Safe lawn weed killer to use around a garden.

I've got a lawn thats on a slope and my garden is on the downhill side. The problem is that under my lawn is a layer of clay dirt that acts as hardpan and when I water the hill, the water flows just under the surface, and down through my garden.

I just re-seeded my lawn and the grass is growing great, but so are the weeds. I'm trying to find a weed killer or weed/feed that I can use that won't wash down into my garden and make it barren for years to come.

Maybe something that one would apply topically that would kill the weeds that the killer contacted, but not kill the grass, but also not persist in the soil systemically?

Yes, you will have to leave the granulated products out. Study carefully which products can be used as post-emergent sprays for both broad leaf and grassy weeds.....on your kind of grass.

There are some techniques that you can employ to encourage infiltration of water at the top of a slope, but I would still avoid pre-emergent (weed and feed products are horrible!) herbicides or anything that needs to be absorbed through the soil.

Post-emergent products should be misted on the foliage, never drenched into the soil.

You may use Specracide weed stop fo0r lawn. The company claims it kills 200 kind of weed without harming the grass

I have Floratam - mid Florida. My initial Spring shot at the weeds is with Scotts Bonus S. - my first appplication of fertilizer. Later I use "Image for St. Augustine Grass and Centipedegrass with Atrazine." It requires several days for the weeds to go away but it has been pretty effective. Some weeds like Dollarweed do not completely go away but the Image helps to control it. Big box stores such as Home Depot have it. You should read the label - open up the sticky thing on the back to get to see all of it.

Some selective herbicides are definitely more toxic then others. You can see on the label if it says "caution" then it's a lower grade of weed killer. If it says "Danger" then that's the highest level of toxicity. Most herbicides are washed off after watering or rain and become of no effect. If there was a way to (1) spray the weeds with a low toxicity selective herbicide, then (2), keep the dogs off of the lawn for a couple days, allowing the weed killer to work, then (3) water the lawn thoroughly, you should be good.

They may be worth a try for those who would like to try an alternative to harsh poisons on their lawns...Just passing them on for ideas..Of course, too much baking soda wouldn't be very good in one place for the soil..although it is a fairly harmless substance in small quantities...since we eat it in our food., According to Dr. Elaine Ingham, crabgrass can't tolerate calcium, so mixing egg shells into your soil should help to eliminate it.

The best weedkiller is at the end of your wrist :)) Manually removing the weeds is the most thorough and least environmentally impacting method there is. Just be careful not to disrupt the soil excessively around the root zone of the tree. JM's have a quite delicate and shallow root system that resents disturbance.
