2 year old toro needs a new engine
Comments (8)This is extremely odd, particularly with the use of STA-BIL which contains fuel system cleaners. I'd say there was some fault with the engine in some way, making it run rich or perhaps burn oil. Wait...10W30? The manual should require SAE 30. Maybe it was burning a little oil with the multi-grade. Recently I got a mower running for my sister-in-law (I had bought it new in '89 and given it to them a few years ago). It had been run with bad gas - real bad, 7 or 8 years old, then left to sit for two years. It was terribly carboned-up and the oil was like tar. When I pulled the plug, two hunks of carbon fell out. All I did was remove the oil and gas, put a new plug in and replace the fluids. The thing ran perfectly. I cleaned it up and took it back. The point is, I don't believe the story about the carbon destroying the engine. In order for this to be true, the engine would have gradually lost compression as it burned more and more oil (with blue/white smoke), finally getting too weak to run. But this is not a sudden thing and it would start smoking long before the end. Also, the oil would get black after only an hour or two of use. Since your mower ran fine one day but wouldn't start the next, I suspect a clogged jet in the carburetor. I hope you still have the mower. BTW, it requires complete engine disassembly to make the diagnosis they gave you, and the engine is basically not worth the labor to do that. I doubt they tore down the engine to examine the piston and cylinder....See MoreCraftsman Lawnmower Won't Stay Running Part 2

Remove that and inside is a plastic piece, this meters the flow of fuel and if missing can explain flooding. Also carb is extruded aluminum and there is a small hole drilled in it for the bowl to breath, that could be the other cause. Lastly dirt is holding the carb needle open- hold the carb bowl in your hand off the carb and let the gas flow in and see if the bowl overflows while outside the carb. If it only runs for a sec, upon removing the screw from the bowl the plastic piece inside - get a drill and drill it just a hair larger - so far this personaly worked for me 3 for 3 of these. Do this after trying cleaning it out the same piece with a paperclip. Sorry all if parts of my post are a repeat. ihwall50- black smoke, too much gas from dirty air filter, try banging the filter on the street curb knocking dirt loose and try again. if it improves, get a new filter....See Moreold (80's) Toro & Lawnboy 2 cycle mowers
Comments (9)Hmmm...thought this was a lawn mower forum, not a Miss Manners forum. Well "Dad", perhaps you should spend more time w/your children & less time here making insipid remarks. Fyi, the kid who heled me move was also reimbursed w/a pretty nice 27spd Cannondale mtn bike, needing a bit of work, but not so much so as to prevent him from riding it 15 mi to my house & back for a week...I also bought him lunch every day. The mowers were his idea. Why don't I bring them to your place...might get your kids out from in front of the TV?...See MoreToro Recycler 22in Lawn Mower Model NO. 20031 won't start
Comments (5)While the basic engine was good, the problems you are describing was common with the carburetor. The primer bulb on this model has always been marginal in fuel delivery. This pumps a small amount of air pressure into the float bowl and a small amount of fuel is pushed up the venturi tube. If the seat for the float needle swells slightly, the fuel level in the float bowl is lowered and the primer bulb lacks capacity to move the fuel up the venturi tube. Also, air leaks develop on the bowl gasket and the o rings located on the venturi tube. Sometimes the plastic float warps further affecting the fuel level. The main fuel jet may be partially blocked by dirt, fuel varnish or the effects from ethanol fuel. A carburetor kit does not provide all the parts needed to restore this carburetor. Many of the aftermarket carburetors do not work properly due to air leaks around the venturi tube o rings....See Moredan_in_redding
