Lawn Mower's Replacement Tires???

Hello: I have a Troy Bilt lawn mower that needs new tires, but can't seem to find any. What I have found on eBay is the wheel with the tires. The wheels in my mower are perfect and don't need to be changed.

The cost of replacing the wheels and tires are about $100+, the mower is probably worth $75 or so. For me, the engine and everything esle aside from the tires runs great. It doesn't seem cost effective to buy the wheels because you need tires, when a couple of hundred $$$ more will get me a Recertified Honda HRX with basically everything new.

I don't want to buy a new mower because my runs great, still.

Any suggestions?

Tires will most likely not be available for that one. Some high-end mowers have replacable tires. If you did find tires for it, you take the wheel off and put it in hot water along with the new tire. After a good soak, you work the softened tire off the wheel and work the new one on. This is such a colossal PITA that most people will just buy the wheels, which usually are worn out in the axle bushing anyway. In your case, with FWD, those are probably the tires that are worn. Most FWD mowers wear out the tires because FWD spins the wheels a lot instead of driving the mower. They also usually have nylon gears on them which don't last long, so you probably would be ahead to just replace the wheels. Don't forget to replace the axle bolts at the same time.

Saxman, thanks for the reply.

I don't use the FWD feature because it tears/pulls the grass, so I don't even have the gears connected. The tires are worn out due to wear good use. The worst are the rear ones, the thread is comming off of it.

The deck is showing some surface rust here and there, but nothing terminal. I was thinking about selling it to my neighbor and getting a used 2-cycle Lawnboy from Craigslist for like $150 or so; what do you think?

I really like the way the sound and that off set wheel in the front. The color also reminds me of Kawasaki motorcycles...

@ bill kapaun - While I know that it would cost more to rebuild the engine than it would to buy a new mower, I'm just wondering if a new mower is going to last for 29 plus years. Another concern of mine is that the newer mowers have the smaller drive shafts which are prone to bending or breaking away at the key if the blade hits something hard. After taking a second look I think you're right about it being the exhaust valve that I'm seeing through the spark plug hole. The number on the engine is 143.344022. @ theoutsider - I added oil and was able to mow the back lawn with no problems, so hopefully the damage caused by running it without oil was minimal. I can't hear the metal-on-metal sound when it's running, only when the blade is coming to a stop or if I turn it by hand. @ tomplum - I'm pretty sure this mower doesn't have a flywheel brake (or do all mowers have them?) but I will definitely take another look to see if that's what's causing the noise. Knowing my parents, they're probably going to want to buy a new lawn mower when the time comes, as opposed to being without a lawn mower for however long it would take me to rebuild it (there's no off season, they use the mower every month of the year). If I ever have the opportunity (i.e., rainy weather or parents out of town for a few days) I'm going to remove the cylinder head and take a look at the piston and cylinder to see what kind of condition they're in. In my opinion, you are heading down the highway to hell on this one because your priorities are all wrong. You don't buy, modify and use some cheapo LT to try and bush hog a piece of property that is strewn with hazards. Go rent a skid steer loader with a tooth bar on the bucket and clean up all the rocks and other junk that is on this property. Even if you don't haul the stuff off site, you can heap it up in one spot for the time being. If stumps are an issue, then rent a stump grinder and deal with them. The only obstacle/obstruction left on the property should be live trees. The rest of the ground should be clean and level even if you don't want to have an actual lawn right now. The skid steer loader can shave off high spots and carry the dirt to fill in the low spots. If you don't know how to operate one, then hire a pro. Once you achieve the clean-up and levelling, then any LT will maintain it without fear of destroying itself or launching a chunk of something into the air that might hit a passerby. With your back condition, why would you even think that some LT with 12" rear rims is going to navigate smoothly over that terrain?

Yeah I think it will be more noticeable the higher you mow when the grass is rich with water and therefore supple. The blades will lie down more easily under the weight of the tractor. Since your lawn is so nice and wet and the weather is cooler, I would mow lower.

RB> Unless you are planning to sell it, the current price of your mower isn't relevant when making a decision to repair. If the wheels could be had for $100 then you would get a functioning mower for $100.

RB> Again, if the mower otherwise runs great then you have a choice - pay $100 for a functioning mower or pay $200 or more for a used machine that is likely suffering from deferred maintenance. Have you called the manufacturer to price out replacement wheels?
