Empire Zoysia Fertilizer Brands

I searched Ace Hardware, Lowe's, Home Depot and Pike Nursery for a Zoysia specific fertilizer. I read on a sod web site that this grass should have a 16-4-8 fertilizer, however I can't find a store that sales it.

I purchased the Pennington Brand 27-4-6 from Lowe's but have not applied it. Pennington has a Carolina Special 16-4-8 but so far I haven't found it sold in any local metro Atlanta stores.

So what fertilizer should I use as a substitute?

There is no such thing as a Empire Zoysia fertlizer. The sod farm website gave you generic information like I do for any grass using a 4-1-2 or 3-1-2 fertlizer for the first spring application in lieu of a soil test.

4-1-2 and 3-1-2 are what is called a natural or natures balance of the 3 main nutrients. To know what you really need, only a soil test can tell you what is really needed. Your soil test could come back and tell you are extremely high in Phosphorous and Potassium. If that is the case you will not need any for a few years and only need straight Nitrogen.

As a generic recommendation you use a 3-1-2 ratio for the first application in spring, and then just straight nitrogen for the rest of the applications that year.

So for Zoysia one app of a balanced in spring, followed by one application of nitrogen about 10 weeks later and you are done for the year.

A pre-emergent, probably mid-march depending on what part of GA you are in. I would recommend Dimension or Barricade which you won't find in the big box stores. If your limited to the big box stores, look for Scott's Halts As far as the fertilizer, it depends on whether you want to go organic or synthetic. If you elect synthetic you want to wait until the lawn starts greening. Organic doesn't matter as long as the grounds not frozen and could be washed away by rain.

Your links are good, just too big for this forum. Looks like too much shade and/or water. Near the patio that could be urine damage. Usually it is a much more well defined spot, but your grass is so thin. Where do you live? If you live in the south, would you consider St Augustine?

wmr. Do you want to go organic, synthetic, or some hybrid of both? the good thing is Zoysia doesn't require the amounts of nitrogen Bermuda does, so your choices should be relatively easy.

You have already put down iron. Did it need it in the first place?. Anyway Zoysia grass only needs two fertilizer applications per year. Once in the spring when it greens up, and another about 8 to 10 weeks later and you are done for the year til next spring.
