Mower won't start unless you prime it even if it's warmed-up

I have removed the brass nut on the bottom of the carb and cleaned it. The mower now runs after you pump the bulb a few times and then start it. It seems to "labor" slightly like the gas/air mixture is "off" a little...and it won't start unless you pump the primer 3 to 4 X's even after it has been running for awhile. It starts on the 2nd pull after you pump the primer almost every time. I cleaned the two holes in the thread sides of the screw and one goes down in the bottom, but looks like a ball bearing in the bottom of the brass nutwhere the bottom hole goes to...any thoughts would be appreciated. How often should you change the plug? 21 inch Craftsman Mulcher rear bagger. 917.388400 I'm a new user and like all the info...thanks again.
