Today's update... almost as good as it can get!

Here's the old pic from about 3 weeks ago....

Today I lowered my cutting height from 0.625" to 0.5". Grass is mature enough now that the roots don't get ripped out. Took some pictures after I finished mowing. The weeds that started popping up two weeks ago have almost been smothered out by the bent. I found a few dandelions trying to flower at 0.5" today but they got ripped apart when I mowed! (evil grin). By June I think my lawn will be 100%.

I know nothing about bent grass, but, I'd say your observation would be hard to argue with judging by those pics. Good job!

Wow! What a difference 3 weeks makes - great job! Are you cutting it that low with a tractor?

Dena, I have a funny story for you about an incident that happened at Walmart's a few days ago. I went in for something else, but of course I had to go through the gardening area to get there, and right there in front of me was a rack of hanging baskets that caught my attention. I selected two, put them in my cart, and a lady came running down one of the isles screaming at me that she had been "looking" at those. I told her I was sorry, but I wanted these two and she should have put them in her basket. While she was arguing with me, another lady came along, put the other two in her basket and headed for the cash register. This really angered the first lady and she ran after the lady that took the last two screaming "you will share those with me", and the lady screamed back "NO, I WILL NOT", and continued to the check out. I thought there was going to be a big confrontation, but she just continued her mouthing in a very loud voice, and it became very funny --- everyone was looking at her and laughing. Poor lady, hope she found something she liked.,

This worked for my Aussie lass. She had ACE as a sedative for spay surgery. The 2nd time I gave it to her as an oral sedative, prescribed, for extreme dures riding in the car. Fortunately I gave her only 1/2 dose. Still, we nearly lost her! She became non-responsive and stopped breathing repeatedly. I had to apply gentle percussion and intermittently shake her awake. It was a weekend, we were traveling and 3 hours from emergency care. When we arrived home we took turns monitoring her, awakening her when needed, and applying percussis. She was only 1.5 years old! We never gave her ACE again. Instead we worked with behavior modification using short rides with reward; visiting our Aunt, 2 houses down, via the vehicle. It took many trips before she got over her extreme fear of the automobile. Also, her son, 1/2 Aussie and 1/2 German Shepherd had a pre-sedation for dental cleaning; although I PUT ON FORM IN ALL CAPS NO ACE! The vet administered it to him right in front of me. It took 2 1/2 weeks for him to return to normal. Now I know to give them 1 teaspoon of Activated Charcoal powder in diluted chicken broth IMMEDIATELY. It is tasteless and odorless. Within 20 minutes symptoms subside. It has saved a neighbor's dog that was poisoned. Now they are both sedated with special anesthesia used for Sight hounds. Of course I have only sedated each one time since then, both were total emergencies. I also keep Benadryl

Rita, it is probably a good thing that you didn't have the cash on you.... I've seen Featherweights on Ebay and Craigs List for for 300 if they were in mint condition, but I'm not sure one in poor condition would be worth it. I told Kate about one I saw a few weeks ago (but she already has a FW) on C/L that was in poor condition and lacked the case.... I think it was about 100 bucks, but I might be wrong... when you turn 29, your memory starts to fade. :o)

Thanks Dilly. I've been practicing "Irish Diplomacy" for 50 years now. I agree, it's an art and a craft. My Dad taught it to me well and only pull it out when I actually want them to go there. Other than that it's just a wee bit of blarney :) I agree dianalo, no one ever factors that stuff in. Loss of sleep, loss of a day's work, etc. But I never asked for any of that, just the stuff for my new kitchen. But most Mom's are like that. I don't think they listened to reason, I think they were a scared of my "Irish Diplomacy" And yeah, it feels good to take on the big guys and win! I was thinking of you in the middle of the night when I was trying to clean up the mess. My troubles are a wee bit of a drop in the pond compared to your ocean of troubles and battles. Wind at your back... Sorry about your next door neighbor Breezy. Maybe a thread to brainstorm how to shut him/her up? It is affecting your kitchen,, right ;) Thanks Lynn, jmcgowan, and lascatx . Overall I am happy with the owner, not his employees though. At least he is aware of what they are doing now. It has been a big PITA when the kitchen was sooo closed to being done, but it could have been worse. What if I wasn't home when it happened? What if I had particle/laminate cabs instead of solid? What if the cork was a floating? These are the things that keeps me awake. Silly I know. I'll keep everyone posted on the cork floor prill. So far so good. The floor guy didn't think the water got bewween the subfloor and the cork b/c it's glue down. Plus it has 4 coats of urethane on top. If I have been remiss in saying what a s support this forum has been during the kitchen reno, I'm saying it now. Thanks to you all!

When did you renovate your lawn again? I'm going to recommend it to my friend. Did you ever deal with weeds badly?

I'm cutting it with a manual reel mower every other day. I alternate cutting direction by 90 degrees every other cut.

I only hope it can invade his crapfest of a lawn. . He has creeping charlie and dandelions that keep trying to spread into my lawn. My advantage though is my grass is well fertilized and maintained. His is not.

I renovated it August 4th, 2007. I had a handful of weeds that sprang up in September, but I sprayed them with Weed-B-Gon at the end of September. There were a few this spring that I have already sprayed. Probably three to five weeds in the entire backyard at the moment.

We're going to have to start recommending bentgrass on this forum for people that don't want a 3" tall stand of grass. I'm really pleased with it, especially with its spreading ability. It's currently putting out stolons like crazy now. Must be that 3 lbs of nitrogen it's already gotten this spring. . I'll probably give it another 1 lb in a few weeks!

Thanks! It's probably darn near impossible to grow bent in Texas. Disease would probably eat it alive in summer.

Wow, wxman!! Great job! Your lawn went from zero to hero in 3 weeks!! Well done. I can't believe a manual reel mower can make such a nice cut... Our putting greens don't look as good as your lawn and they get mowed every day with $30,000 commercial reel mowers...

Now that your lawn is nearly out of the "under construction" stage, I will back down on the synthetic fertilizer and start with organic. Espoma makes a nice organic fertilizer if you can find it in your area. If you decide to continue using synthetics, then I recommend Howard Johnson.

Anyway, good job and keep the pictures coming.

Pic's and dates don't lie but if I had to mow bent or unbent grass, every other day, You would see artificial turf in a heart beat :) That was a well of a improvement, spray RU on the neighbors border and tell him that bent grass don't like weeds :)
