What makes a lawnmower run erratically?

Hi, I hope somebody out there with a bit more expertise than myself can answer this question...

What makes a lawnmower engine run erratically?

I recently bought a brand-new Troy-Bilt push mower with a 160cc Honda engine and a rope start. [Model: 11A-542Q711 from Lowes]

For the most part it runs fine, but from time to time the engine becomes erratic, as though it's racing - before dying altogether. After this, it's pretty much impossible to start for the next 10 mins and then can only be started with great difficulty. I did wonder whether this is because I am just using ordinary 87 octane gas - the same that I put in my car. Do small lawnmower engines work better with higher octane fuels? Or can anyone think of any other likely causes for this problem? I know that the fuel is not contaminated - new fuel bought very recently and stored in a new, clean gas can.

Thanks for your help!
