Where do you get tiny birds for fairy gardens?

I've just started collecting items for fairy gardens and growing sedums, succulents, and moss ( squirrels keep burying stuff in moss pots!) I'd like to find inexpensive tiny birds to add when I put them together, but ebay and amazon were expensive. Any ideas? It'll probably be next spring before I can plant.Now I'm attempting totems and plate flowers.(These are new ideas to Sumter,SC)

Kim, I got mine at Hobby Lobby in the miniature section. They were resin, unlike the tiny birds at Michaels, so these hold up better outside.
There was some neat stuff there for Fairy Gardens, at least last year when I was looking.

Well I gave up on my fairy garden, after I found out that moomin mama wouldn't need a ladder for cleaning the second story windows. I'm really amazed at nack you've got for this, Purple. Even if I'm not commenting every time, I really enjoy your pictures. Keep 'em coming! For the bricks, you would have to make sure that you use a VERY thin paint if you go by the "shake'n'bake" method. Otherwise, I fear it would run down at the bottom while drying, in a way that would create a small tip on each brick. spray paint would be possible, as long as you keep a good distance to the bricks. Perhaps you could dry them on one of those plates, that little girls use for making pearl plates? -After they have dried you could "effect" paint them with a thin layer of slightly different colour pigment paint (not acrylics) on the sides that face out: put some thin paint on a flat surface (a lid or something) then dip a piece of sponge in the paint, then dap it on a piece of paper to get the worst excess off, and finally dab it onto the brick. You could also use this technique for the burgers. -For the illusion of searing, it's hard to get a brush that is thin enough... even a no 2 could easily make too fat chunks of paint, but perhaps if you take a string of hair, and strech it out between your fingers then dip it in: a: thin paint, and run it along the direction you want the line (still stretched out), or b: use a thicker paint, and remove some of the excess paint on a piece of paper, and run it along where you want the line on your burger (also with the hair still stretched out). Perhaps it could be done with cheese cutting wire, which is a bit thicker. I have yet to see a no 1 brush in an art supply store, but perhaps they would have it in a hobby supply store (I always wonder how people who paint tin soldiers makes those small dots for eyes). VG

Okay I am an older gal and I still like Fairy Gardens, heck my whole entire (rented house) house looks like a storybook house. It is an old fashioned looking old house kinda a coloring book shape. It lends itself to a country doll house look and boy oh boy all the statuarys of frogs and rabbits are galore. I know have kids pinwheels going as well, and now my big passion is rounding up mushrooms. I was out at a Pirate Faire and this one vendors cottage had a side yard that was an entire mushroom fairy garden...and now my mission is to collect as many mushrooms as I can find. There are so many things you can add to your garden..and being as creative as you are I am sure you don't need any recommendations from me..but here goes a few for others who are interested Mushrooms, little fairy's and gnomes, garden mice or moles statuary, small frogs. Oh the list goes on you get it...sometimes Rite Aid has small garden statuary...small ones that are itsy enough for your fairy theme. Recently Rite Aid has these tiny elfs that you hang on the edge of your pots (pot hangers) but I saw one that was kinda being suspended by its elastic string that had the price tag...and it gave me the idea to suspend some hanging from limbs of the dwarf orange tree...kinda like being suspended from their pants so to speak. A long time ago I bought these porcelain figurines of little children and they were suspended by their pants oh wait just looked at them their shirts soo cute (only about 2 inches) kinda gave me the same idea. I think they were called the Children of the Twelthtrees something like that..sorry I rambled on so.

I started putting seed out for the birds in the winter only. But they hung around expectantly in the spring, so I've continued feeding year-round, adding a couple bird baths. The entire area behind our tall, wooden fence has grown tall and wild - it's an unmaintained strip of "public utilities" land, and has become a natural habitat for birds (and other critters). So we have our backyard and gardens and the birds come and go from behind the fenced area. I bought an Audubon bird field book and enjoy looking up new visitors. There's always a new bird to id. Over the years I've added many suet feeders that attract all kinds of woodpeckers, nuthatches, and sapsuckers. All of the other "regulars" enjoy the suet occasionally, too, and all of them eat from the suet feeders year-round, not just in the winter. The biggest attraction, though, comes by way of everyone's favorite food that I now put out regularly on the deck rail - at least all the insect eaters: I buy inexpensive jars of dry-roasted, UNSALTED, peanuts. I run them through my food processor until they are crumbly. I have yet to see a bird that doesn't come and gobble them up, including the woodpeckers and especially the cardinals. We have hundreds of cardinals. The best part is in the spring, when the mother birds cram as much crumbled up peanuts as they can into their beaks and fly off to feed their babies, then come right back for more. This goes on all day and it makes me feel good that so many babies are being well fed. We've had several bluebird and mockingbird families come to our deck, as the young'uns grow and learn to fly. Later in summer, the visits pare way down, so I know they're on their own now as far as feeding themselves with insects or whatever they'd eat naturally. They don't come around much at all during the summer. It's really fun and interesting - I didn't start this expecting to be a "birder", but I guess that's what's happened. During the early winter, we have many birds stop by that aren't usually seen in NC, on their winter migrations to someplace warmer. Sorry for the long post!

Daughter's Fairy Garden

mine - or should I say my daughters - Ah! who am I kidding! It may be enjoyable to the girls and any little kids who stop by sit and stare for HOURS, but essentially it was my idea, I designed the whole thing, and have been the driving force behind having it at all... And I continue to think up and create new things for it... Anyway - mine has ended up being placed under a 2 year old corkscrew willow tree instead - It's closer to the house and is much much bigger than originally anticipated. For now the sweet woodruff and wild strawberries are filling out the area around the base of the willow, there's a violet and elfin thyme covered hill with a small lake at the bottom of it and a small gravel path leading to the top (a gazebo and miniture roses pruned to look like climbing roses are being added to the top of the hill later this fall) and a flattened out hollow covered in irish moss for a "meeting place." I have variegated forms of thyme and melissa lavender as shrubs around the edge of the garden and a few branches from my over zealous pink and white weigela hangs over the "hollow". The fairy garden is actually an extension of my butterfly garden, just slightly shaded (and will be deeply shaded when the willow fills out over the next couple of years) I just added some rembrandt tulips I hope will give a nice dramatic splash of color next spring before the freesias, columbine, violets and roses bloom. (and after years of plain colored tulips I can tell the girls that the fairies painted these ones!!!) I will post pics as soon as I can but right now I'm being selfish - want to keep it to myself till I feel it has some semblance of being ready for public viewing... :) Also waiting for the plants to fill out and really look like it does in my head (did that make sense or did I just seem nutty???) As well as the gazebo I'm working on 4 houses to put nestled in the sweet woodruff and a "bait shop" for beside the lake and looking for some small stumps or seats to put around the thyme hollow, maybe even a little swing for the fairy babes? Next year I'm hoping the willow will be big enough to dangle twinkling lights in and lots of birdhouses of course... Soon as I figure out where to put it I'm adding some white heliotrope that I grew from cuttings and have slightly too much of. Now I'm just hoping that the wild strawberries calm down cause they are going bananas and I fear they will choke out the rest of my plants... I'm 30 years old, mother of 4, a criminal psychologist in training and I am no afraid to admit that I love my garden. I am envisioning a few years from now laying in soft green grass in the shade of my contorted willow tree staring into the little village and seeing if I can see the sparkling glint of gossamer wings, or hearing the giggling of fairy children in the rustling leaves of the willow tree.....

I forgot to add that I do get my fairies through Enchanted Gardens and they have lots of miniatures available also. Shipping's not too bad and they ship pretty quickly. I've been ordering from them for several years now and it has always been a pleasant experience. Hope it's ok to post the website here. Tiny fairies are so hard to find - I've looked everywhere! Does anyone else have a good source for them? You can guess I use a lot, so I'm always on the look out for different ones.

I saw this great tip somewhere online or on a blog awhile back, wish I'd made note of WHO came
up with this idea so I could give her credit. Anyway, you can buy these packets of little bug buttons at Michaels. They are PERFECT for little fairy gardens!

The bug buttons are great Karen! I love the idea of using something in a different way than intended, especially if it is a good deal. I'm pleased to see this post cuz I was trying to think of how to make little birds out of small stones. Actually one small stone with beads geii'd on. Not what I hoped, lol. I think that I will buy a little concrete mold for a bird, and make a bird every time I use mortar mix. That way I will accumulate some. I wish there were bird ice cube trays...

Thanks also for letting me part of the group:) Kim ...PS I'm going to take some glass totems and plate flowers to County Fair (Farmers' Market participant invtied me) so I'll try to post pix next week:)

Bird candy molds do exist. I haven't found one yet that I want to make little concrete birds from. I did find a soap mold but I'm not sure that could handle concrete.

Yes the soap molds will do ok with concrete I use them all the time .Have not seen the bird one till now.

nanatricia, the one I want is a silicone slit mold. do you think it will work for concrete? It is expensive, but when you figure I would have to pay $8 to $12 each for a little concrete bird, then I would get my money's worth in 3 or 4 castings.

The seller has 10 of them on Ebay. This is my favorite that I have seen.

BTW the tiny little birds from Hobby Lobby come about 12 in a pkg. for ?? 2.99?? something like that. I usually stock up when they have their miniatures at half price so they're even cheaper.

Gosh I do not know about silicone.Look at some of the mold sites and see what the molds are made of .I do remember on the http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/hypertufa/ that some used hyp mix in them and made molds for cement.

Two Green Thumbs has had them before. If they are not on her site, she can get some of the small, resin ones for you in all different kinds of birds. Her webstore is http://www.shop.twogreenthumbs.com - she's got a bunch of really different things in the store.

Oh, and she used to put those buttons on little sticks as garden stakes, that's what reminded me of them.

I just did an ebay search for miniature birds.
Then I sorted for Lowest price + shipping

7 for $3. Some are porcelaine. Maybe this is more than you want to pay, but you never know what will turn up on ebay. Further down in this search is a rather inexpensive collection of mini glass animals.
