Trying to find a used lawn mower for around $200

Trying to find a used lawn mower in the NW Ohio / SE Michigan area. Don't know much about mowers other than Honda engines are good. Can anyone record me some specific models I should be looking for and also how to tell what is a good deal and what isn't?

Honda has the inexpensive GC series engine that is offered on some of the department store push mower equipment. This model is well know for easy starting.

Honda also offers the GX series on more expensive push mower equipment. This engine does everything well.

The Briggs Quantum series engine is the most common push mower engine. This is a good engine, but usually requires more servicing than the Honda's. Starting is usually easy, but probably not as good as the Honda. Parts are cheap.

A five year old department store mower with the Briggs or Honda GC would probably sell for $50 - $75. I suspect any mower with a Chinese engine would sell for less.

The better mowers would have a cast aluminum deck with rear drive. On example is the Toro Super recycler. The Snapper hiVac is a steel deck, but nevertheless, a great mower. My guess is these would sell for $200.

Hi....I have a JD 14SB that I'd sell to you for $200 but you would have to cover the shipping costs.Here out here in Alberta Canada this mower sells for $400-$500.
This mower has: 5 speed rear drive,blade clutch,bagger,Kawasaki engine.
The mower runs great and is better than anything Deere sells today.

Yes, you will have to leave the granulated products out. Study carefully which products can be used as post-emergent sprays for both broad leaf and grassy weeds.....on your kind of grass. There are some techniques that you can employ to encourage infiltration of water at the top of a slope, but I would still avoid pre-emergent (weed and feed products are horrible!) herbicides or anything that needs to be absorbed through the soil. Post-emergent products should be misted on the foliage, never drenched into the soil.

I don't have three acres but a 3 year old home on 3/4 acres. I have an older JD-LT155 with a 38" mower deck. It has no problems with the slopes, in fact it surprised me when it was able to climb out of the ditch in the front yard. While there are many solutions to the mowing problem, there are other uses for a tractor. I would recommend a tractor either one like the LT-155, or one of the heavier ones. With three acres and your desire to make additional planting, you will appreciated the tractor with a trailer to move all of the tools, plants, seeds, mulch, fertilizer, and things yet to be discovered that those flower beds and new trees will need. Right now I am looking at putting a water tank in the trailer to water those new remote plantings. If you can afford two I would get a tractor and the zero turn.

Metal. You don't own this lawn. This is a lawn party that anyone can attend. I certainly did not say that owning a tractor without a RIO makes you comparable to a drunk driver who kills people. Check my post again and see if you can find that statement. As for taking the tags off mattress's and pillow's, that law stops when the end-user buys the product. It is there to protect the end-user from receiving product that does not contain virgin material. Your analogy with the C10 you own is totally off the mark. The issue here has to do with people on this forum telling other members that defeating/disconnecting safety devices is perfectly OK and then giving lessons on how to go about it. And I as I said earlier, if you think that the current RIO configuration does more harm than good, then invent something better, patent it and then licence it to the manufacturers. But if you're unable to come up with a better idea, then why not stop telling others how to disconnect them? What is being served by doing so? It does not matter that your tractor is not equipped with a RIO from the factory. I own 15 tractors that are also not equipped with one but I wouldn't help disable someone's tractor that came with one. What also doesn't matter is YOUR personal opinion about the effectiveness of RIO's. Your opinion is not shared by the people who wrote the law that mandates RIO's. If and when statistics show that the RIO law isn't working, then the legislators will come up with something different. Keep in mind that the legislators themselves didn't design the RIO's. They went to the industry and told them that the statistics showed far too many people (including children) were being run over by lawn/garden tractors when the operator put them into reverse. They then told the manufacturer's to come up with a solution to fix this problem on their own because it is in the best interests of the industry to collectively solve this problem. Every time someone is injured, it costs money to try and undo that injury. Whenever someone sues as a result of an injury, someone pays. More often than not, it is the various insurance companies that end up paying. Now, I hate insurance companies as much as the next guy but the fact remains that insurance companies have to make a profit just like any other company, to stay in business. If they have to constantly pay out money as a result of injuries and lawsuits, then those losses are reflected in the premiums everyone pays. And if someone is injured or killed, then who knows what sort of loss society as a whole may incur as a result? There's a much bigger picture here than just the one that shows your lawn.

This is the kind of mower Denny has...only our is gray...I think gray was the color the year we got ours...I don't know..but this one looks the most like ours out of pics of Dixons. I have a self propeled Lawnboy (I think that's what it is...It is the green one)to do up around the house and the bushes and flowers. Joan..Denny uses one of those Hustlers mowers at the park. It doesn't get the park done that quick..But he has a lot of trees to go around....a lot Our Dixon sure cut the time in more than a half from the riding mower...I think that zery turn radius is what helps. Plus you can really get going on that machine. patti

I'll toss my two cents in.

I bought a nice old light-weight push mower for $25. It had a B&S 3.75 engine which runs strong. The primer bulb leaks a bit, no surprise at that age. I have to push the bulb ten times instead of a couple. I took down the numbers so I can order a new one.

This thing is way more fun to use than the heavier Toro and Craftsman I also have. But it only has side discharge. The Toro and Craftsman also have rear bagging and a mulching option.

If you are looking at a strangers mower, put your hand on the engine to see if it is warm before you start it. What you would like to see is a engine that starts quickly for you, but has not been run recently. A wise seller will make sure the mower runs a few hours before you come to inspect it.

If you don't want any frills, you can buy a new basic mower for that much. The John Deere posted above would be a great one. I don't know about the shipping because new regulations prohibit the shipping of anything that has been fueled. It may be possible to state the contents of the box as 'refurbished mower, no fuel/oil', but the seller would have to be diligent in running the mower dry of fuel, removing the oil and flushing the gas tank with alcohol or dry-cleaning solvent and letting it dry out before boxing. Shipping is expensive, probably $50 or more. That is a premium aluminum-deck mower and would be worth it IMO.
Alternatively, you can get a 20" Lawn-Boy at Home Depot or Lowe's with self-propel rear drive, a grass bag and a B&S OHV engine for $269. This is one of the best buys out there esp. for smaller yards.

There are some great new mowers out there for under $300 but you gotta do your research and know what you want or need for features.Just take things slow and explore all of your options.
