Lots of luck as I see Avocado trees on the coast that are over 20 feet tall that have never produced on piece of fruit. In order to have an avocado tree that produces fruit, one must graft the seedling. Since the process of grafting involves mixing the tissues of the seedling with those of a producing tree, it is often just easier to simply buy a grafted tree from a reputable nursery. Can I graft my own tree? Avocado grafting requires precise weather conditions and therefore a successful graft yield is often low - even for professionals. Why should I plant a non-producing avocado tree? Avocado trees provide a spacious and uncluttered canopy within the foliage. Also, avocado branch growth patterns lend very well to tree climbing. You didn't say what the root was growing in. Is it in water or dirt? My avocado are planted outside - but even then, they are very picky trees to get to production, especially in cooler climates. If you started the seed in water - toothpick method, it probably would be wise to consider it a short-term interest. I find avocado to be the most difficult trees to grow here. Although - if you noted a root, perhaps planting it in compost mixed with a bit of peat moss and perlite in a pot - may contribute some help to the root growth. I would allow the top of the seed to protrude above the soil. Then water with dilute fertilizer once established. I have heard tales of avocado seeds started that way going on to be fairly decent producers, but as a rule, avocado trees are grafted --- and babied. They prefer much warmer climates as well, dislike too much water, like heavy mulch, and heavy feedings during months of greatest growth. Just my 2 c's. Bejay

Hello Aaron, I'm very new to avocados- have just had one for about six months. I primarily grow plumeria and citrus, but have just one dwarf Fuerte avocado. Have a 16' x 16' indoor greenhouse which has 8 T5HO 4 foot lights. I also have some additional LED lights for the avocado and citrus trees. I live in a wet, cold and very grey year round climate, so everything stays indoors in the greenhouse. My avocado is 4 feet tall and in a 5 gallon container. It's in a 5:1:1 soil (5 parts Repti-bark, 1 part perlite and 1 part Miracle grow potting soil). I water approximately every 5 days about 8 cups water. Fertilizer is a half dose of Osmocote, and then 1/2 dose of Foliage Pro and Pro-Tekt every other week. I bought the tree from Four Winds. It looked terrific when I bought it but within a month leaves dropped and turned brown. Now it looks beautiful again- lots of green healthy leaves popping. I'm out of town at the moment but will post a pic when I get home. Best wishes. Nancy

im not even sure you are using the term water sprout properly .... your tree is simply sprouting dormant buds along branches ... its usually normal ... i used to rub all these type of sprouts off when my trees were younger ... as a form of pruning for future form ... of course.. at some point.. the trees got too large.. so that ended that ... and be clear.. production trees.. are pruned constantly to maximize output .... they really arent grown as pretty backyard trees ... so get a tree saw.. and hand pruners.. and learn how to prune.. no healthy plants dies from pruning ... think topiary .. as you wonder about what can be done to trees when pruning ... also.. most sprouts grow upwards.. because that is where the sun is.. but just because they do.. doesnt make them water sprouts ... dont fixate on the term is what i mean ... one of the greatest problems with the WWW is too much info ... and it gets peeps worried about stuff that isnt even a problem .... and if orchard peeps want to come along and argue about it.. ill defer ... if they can actually explain why this is bad in your backyard tree ... all my knowledge is trees.. never grew a citrus in my MI life .. so if there is something special specific about such.. then i will most certainly defer ... but im not buying you actually have a problem here ... other than some usual maintenance pruning ... ken
