re-do bermuda lawn? - plan review - with pics
Comments (3)When bermuda is mowed down as low as it should be, there is not much you can do to stop the weeds from looking weedy. If you don't get rid of all of them with RoundUp, you'll have them back. It is unlikely you need topsoil for any part of this renovation. Unless you have low spots where there is standing water for days after a long rainstorm, then you don't need more topsoil. Here are my suggestion for a tune up. Step 0: On April 15th, fertilize with alfalfa pellets Step 1: On May 15th, Roundup entire lawn Step 2: Water briefly, 3x per day for 5 days and roundup again Step 3: Water briefly 3x per day and RU again Step 4: Wait 5 days then scalp and remove the clippings. Step 5: There is no step 5 in this new context. Step 6: Spread seed Step 7: If you feel a strong need to cover the seed, use compost Step 8: Roller over the seed and/or compost Step 9: Fertilizers only work on roots. You don't have any yet. By the time you get some, the started will be somewhat depleted. The reason for the alfalfa up front was so you would not need starter fert. Step 10: Water 3-4 times daily for a few weeks Notes: If you start this process now, you will waste all that time, effort, and money because bermuda seed needs hot soil to germinate. The approach I outlined will get your seed on the ground in June. That is perfect timing. Alfalfa pellets are an organic fertilizer. Organics are a biological process whereby the microbes in the soil convert the pellets into plant food. The process takes 3 weeks and does not deplete like chemical fertilizers. If you scalp off the tops before spraying with round up, then there is nothing for the round up to attach to. It needs to land on the blades of grass and weeds to take up the round up into the plant. Don't scalp. Definitely roll the new seed to ensure good seed-to-soil contact. Topsoil is unnecessary for any of this. Mother Nature seeds by knocking seeds on the ground followed by herbivores stepping on the seed. Your soil will be very moist with the weeks of watering....See MoreNeed advice on lawn redo...round 2

Comments (3)Lawn rollers are used for pushing seed into the surface of the soil. They are not for leveling the surface. Here is how tilling creates a bumpy surface: When you rototill you cannot possibly hold the tiller to a smooth, even depth. The tiller wobbles around in a herky jerky motion due to differences in the soil structure, rocks, roots, dry/moist, and other factors. When you reach a particularly hard spot the tendency is to stop moving and let the tiller fluff the soil real well. After you have finished tilling you will have very fluffy soil in heaps and mounds and a solid surface of untilled soil below the fluff. That hard surface below is bumpy. When you level the fluffy surface on top, you will be leaving a varying depth of fluffy soil. When all that fluffy soil settles, it will settle to match the profile of the uneven surface down below. Thus you end up with a bumpy lawn. And yes, I realize that just about every website, magazine article, book, and expert will tell you to rototill, but as a former employee of a finish grader (he prepares the surface for the landscaper), we did not even own a rototiller. All we used was a tractor with a box blade. It you wanted to hire that done, a good driver should be able to finish an average lot in a morning unless you have a lot of trees. My niece's husband can repair 2 acres in less than an hour. NOW is the time to reseed if you are going to do it. Your previous project in the spring/summer was doomed from the start....See MoreHow to redo my whole yard
Comments (4)Here is how I did mine. I live in west valley city, Utah, and redid it 6 years ago I went to landfill and got a pick up load of mulch for 30.00 tilled it in to my hard clay soil and smoothed leveled out the dirt with a 2x4. purchased some sod from lowes and it was okay for 5 years, It became a little lumpier than I like and some spots were not growing well in year 5. Fast forward to last week, I let it die off this year, I re-tilled the existing dirt and it was the best soil ive ever seen. The landfill mulch was the best thing I could have ever done for it. I did take out a few inches re-spread and leveled the tilled dirt this time using a 2x4 for the rough grading and a push broom for the finish grading(works best if you drag instaed of push). It was very level and professional looking. we then laid the sod on the freshly tilled and leveled dirt. and so far its the best its ever looked. Its been a week and looks good the lines are gone and needs to be mowed soon. I used a mini tiller to till the 30x30 area. It worked good enough for me. the sod was purchased at a place off of 90th and 300 west in Sandy, Utah(forgot the name). For the 30 x30 area it cost me 180.00 it was 22 cents per square foot and I used 2 pallets and picked up the sod in my truck (2 trips), but later found out they deliver for 45.00 and if its over a certain amount delivery is free!
