I'm looking at the Snapper P21875B vs. the P21875BV and the P2160KWV

I want a self-propelled mower that can be used both for lawn cutting (including mulching and also for picking up leaves in the fall.) I have a bad back.

2 questions:

1. Thoughts on any of these vs. toro higher end mowers. My sense is Snapper has the Vaccu technology and is better suited for doing both mowing and picking up leaves. Sugestions? Are there toro models that have the high vac technology that helps with picking up leaves? (snapper models seem to be more expensive, but my thought is they are sturdier.

2. Among these Snappers, which one? are the P21875BV and the P2160KWV worth the extra money? ? more power better vacumming for leaf pick up?

I have the RP2160KWV, it's the same (I think) mower as the P2160KWV but comes with a Ninja mulchimg blade. I've used the side discharge, bagging and mulching options and prefer the mulching. I too have a bad back and have found a trip or two mulching leaves is better than bagging but it bags well too if that's your preference. The other Snapper you listed shows more power but I don't see how one would need more than the Kawasaki delivers. Sorry, I've never used a Toro so I can't speak about them.

Just to clarify, the Kawasaki is rated at 6.0 _horsepower_, wherease the Briggs Intek is rated at 8.75 lb/ft of torque (they call it 8.75 "torque," which is assinine nomenclature because there is no such unit as a "torque"). Snapper, which is now owned by Briggs, has a vested interest in confusing buyers about power ratings, because the B&S engines simply don't make the same real power as their Japanese counterparts. Make no mistake: the Kawasaki makes significantly more power than any Briggs for a walk-behind mowers. The only comparable engine on the market is the Honda GCV190. Whether you _need_ that much actual power is hard to say. However, the Intek isn't much lighter or smaller and I don't think it has the commercial duty iron liner and other heavy-duty qualities that the Kawasaki has. So the only negative in getting the Kawasaki is the price premium. The Briggs DOV and Quantum engines are much lighter and smaller, so there are other benefits to settling for the most basic engines.

1 and 2 are not a problem. Different from other mowers but its only a matter of getting use to it. Snapper has used the propelled lever since the 70's and the pressure required to operate it is so lite most folks come to love it. The bale control coming up from the bottom is used on some other mowers and is not a real problem either. Do what i do in the shop, use a velcro strap to engage the bale control, as long as you are stupid and want to place your hands under the deck when running. The velcro strap is easy to zip off to shut the mower off when ready to. Just don't use it to hold bale when not using, doing so will prematurly streatch the cable and the need to replace. # 3. Yeah that's always been a sore subject. I would not loop the rope out to the pulley and let it come straight up over the top of the bag. Depending how high the handles are set this may mean the rope slightly drags the bag and wears on it so adding a strip of sheet metal, glued to the top of the bag might be needed. #4 makes no sense. You grab the front of the bag with left hand on the top of the bag frame, well away from the pulley which you no longer are using. This will put you at issue with the starter rope which has been re-routed. But there is enough slack in the recoil that a lift to clear the chute and slide out to the left becomes second nature after doing it several times. It all a matter of becoming accustomed to something a little different. I think once you've used it a while and enjoyed a true differential drive system and one that pulls back with zero resistence you'll come around to thinking the same.

Water in the fuel is a possibility. Dump all the gas and fill it with new fuel from another can or source. If that fails to fix the problem you will have to do some testing.... Get a spark plug socket and be prepared to quickly remove the spark plug. Run it till it dies and pull the plug, lay it on the metal part of the engine while connected to the plug wire and get someone to pull the starter or try the electric start while you watch for a spark. If no spark then it is likely a heat related ignition coil failure. Before trying a new coil put a new plug in to be sure it isn't the culprit. The key here is getting it to fail before testing.

Yellowfin: Price was my biggest consideration in refusing the Ninja bade, but engineering superiority of the generic blade I bought was the deciding factor even if the prices had been the same. The generic blade I purchased (Forgot the brand name long ago.) has an undulating blade design. The blade is bent to lift the grass at the outer edge and bent on the inner edge to force the grass back down. The generic blade is sharpened almost all the way to the mounting hole. I have always been happy with the clipping quality of regular blades because I cut grass on a regular basis and the resultant clippings are fine enough with regular blades. Where mulching blades excel is if you miss your regular mowing schedule and you have to cut tall grass. I used to use my dethatching blade mounted by itself on my mower until this year when I started attaching it to the bottom of my regular blade with high lift wings and that allows me to dethatch and bag at the same time. I am going to experiment this year by placing a generic 20" blade under my 21" blade to see if I can induce even more lift when cutting my grass. If the 20" blade does induce more lift, I will be able to raise my cutting height on the mower to the highest clearance notch which will give me about 1/2" higher grass and I will only lose 1/16" because the second blade will sit that much lower than the primary blade. Cutting at the highest height setting with just the primary blade does not give decent suction to raise my Kentucky Bluegrass and the cut is not as nice as the next highest setting. The reason I am going to use a 20" blade on the bottom of a 21" blade is because of the rolled under lip the Snapper decks have. A double 21" blade setup might not clear the lip. Fairyprincess

Your old Snapper was from the 1950's and would be a collectible today. It was good for rough cutting because the blade was belt driven and provided a degree of slip, should you hit something. Most rotary mowers today are hard coupled, meaning the blade is keyed and bolted to the crankshaft. You might consider a mower with a blade-brake-clutch (BBC). These provide a measure of protection for the engine should you hit a rock or stump. As for the roller/skid arrangement, I'm not sure anyone has something like that. Another approach mighted be one of the wheeled string trimmers. They usually have a 5 to 8hp engine and spin very heavy line, and can knock down anything organic up to about 2" dia. Hope this helps.

I've been happy for about 8 years with my Snapper walk behind with BS 6 hp engine but I now wonder about the "cut quality". My yard is not super flat/level but after I cut it seems the grass looks very rough??
Anyone else have this?

After looking at Toro and Honda, I purchased the Snapper P216019KWV with the Kawasaki 6hp Model FJ180V 6.0 engine. I picked the Snapper because the dealers I spoke with felt it had the best suction for picking up leaves. It came with the optional Nija blades for mulching, but so far, I only have used it for bagging and side discharge. The engine has more than enough power. The rear wheel drive system is basically the same as they have used for many years. It is simple and reliable. It does not have the blade clutch as my old one did, but it is easy to restart when necessary. I have never used a Honda, but I heard they are well made, but expensive to fix, especially if the drive line fails. I am very satisfied with the cut I get with the Snapper, even when the grass is long and wet. Charles Ranheim
