Question on newly seeded lawn and killing weeds

I seeded my lawn the first part of April. (Zone 5, Denver area) After 3 - 4 weeks, I put a fertilizer down specifically for new lawns and it looks great, all except the weeds.

I have been trying to pull them by hand, but they just are growing faster than I can pull.

I wanted to put a weed killer on it, the bad said after it has been mowed 3 times or more I could. But I cant find any weed killer without fertilizer in it!

So, will it hurt it now to put fertilizer on it again? If so, what can I use instead to get these weeds killed?

It is a sun/shade mix of kentucky bluegrass and fescue.

There are ALOT of weed killers on the market that don't include fertilizers. Trimec Plus is one I've used with good results down here on broadleaf weeds in my yard. The first step is to identify what the weeds are exactly that you want to kill & then go from there. The big box stores (HD & Lowes) have hose end spray kits for weeds but I've never really liked to use those. Do some searching on the internet for other places that carry more of a variety of lawn control products....Good luck.

Whether they have fertilizer or not, they will probably tell you not to use weed killer until you've mowed three times. Broadleaf weedkillers are safe for established grass but can harm or even kill young grass.

According to the label, after the 3rd mowing the grass should be able to take using Weed-b-Gone. It also says you can reseed after three weeks, so you should be OK. The only issue is the heat. The grass is stressed in the summer and the weed killer further stresses it. I'd suggest spot spraying - just apply it to the weeds you see. Capt Tom

Did you roll the seed down? Did you water 3x per day for 3 weeks while the seed was fresh on the ground? Where do you live? What kind of seed did you use?

My grass seed says I can plant a week after I've used Roundup. It's bare earth, new lawn, but I've got brambles and broad leaf weeds aplenty. What do you think?

SillyRabbit--You're asking a completely different question.

Using roundup, then seeding is different from seeding, then using a broadleaf weedkiller.

You might want to start a new thread since your situation is so different. Some additional information you should include is where you are, what kind of grass you are planning to plant, whether you've already applied the RU or are just planning to apply it.

I have a nice seeding that was started last labor day(20,000 sq feet). I have mowed maybe 5 times and I just sprayed with 2-4d.
The weeds are terrible but I have just ignored them the past 6 weeks.
Needless to say, many of those weeds have a headache right now and in 2 weeks they will be gone.
Weed-b-gone does not have fertilizer in it.
I'm using some farm strength stuff that does a number on just about anything broadleaf.

I know it's frustrating, but I would keep pulling the weeds by hand rather than use a chemical weed killer. You really need to grass to get thick before you can stop the weeds long term.
