Still need to spray peach tree??

Hello all,

the tips of the young branches on my peach tree show some type of invader and they are dying/shrivelling. Should I continue to spray the tree or just cut off the affected tips??

This late in the yr just prune the affected tips off. Next spring start spraying at bud break and try to wipe out the over-wintering generation. I completely wiped out peach twig borer in my greenhouse by killing the over-winter brood using BT. Have been free of this problem for two summers now. You will have reinfestation outdoors but you might greatly reduce the problem for next summer. Outdoors BT doesn't last long in the sun. An insecticide will last longer.

Ravi, I don't know where you live but for me that symptom is oriental fruit moth boring into the shoots -- I have never seen a peach twig borer here. In any case the treatment is similar since they are both caterpillars. I have been using spinosad with very good results in the last year. Generally these guys don't cause enough damage anyway, I am only spraying because I am spraying the fruit. They have the advantage of controlling the vigor of summer growth a bit, limiting the amount of summer pruning I need to do. The main reason why I spray the tips is to reduce the overall moth population so I will get fewer in my fruits, not to protect the tips.

You can use your copper for leaf curl, but that's all its good for. It is somewhat effective against bacterial spot, but I doubt that will be an issue for you in NH. Copper has a good degree of safety, so if you are worried about children and pets, it's about the best thing you can use for leaf curl. Probably the only insect in NH you'll have to deal with is plum curculio, and brown rot the only disease. Those are problems for bearing age trees, so I wouldn't worry about them this season. To reiterate some points made above. Insectides should not be sprayed when trees are blooming, period (it's also illegal here in the US)! (I'd respectfully disagree with Beeone: when the tree is in bloom you should not spray with insecticide period, even at night; insecticides are designed to retain their lethal effect for quite a while and typically will remain extremely toxic to bees, which will alight on the flowers the next day and die.) This means that the combo-fruit tree sprays found in garden centers, which contain insectides as well as fungicides, should not be used when the trees are in bloom. I looked up Fruit Plus on line. It is a combo-spray, made up of the insecticide Phosalone and the fungicide Ferbam. If you read the instructions carefully -- and you should -- you will see that it should not be used when trees are in bloom. The label will tell you exactly when you should use it. I take it that the recommendation you mention was to use one of Fruit Plus, Ambush or Diazinon -- not all three at once! Of course, whether you need to spray will depend on your conditions. Here in Maryland, for example, if we do not spray at petal fall our stone fruit and apples will all be destroyed by plum curculio and/or oriental fruit moth. But I have no idea whether these are a concern in Canada where you are. Call your local extension service (or its equivalent) and see what kind of pest pressures are typical of your area. You might well be lucky and not have to deal with the pest pressures we have down in the Mid-Atlantic. Why mess around with toxic chemicals when you don't have to?

Have you seen any stink bugs? They feed on green fruit, causing damage and increasing the risk of brown rot (WVU Kearneysville). There aren't any pesticides for home use for stink bugs. They're very slow moving, however... I've only found a few, and I picked them up and flushed them down the toilet. Someone last year in this forum described a DIY stinkbug trap... wish I had bookmarked that. Most people recommend that you identify your particular pest so you can choose an appropriate spray. If you post pictures here, someone with more experience may be able to help. Once you've identified your problems, you may find the Virginia Tech spray guide helpful: Virginia Tech Home Fruit Sprays. You probably won't need all the sprays they list, that's why it's so important to figure out which problems you are having. Good luck!

Spraying in fall after leaf fall and before bud brake for leaf curl Thiram best percentage of control and yes seed treatment copper spray is next with lower precentage contol go to lowes and look in garden book there under fruit trees peaches leaf curl if have this desease. A Fruittree spray with 3 to 4 ingredents will give some contol. Common desease of peachtrees is leaf curl peach brown rot insects moths trunk borers.

what varieties of peach trees are you growing?? I, too am in zone 5 and am wondering what varieties that grow here in Pittsburgh, PA. Thanks!!!

coug51eh, i am in zone 5a and i know that i can grow Red Haven peaches. i have 2 others that i have yet to figure out their variety, but they have done well here.

ravi, i just pruchased my first BT concentrate, but i have read about it for some time before buying. it is a biological pesticide that is really helpful with control of caterpillars, loopers, cabbageworms, leaf rollers, and gypsy moths. probably many more critters too that they don't list. it can be used up to the day of harvest and won't hurt beneficials. seems to be pretty good stuff so now to find out for myself.
