best mail order companies is the best?
Comments (12)It's kind of late, but I recommend John Scheepers/ Van Engelen, Brent and Becky's Bulbs, Odyssey Bulbs, Old House Gardens and Colorblends. For lilies, I like The Lily Garden--just be aware it's a little company and they are slow to charge your card and/or cash your check. They send the bulbs when the bulbs are "ready". Dutch Gardens is basically okay, but don't buy bare-root perennials from them. Quality from Park's and Wayside Gardens is good for bulbs--avoid the non-bulb plants. Same goes for White Flower Farm (WFF). WFF seems to have reduced their prices for bulbs to about the industry standard--they used to be hideously overpriced. Avoid Michigan Bulb, Van Dyck's, Breck's and Van Bourgondien. Check out ANY merchant at www.gardenwatchdog.com before buying. Generally speaking, I prefer those merchants who have at least an 80% positive rating--and be sure to read the negative ratings. Some of the posters are just whiners ("I planted my bulbs, then it flooded and the company wouldn't refund my money...") and can be ignored. Others have legitimate complaints. For those of you who want really unusual, unique stuff, I have tried Telos Rare Bulbs, Jane McGary and am trying Far West Bulb Farm. So far no complaints. There are a couple other daffodil vendors out there I want to try, too, and a guy who specializes in snowdrops. By this point you probably will have joined several plant societies and know about the specialist suppliers anyways :-)...See MoreMail Order Fruit Tree Vendors
Comments (14)Most of the names I'd have mentioned have been, with the exception of St Lawrence Nursery. They are good for cold hardy trees and have a very good selection of apples. They are a small, family run place, and as such may take a while to get back to you in their busy season. But their trees have always done well for me (with one exception which they replaced)....See MoreMail order vendors for trees & shrubs, whose the best?
Comments (7)FWIW ... getting your trees/shrubs at local nurseries is the ideal choice. That way ... you see exactly what you're getting (i.e. health, size, number of branches, buds, etc.) ... and you get to pick the plants which work best for you. OTOH ... when you go mail order, ... you get what they send you ... which is, typically, not as nice as you could have found and picked out yourself. But ... there may be reasons that you want to go mail-order. One of these might be ... selection. Local nursersies, typically, don't carry anything but the most common selection of trees/shrubs ... cause this is what your typical buyer will purchase. If you want something which is even the least bit different from the norm ... your only option may be mail-order. That said ... mail-order vendors which I have been pleased with are listed below ... www.songsparrow.com www.forestfarm.com www.musserforests.com Songsparrow is located in the mid-west, so shipping isn't as high, ... plants are very nice, ... and their selection has been adequate for me most of the time. Forestfarm is located in the west, ... so their shipping costs are higher (to the eastern states) ... but their plants are nice ... and their selection is huge. Musser Forests is particularly good for getting large quantities of smaller trees and shrubs ... at lower prices....See MoreRecs For Mail Order Companies With Decent Shipping Prices
Comments (15)...oh my goodness where do I start... I love Cotinus 'Grace'.... in my last garden it grew huge and I pruned it late winter - easy to do, a pleasure to saw through or lop off... my plant was 10 foot by 8 foot and I tried to keep it that way...although you don't get all the smoky flowers with pruning... ...I like that woodland setting above there but this is my plant in this garden, against a fence and fairly exposed... it's young but it should be 8 foot or so by this summer... it's big and butchy but mine will have to be as I have clematis to support and now a climbing rose will be using it too, but it's strong enough for all that...with a good open structure.... ...another plus is the long lasting autumn colour, and here I just think it's unbeatable in this country... I do hope you like it as much as I do......See Morejellyman
