Toro 22035 TV5002 Commercial Push Mower. Self Propel Stopped!!

Hi guys,

I've had this mower since 1986 and it's a beast of burden--but after about a minute of mowing my grass today the self-propelled feature stopped working and now makes a noise when I engage it. Also, i can't even pull the mower in reverse (forward is OK) it seems to be frozen.

I also noticed the last couple times i've used it it would not turn off when I moved the lever to Stop (I had to move it to choke to turn off the engine). Not sure if these two issue are related.

I ended up moving the speed lever all the way to zero and then I was able manually push the mover forward and backward to get my lawn done.

Any ideas what the problem could be and how to fix it? Transmission? Belt?

This is a great mower so I'll do anything to get it going again--but I don't want to have to push it next week...

My guess is if it makes a noise when you are engaging the drive is that you have imput to the trans. So you need to verify that and that the output shaft is or isn't turning.

The early Toro commercials (22035 is the predecessor to the 22040) 3 speed trans lacked the ability to "freewheel" backward. Not sure when they changed the design to freewheel backward, but I've had both versions. Check the simplest first - take the belt cover off and check the belt for proper operation. Then pop the cover off the trans and watch what happens as you pull on the bail bar. The commercial 3 sp. trans looks very similar to the consumer recycler 3 sp. trans but has heavier duty internals, a grease zerk fitting on the top of its case and "HD" stamped on the bottom. The engine kill is a simple design, pulling the throttle all the way back touches the throttle linkage to a coil wire down on the engine and grounds out the ignition, killing the engine. Its easy to see where this linkage touches the wire down on the mower and adjust the linkage accordingly. The 22035/22040 was the best 21" propelled mower ever built IMO and its 2 stroke Suzuki is a pleasure to operate. Well worth repairing even if you need another trans. for it.

I thought the lawnboy line was dropped all together...? I had a Honda Harmony from a dealer the 1st or 2nd year it came out...nothing but issues with cables and the tranny...most covered under warranty. Again, it was NOT a HD model and was expensive for its time ($650 or so as I recall) Plus Side: road smoothly (cadilac like over grass) quiet not smokey very good mulcher Eventually I switched to a Toro Personal Pace from a dealer, again the first year they came out. They were a bit cheaper. Within a month they put a new shortblock on it...it was blowing blue smoke. They also had to replace something with a wheel under warranty. I have had no adjustment issues. It has a rather bumpy ride but also mulches quite well. It is also a lot lighter than the honda. I really like the feature where it goes as fast as you walk. Pulling it backwards takes some getting used to. It does not have the blade stop / engine idle the Harmony had. It seems smellier to me too...it does not hav an OHV engine--the honda did...not sure if that makes a difference. Both were easy to service each year. I would go with whichever brand has a DEALER who can service it for you if the need arises. I would avoid the HD models unless they are dirt cheap on clearance, they seem to be cheapie reproductions of the real thing...ie the Personal Pace has really cheap looking wheels and I believe a cheap deck...steel not aluminum. My Dad bought a second (backup) Honda from HD (to back up his dealer bought Harmony model---which I might add he has never had trouble with....go figure) The self propel mechanism or something went. He took it to the dealer who said the HD models were throw aways and that the tranny was not worth replacing...who knows. Try to by from your local dealer who can service it, maybe you can even pick up 2 quality used moweres for the price of a new one. Good luck.

I purchased a JS40 from Lowes, and gave it a workout last weekend. Being that I mulch 90% of the time, I installed a Snapper Ninja mulching blade after reading that the standard JD blade bagged well but didn't mulch well. The blade tore through my lawn, whereas my Snapper 5hp HiVac would have stalled repeatedly. The swivel-wheel took a bit to get accustomed to, and performed well on the flats. When I tackled the hill, locking the left wheel aided in keeping the mower straight. Prolonged mowing of a hill can become tiresome as the mower tends to wander on hills with only one wheel locked in the straight position. I switched out to the bagging option, and gave my yard a finish cut. The mower performed well with the Ninja blade and the rear bagging accessory. Good suction of grass clippings and dried mulch from previous cuts. Two items stand out in my mind that are inconveniences - adjusting the wheel height was a PITA, I'm sure with time, the spring steel will permit easier adjustments. And the spring loaded hinged cover over the discharge chute is a PITA when reattaching the bag. I'm sure the cover can be removed to resemble a Snapper. All in all, the JS40 performed to my expectations for a $450 mower. As for Lowes warranty, I've never needed to use them for warranty service, however I did opt for the 4 year extended warranty through John Deere. Time will tell....

I chose not to address all of the points mentioned, but I do appreciate your input and advice. I finally got to try the HRX with cruise control, not just pushing it around on the showroom floor, but actually cutting the grass. Very impressive and high quality mower. Initial impressions, my opinion only, your mileage may vary: not a fast or as quiet as I would like; it bogged down a few times when I didn't expect it to be struggling, blade/cruise control will take some getting used to and at first try I do not find it as intuitive as the personal pace. It does seem like a high quality machine and I really like the composite deck and the Versamow feature and some of the higher end features like large bb wheels and the mulching blades and I can see why it receives great reviews. For the speed issue, I am going to try the Honda HRS216PDA, the push version, steel deck. There is no max speed on a push mower. Haven't seen any aluminum deck push mowers. At 63 lbs, it's the lightest I have seen of the quality push mowers. The Lawnboy10640 looks good too, but it gives up an inch on the front wheels and the blade, and my bumpy and large yard make these factors important to me. These two mowers also revive the B&S vs Honda engine comparison, but I get the point that both are good and will serve me well as long as I take care of them and whatever the power, should be enough. Still, I read the Cub Cadet thread and I also like to have the data and analyze it myself, with the help of the forum too. So, I am going to give the push Honda a try and if that doesn't crank my motor, I will get the Toro SR 20092 and be done with it. Yep, the B&S one, aluminum deck, 5mph top speed. Red is a faster color too. The quandry continues, and the grass keeps growing, but not under my feet. Cheers.

I wish there were a 21" self propelled mower that had reverse as well. It would make forward and backward trimming around things much less tiresome. Sarlo, and some others, make a "high wheel" mower, where a tiny wheel or gear presses directly against the wheels to drive them. When it is released the rear wheels are completely free to "free wheel" without a belt or the transmission trying to fight you. The large wheels also roll over rough ground nicely. The mowers only have one speed though. They are also designed as rough duty mowers and don't have as much cutting height adjustability as regular residential mowers do. Another option are the friction plate drive systems like the old Snappers and Ariens mowers have. When the disc lifts free of the drive plate the engine is completely disconnected from the transmission. Pulling them backwards still turns part of the transmission but not as bad as fighting a badly functioning belt drive transmission. I don't know about current snapper rear wheel drive mowers, but Ariens only uses the friction plate transmission on their "classic" line of mowers these days. I only learned this year that it is not due to the transmission that mowers want to resist disengaging or freely rolling backwards. There is a special type of washer on the axle by the wheels that is supposed to grab when going forward but not grab when rolling in reverse. They may be plastic and wear out. I read that is why Toro, until recently, always had the grease zerks on the back wheels - to help keep those functioning. My 36" commercial walk behind has a simple safe reverse on it. Its called "operator assisted" reverse. You shift into reverse, but then have to give it a light tug before it rolls back. I don't know how the Peerless transmission accomplishes that, but it's like its asking you, for safety sake, if you are sure you want the mower to back up and the tug confirms it and the mower starts backing up.

Thanks for the replies fellas...i removed the belt cover yesterday and it looked like the belt had come loose and got stuck under the pully...the belt looked really old and frayed so I didn't even try running the engine after i saw the condition of the belt...since i wasn't sure what was causing the engine not to turn off with the lever like it should I decided to take it to my repair guy and have him fix the belt and that issue (if the belt was on the only problem I probably would've just fixed that myself).

I'll post back after the repair and let you know what was cause the problems...

forgot to post back about this. It turned out to just need a replacement belt and the reason it wasn't turning off with the lever at "stop" was because the little piece of metal that need to make contact down by the governor was touching. the repair guy just made the adjustment so that little thing touched metal and it killed the engine like it should.
