Avocado tree water sprouts?

I have a young avocado tree that is now 7 feet tall or thereabouts. In the last 6 months or so, a new "water sprout" (I'm not sure what to call it) came out of nowhere and is growing taller than the rest of the tree.

The growth came out of the main trunk, horizontally, about 5 feet off the ground, then made a quick 90° degree turn upward. It is now 1" in diameter, two feet long, and the wood is completely green.

I've been hesitant to prune it back because it doesn't look like a typical water sprout.

What should I do, leave it alone, or cut it back?
