can I fix it before husband finds out?

I hit a brick and broke it into 3 or 4 pieces. The machine still mows and runs but makes a terrible noise - I took a quick look at the blade, it is bent on one end.

We had it serviced at the beginning of the year - I think it is a self-propelled Sears something - that is all I know.

Is your husband abusive? Why is it a big deal if he finds out? If it is only the blade it can easily be changed, if you bent the shaft, you may be ahead money wise with a new mower (depending on age of mower, original cost, etc.). It's not like a goldfish, where you could go get a new one and flush the old one before he finds out : )

If you can identify which side of the engine the air cleaner/carburetor is on, flip the mower on it's side with that side up. Now see if you can find a box end wrench or socket to fit the nut that holds the blade on. If you can get that blade off, buy a matching replacement, and put it on, you'll soon know whether the damage is limited to the blade. If it is, you're all good. If not, as metal says above, it might be time for a new mower. Good luck.

Okay Marilyn, this is the 'possum story. On New Year's morning, about 1 am, we woke up cold. My husband got up to see why, and the back door had blown open (in Texas even locked doors can blow open with our gentle breezes). He shut it and was heading back to bed when he glimpsed movement toward the study. Thinking it was the cat, he kept going to the bed, where our cat was sleeping on the quilt (a watchcat, she isn't). He checked, and there was a full grown possum wandering around the study (looking for something to read?). He started shooing the possum back to the door (shut) and trying to get the door open and the possum convinced to leave. He finally set up a slalom course with chairs to guide the possum out. When he came back to bed, I asked him what happened and he told me. Half asleep, I replied, "Well, thank heavens it wasn't a skunk." He couldn't get back to sleep for quite a while. Your husband would love Texas!

Only you can answer that question. Is it going to bug you for years if you don't fix it? Some people just like to know that things are perfect, regardless of whether the flaws are visible or not. My husband would have to fix the wall, I would be quite content to leave as is.

Pumpkins don't harden. They will rot. You could try crossing a pumpkin with a gourd. You might get something that looks like a pumpkin and has the hard shell of a gourd.

Not even remotely the same thing. It’s like the doctor nicking an artery during routine surgery, stitching it, and not telling me it happened or what I need to be aware of for recovery. This actually proves the point. What if I told you that surgeons nick arteries all the time, it isn't even considered a mistake? You are assuming that because things didn't go as you envision they should, that things went wrong, and that you need to be aware of it for recovery. Your anatomy doesn't actually match the textbook, inside your body things are all over the place. A surgeon may start a procedure by mapping your arteries, but it isn't uncommon to nick something that isn't where they thought it would be. Yes, I agree you should be told, but your assumption that it was a mistake, because you don't have perspective, is the case for not being told. Furthermore, in this situation, he risks nothing. You will not win this case, and he doesn't care about your online reviews. If either of those things change, and there are ambulance chasers trying to change it, then I strongly suspect the number of times it is mentioned in post-op will go down.

Before you do that make sure you disconnect the spark plug wire !
You will have to wedge a block of wood between the blade and deck to keep it from turning on you.
After removing the blade, take to Sears (if it is a sears model) and they will help you pick out another. You can also buy a blade at Home Depot.

Listen to Skip, remove plug wire, remove and replace blade. If the mower still shakes you have a bend shaft and cost wise it is cheaper to replace the mower. Get him a good model and make him happy...

Well, being this is a Sears mower we know the hubby is not a mower freak who gets upset when someone else using his mower. I would think he would be right happy the wife tried to help and mow the lawn.

Tell Him.
I would be more POed at my ole lady for not telling me than letting it go with who knows what type of damage done. For I would want to fix it correctly before putting it back into service. For you never know what can happen if not taken care properly.
