What to do about dead grass?

We are located in northeast Dallas county and have a front lawn of St. Augustine. It struggled last year in areas, due to two large shade trees, but it did very well over most of the yard. Toward the end of the summer last year, we started getting a few brown patches where the grass seemed to die off. We assumed this was because of all of the wet weather we had last year.

Now, here it is May, and our front yard has almost NO grass. The St. Augustine looks almost completely dead. There are little bits of it coming through here and there, but not enough to even make the yard look green, and in the areas where it was thin already, we just have dirt. I'm not sure what happened. Was it the unusually cold weather?? The weird thing is that we have a mix of bermuda/St. Augustine in the back yard and the St. Augustine looks great back there. The front is just awful. . . just dead straw, bare dirt and a few grassy weeds.

Not sure what to do now. We had the trees trimmed recently, so the lawn is getting some sunlight, but even on the side where there is full sun, the grass looks dead. Should we resod?
