'88 Toro 20684 with Suzuki 2-cycle - governor failure

I have a 1988 Toro 20684 with the two cycle Suzuki engine. It started life as my dad's mower and for the last five years I have been fixing all the problems my dad let go. Recently my son went to my mom's to do the mowing. He called shortly after he got there and told me the engine was running way too fast. I instructed him on how to unstick the governor, but he said it was not stuck. I told him to get our mower and I would look later. When I did, I found that the throttle was pinned open. As the engine sped up, the governor made no attempt to slow it down. I thought something was disconnected, but it all looks right according to the drawings on the toro website. My questions to you are: What controls the governor lever on the side of the engine? If it fails, is the fix simple or does it take an engine teardown to get at? I think I can rig the throttle cable so I operate the throttle directly with no modulation from the governor, but then I will be fiddling with that the whole time I am mowing. I hope one of you can give me a "you silly boy, all you have to do is this." answer. Thanks for your help.

Usually, small engines used on lawnmowers are prevented from overspeed by an wind vane, or a sail, that is located adjacent to a spinning fan. The fan will be attached to the crankshaft, so the faster the crankshaft turns, the faster the wind blows. The vane has to be free to move, and it has to be attached to the throttle arm somehow, so that the throttle is closing, as the rpm's increase. There is always a cover or shield over the fan, and this cover will have to be removed before you can inspect the mechanism.

The Suzuki has a mechanical system but I don't know how it adjusts.

The "slop" may be either a loose blade (tighten the blade retaining bolt) or a loose/sheared woodruff key in the crank adapter that the blade bolts to (replace the 1/4" key). The crank itself wallowing around in its lower bearing support indicates bigger problems and the need to tear it down for inspection/rebuild. If you do have the Suzuki 47PZ2, you have a rare bird indeed. This was the first year of this engine series (1983) and the only year to use mechanical points triggered ignition. The following years 1984-2003, the 47P used solid state ignition, which used a small transistor mounted in the coil casing to fire the ignition ..which was prone to heat/vibration fatigue and often failed - see other threads on here & elsewhere about expensive 47P coil replacement and attempts to save them by heating them in an oven ..all thanks to that dime sized transistor that you don't have to worry about.

Oh I figure Im going to blow it up one way or another. I have people telling me to pin the thing all the way open but I didnt like how it speeds up and gets real loud with Way to much power,seemed dangerous . Fuel getting to filter - check Fuel getting to carb - check Rebuilt carb - check I was thinking to fiddle with the spring tension as well. maybe re position an arm or two. The only luck Iv had is fiddling with the air inlet bits. (Please see - set fire and marshmallows) Thank you though.

Kohler engines made in China?

I have two push mowers with Kohler motors made of Chinesium junk in China. Only reason I bought them was for the Kohler engine. Big surprise and disappointment. 5 hours use and won't start. Venture capitalists have been buying up these good names (Hoover, Electrolux, Kohler) and then make them in China and undercut local made. Takes about 4 years before people wake up to the scam. These capos don't care because they've made their money and moved onto the next one. You are left with Chinesium landfill. Chinese workers get $20 for a 10 hour day, 6 days a week. No pension, no workers comp insurance. Get your arm cut off in a machine you become a beggar on the street. Henry Ford said he wanted to pay his workers enough money so they could afford to buy his cars.

Hello guys, I have several Dura- Force carbed Lawn Boys. One is a 2001 commercial model 22261 that has many many hours on it. For the problem of a sticking governor vane, check for a loose throttle plate in the slot of the throttle shaft. A loose plate will move out of position and stick in the throttle bore of the carb. causing the governor vane to be stuck, and then surge with it comes loose. This is what was wrong with the 22261. To repair replace the throttle shaft and plate. To cure a surging problem, replace the crankshaft seals. The seal lips get hard and wear allowing the the motor to suck air into the crankcase on the compression stroke making the fuel mix lean and then the motor surges. Changing to richer jetting covers up and masks the problem like a band aid and does not fix the motor, but does make for excessive fuel consumption.

Enter through the parts section an the toro website and there will be a button for manuals with a Suzie manual there for free download. If everything appears there and in place, and you are able to slow the speed down by hand- then try an adjustment then seek the problem inside.

check for throttle shaft wear on the carb it wears and throttle shaft sticks causing runnaway condition. very common on this engine

I have some work to do now. The machine is otherwise in good shape. I hate to send it to the curb.
