Toro PT21 22194 on Ebay = low price

I bought my Toro PT21 22164 including bag last year for $799 - which was a good deal at the time.

I now see they have changed the model number to 22194 and a couple places on Ebay (search for PT21 or 22194) are selling a bunch for low prices. One outfit if $499 + $39 for a bag and the other is $599 bag included. Freight is extra --- no idea what that would be.

Just a heads up for anyone that is looking for a deal :)

I ordered one of these. I had a PayPal 10% off coupon that I used to get it for $450. I've been holding off the company shipping it while I decide if I'm going to be purchasing additional equipment from them. I'll report back once I get it in my possession.

If anyone is interested, the guy says he has several more, new and still in the box.

The "slop" may be either a loose blade (tighten the blade retaining bolt) or a loose/sheared woodruff key in the crank adapter that the blade bolts to (replace the 1/4" key). The crank itself wallowing around in its lower bearing support indicates bigger problems and the need to tear it down for inspection/rebuild. If you do have the Suzuki 47PZ2, you have a rare bird indeed. This was the first year of this engine series (1983) and the only year to use mechanical points triggered ignition. The following years 1984-2003, the 47P used solid state ignition, which used a small transistor mounted in the coil casing to fire the ignition ..which was prone to heat/vibration fatigue and often failed - see other threads on here & elsewhere about expensive 47P coil replacement and attempts to save them by heating them in an oven ..all thanks to that dime sized transistor that you don't have to worry about.

What about Snapper, they have 2 different walk behind mower lines now. Their top of the line seems nearly identical to mowers they were making decades ago. Everything seems old time heavy duty. Which leads to a few big positives. Reliable proven design, dependable, and when yo do need a part chances are it will be available. (A problem I had with a 10 yr old Murray, sure those generic parts are available at big retailers, as well as some parts for more recent models, but they like to keep you buying new equipment every few years.) Plus they are mostly sold at dealers who are also service shops. When you need your mower serviced, the big retailer wont be the one you bring it to. Look at many of the mowers they have discounted in their discount area. Usually the ones returned for one reason or another often with the sticker of the local repair shop that serviced the machine. Snappers other line is new and designed and priced to compete with mowers sold at the big retailers. Im not sure about the dependability, but if you are using them with different teen operators and on Camp sized property with hills and such with enough area needed mow that two mowers would be needed to cut it quickly then it may be wise to purchase from an authorized service / dealer like Snapper. And the prices online at Snapper are suggested list only. When I got my new Snapper I had moved from a flat 7000 sq ft lawn to a sloped 20,000 sq ft lawn. Considering I had 3 times the amount of lawn, I definetly wanted self propelled, mulching, and a high quality motor. So I picked the old style Snapper mulching deck with the 6hp Kawasaki engine that is used on many commercial models for $599 , $100 under list without bargaining. If I had gone with the standard B&S engine it probably would have been closer to the price of the Deere yout mentioning since the mulch only B&S Snapper is listed at $499 and your planning to get two so you could probably get a nice deal. Ariens also makes a nice mower I was considering, but the Ariens dealer wasnt as close as my local Snapper dealer. Also considering the other equpiment you have it would be even more of a reason for me to buy from a Dealer / Service shop as opposed to a big retailer.

3/4 acre?.... bagging and cart?... sounds like a job for a "normal" riding lawn mower... Other than you want to test ride for comfort and ergonomics, and the fact that Simplicity is the grand-master of striping....I'd recommend JD 100 series. I have L120 (48"), for my 2.9 acres (2.25 lawn). It takes the 48" deck 1 hour per acre to mow, and believe it or not, it stripes too!.... I also use the tractor to pull a cart full of firewood, soil, mulch etc, pull a plug aerator, push a snow blade, and I use a bagger in the fall for leaves... Sure it won't last 25 years... but if I get 10 out of it, I'll be happy. The equivalent (size wise) 300 series deere would have to last 20 years to be in the same economy scale. I'm on year 3, with 250 hours on the machine right now. It's still perfect in every way. No neeed to spend 2x on a 300 series deere for 3/4 acre - unless you want "premium" on a scale of riding lawn mowers... Although 4ws would be nice - it only reduces your turning radius from 18" to 15". That counts, but it's not a "world" of difference (like a ZTR would be). I have trees and obstacles too. the 18" turning radius of the L120, with the 48" deck, allows me to make a 24" uncut circle - in practical terms (JD spec. is 20"). All my trees have a 36-48" wide island of mulch, so no trimming or multiple passes are necessary.

If you have a slope your better off to stick with a geared transmission. However if you have to have a hydro make SURE that it is a K66 or better. The light duty K46 units aren't durable enough for anything but flat ground. Designations tell you a lot. LT=Lawn Tractor GT=Garden Tractor. Garden tractors are rated to pull ground engaging implements and lawn mowing is child's play for them. When you get into decks over 42" inches in a Big Box LT your looking at an over powered unit on a light frame that IMHO is NOT the best way to go on anything but a flat "not to big" yard. I just sold an old Craftsman GT 6000 that I'm sure will still be running 10 years from now. Unless you get into commercial duty, zero turn units are the repair centers best friend. Children's college educations are being paid for by the fathers repairing these machines. Craftsman mowers have been recommended. I second that. I have not been skunked yet on parts availability from Sears. Ebay is also a great place for Craftsman parts as well as others. If your going to keep the machine for years and want a large deck figure on an up scale model that has the heavier components. It will cost you $3500+ If price is a big consideration buy an inexpensive 38 or 42 geared transmission model built By MTD. $999. These units mow just as good as the $1300/$1400 JD's and Cub Cadets and give less problems. You don't need 20 HP for a 42" deck. My 2 cents. What say you?

They ship freight so it will vary. Mine was $65, which I don't think is a particularly good deal. No tax though for me, so that makes up a lot of the difference.

Quite frankly, given that a personal pace Super Recycler costs $529 + tax (on sale) at my local Toro dealer and the fact that this mower has everything that mower has + a Kawasaki engine + steel, sealed bearing wheels it's hard to see a down side...other than the warranty. Toro Commercial mowers only have a 1 year warranty, regardless of use. The SR has a 5 year warranty.

In my case, I have the identical engine (in great working condition) on my transmission-dead Cub Cadet, so I have that potential problem covered...gonna give it an oil change and put it on the shelf as a spare. I just hope that there are no transmission issues on the Toro. It certainly sounds like the SR transmissions are reliable from research.

I think the warranty jumps to 2 years for consumer. My dealer was careful to register me in the system as a consumer so I'd get the extra year. If you're getting the bag with it, ask if they're sending the extra blade that comes with that kit. At $450 you are basically paying for the sealed wheels and the engine.

It came with the high lift blade. Got it last night. It was brand new in the original box. I haven't used it yet, but it certainly looks like the deal that I hoped.

Actually, I just got finished using it for the third time a few minutes ago...first time mulching rather than catching. Nothing bad to report. I have a rather long stride (34" inseam) and I can cover a a lot of area quickly and the mower keeps up fine. Of course, I'm mowing pretty often and not taking off much. We'll see how it does when I get off schedule. Also, my property has some pretty good slopes. I had read that the personal pace feature was kind of hard to use on slopes, but honestly it hasn't been a problem. I have a trim area where I am going up a slope while turning to trim around the end of a retaining wall. It used to be really rough on my old mower's plastic wheels. The steel wheels are going to hold up much better. No problems with having enough power to pull the slopes either.

For others thinking of picking one of these up, note that the handle is not the same one as on the Super Recyclers. This one is made of larger diameter tubing and requires tools to adjust. It even has a "kicker" to help keep the handle more rigid. For me, the increase in durability and stability is a plus, but if you have storage issues and like folding the handle, it might be a negative. Otherwise, think "SR4 with an upgraded engine and steel wheels for the same price (cheaper actually)." It was a no-brainer for me and I am very satisfied. My neighbor bought a big-box Honda right before I ordered the PT21...he's kinda kicking himself now...although it's pretty nice as well.

I purchased two of the PT21 mowers and feel this is one of the better deals I've found in years. It has everything I was looking for in a replacement for my 18 year old Deere 14SB. The Deere has a better design for bagging, but the Toro mulches much better. Still love the Deere, but the blade break is shot and I couldn't see putting $150+ into a replacement. While the transmission is currently working, I've torn into it for the last time having replaced internal parts on 3 occasions. The Deere absolutely sold me on the Kawasaki engine.

The PT21 ran me $300 less than I paid for my Deere in 1991. And with the Kawa engine, I figure I'm good for another 15+ years. Thanks a bunch to the original poster for bringing this deal to my attention.

The guy on ebay is legit. He and his family own Hector Turf. I would not hesitate to buy from him again.
