Push Reel Mowers -- Sweet Gum Balls a problem?

Hi -- I live in Va. Beach on about an acre and we've got a John Deere riding mower. We're trying to decide on something for the small areas where we can't use the riding mower -- I'm leaning towards a reel mower, but my husband is not very enthusiastic (he wants a small gas(rotary?) mower. I've read some postings on this forum about the pros/cons of reel mowers, and I saw someone mention that you need to remove most twigs before mowing with one -- as well as walnuts. Our sweet gum balls are about an inch in diameter (like a sycamore ball) -- does anyone know if that would pose a problem? We try to remove them each year, but some get partially embedded in the ground and we miss a lot of them -- it would be painful to have to get every one...

I'd appreciate your advice! Thanks.
