min to get coffee and a donut (since I walked all that way) and too often our dog just isn't up for it. I wish we were a little closer to everything, about 1 mile closer and I'd walk for coffee every Saturday and Sunday. When I was in my 20's I wanted to live on acreage away from everything. Now that I'm in my 40's I like being near people and things. I love sitting on the porch for an hour and seeing 4 or more people/couples walking their dogs, kids, or just themselves. I don't know why, either :) Also, I would get more use out of a bigger garage than a guest house :). I have more toys and tools than out of town guests, and a separate structure is another thing to maintain. Bear in mind that I'm also anti-vacation-home (for us, not for everyone else). And a view is something you enjoy all the time. We aren't even on a hill and we have a view of woods and distant farmland off our back deck. There is something restful and enriching about a view you like (or love). So I would buy house number 1.

I ended up using the Amazon Cloud Cam suggested above. It works almost perfectly for my needs. My only complaint is I have 1 camera which is occasionally very touchy about not being able to re-establish a wifi connection if the power gets interrupted. The other cameras never have any issues rejoining wifi, but 1 particular camera can only automatically rejoin as it is supposed to about 50% of the time. Of course this started about 1 week after the warranty was up. Ha. Because isn't that the way life always works! So I have that camera located in the least important location for now, and I'll probably replace it at some point. (Yes, I've rebooted it. It just seems to have connection gremlins that can't be resolved.) Other than that, I've been very pleased. There are about a million options out there, and what works well for one person may not meet your particular needs though, so you'll still have to do some researching.

'Morning Big Brother!
Sorry to hear about the 2 x 4 mishap- OUCH is right! That's one big window you had to replace. It's always the Impatience Gremlin that trips me up. I'm in too big a hurry and do something stupid. (I've got a major owie on my pinky from snagging it on a rough edge while grouting my chair... rushing to get it done... just can't wait...)

Ooooooooooooooh, Out of carelessness and rush I cut my hand on the porch table when I was ready to adhere the top, and that was BEFORE I began the all-day work-a-thon on Mother's d.r. Bandaged and back braced, I didn't let on, but promised on the next trip between Thanksgiving and Christmas to grout the table to cover the sharp edges of the leaves. UNCLBUZ - if that was safety glass, did you save the pieces for mosaics??? I broke a sliding glass patio door once and tossed those beautiful rectangular/square pieces into the trash. How I wish I had them back now.

Well, this isn't as expensive as some of yours, but I bought a brand new mailbox, set it in the driveway while I went to get tools. In the meantime, I decided to move the car -- when I heard the crunch, I knew I had just smashed the new mailbox! Oh, my! Dumb me!

When I was a kid... about 13. My dad would let me move the cars when I was washing them, so I loved to wash the cars. I thought I was in drive, and instead I was in reverse......I ran over the vacume, and backed into someones car! I didn't get to
drive again till I was 16.

Not related to any projects....My dh put the vacation storage box on top of my SUV and left it there. I rarely drive with the box on. It was raining and my then 1, 2, and 4 yo's were sleeping in their car seats. I decided to park in the garage. Yep, I drove the box into the top of the garage and cracked the plastic. The garage was ok except for scraped paint. We fixed the box with ABS resin and it is usuable, but it isn't pretty and now has no resale value.

Gosh. You just reminded me of the numerous times I've placed a nice cup of coffee on the top of the car to place things inside the car before I go somewhere, only to forget that wonderful coffee and drive away with it sliding off the roof of the car. Done that too, too many times!!

THen there was the home decorating project that my husband and I decided to tackle, got nearly done, then I fell off the ladder, broke my leg, sprained my ankle and fractured my wrist....time in the hospital in traction. Much $$ and pain later it occurs to me that it would have been MUCH cheaper to hire the job out......

But whats the fun of that?
