If you can successfully graft pecan, persimmon will be a walk in the park. Simple bark graft works fine - and is what I do - but I've also done just simple whip grafts with 100% success. Aftercare is the most critical part of the deal - persimmon is adamant about pushing growth below the graft, and it's imperative to check - almost daily - and rub off any rootstock shoots as soon as they appear. They do need some heat to callus in, so I do all my persimmon grafts after the rootstock is pushing vigorous growth, and the bark is slipping well. Not sure about when to harvest scionwood in CA - I cut mine in Feb/early March here in KY. cuznfloyd makes a good point about hardiness - some of the Asian persimmons that work well in CA may not be sufficiently winter-hardy, but...nothing ventured, nothing gained. Astringent types appear to be generally more cold-hardy than the non-astringents.

Cliff thought his Shin had completely snapped below the graft union because the fruits he was getting from his snow damaged mother tree were astringent. After consulting with me, he decided to change his idea about Shin being non-astringent. Really, if he was getting fruit from the rootstock what are the odds they'd even be edible? What I had was extremely precocious which should be a pretty good indicator of variety. Why are you debating about the shape? To me they look more like Fuyu than the astringent varieties in stores. Maybe I just have no eye for shapes. Let's move on.

Though information is hard to come by for these things (and often contradictory), from what I've gathered, 100-46 is a descendant of Early Golden. I assume this means that it is better in some way, so I'd rather go with it. I'm pretty well settled on planting a Prok. It's the other tree that I haven't decided on yet. (I also have woods, and I've considered getting a cheap bundle of seedlings to toss in there too, but I know that wouldn't bear fruit for a good decade, and I'm not sure I actually want to make my fruit seeded.)

Ampersand It takes about 7 years for the F1 cross to fruits and each back cross takes another 7 years and the process continue.... It is very time consuming process to breed a hybrid. The creator of Rossyanka and Nikita's Gift from Ukraine died and took all the secret with him and we don't even know which varietites he used in the process. Rt now most breeder used his male Rossyanka to cross with other Kakis and back cross to American persimmon. Tony
