Proper aerating technique?

I live at the beach and have fairly sandy soil so I have no experience at areating. I need some advice.

There is a section of my Bermuda yard that is on a slope. No matter how much I water that spot it is browner than the rest of my yard which looks great right now. The sprinkler is at the top of the hill and aims downhill. I try to add additional water with a hose end sprinkler by watering from the bottom up. It helps some, but not like it should.

I think the soil in that area is compacted as I am starting to see some Goose Grass pop up. Lots of websites say Goose Grass likes compacted soil and I don't have it anywhere else in my yard.

I am borrowing a core aerator from a friend and will give it a try. Could aerating also help with the browning grass? Should I mow first, afterwards to dispurse the plugs, or let the plugs lie and get dispursed by irrigation? I also plan to do my monthly fertilization after aerating. That's good right?
